in order to find out what makes them tick
I think it means finding out how their minds work, their driving force.
I think my proposal also covers the source register pretty well.

make someone or something tick
Fig. to cause someone or something to run or function. (Usually with what. Tick refers to a watch or clock.) I don't know what makes it tick. What makes John tick? I just don't understand him. I took apart the radio to find out what made it tick.

Lauren Jasie
: This is a good translation, in my opinion. It is colloquial, but so is the original Spanish-language version.

..and know which media they socialise in/ which social media sites they use
This is just a guess as we don't have much context to go on. I think they're referring to social media sites, where this target audience 'hangs out'.

Or "...know in which social media sites they are active/participate in" - something along those lines.

"move about in" could also work for "por los que se mueve".

disagree |
Andrew Bramhall
: I'll use the expedient means of the red button to disagree; it doesn't say anything about social media sites.

Recognise target markets by the number of hits they get
"Capable of analysing the target markets we are aiming at, and recognising (the importance of ) these target markets by the number of hits they get. "

: This is just a wild guess - it doesn't say anything about "number of hits".

How else would they gauge how much activity there is on the sites their target market moves about on?

disagree |
Lisa McCarthy
: I don't get it either - how can they count the number of hits by their target audience on other sites? And isn't it redundant to say 'we are aiming at'? 'Target market' already covers that.
