Τhese are clearly stages in criminal procedure in Greece (and perhaps other European states?). But I do not believe that there are stages in the English criminal process which closely correspond to the terms. The preceding stage is προκαταρτική εξέταση. How am I to translate them? Grateful for any help.

The prosecution can be initiated by a "summary" investigation, to be conducted either by a magistrate or by a police officer (misdemeanour); by an "ordinary" investigation that is conducted by an ordinary judge (felony case); or by transmitting the case directly to court.

2. The Pretrial Stage
The pretrial stage aims at finding and securing the necessary evidence, so that it may be decided whether a person must be brought to trial for a certain crime (art. 239 C. Crim. Proc.). The principles governing it are the secrecy and the written procedure. No public hearings take place, but all investigating acts occur in the office of the competent official, written documents are submitted and records are kept. The public prosecutor of the first instance court is competent to press charges after receiving information about a criminal offense. The usual sources of such information are a complaint of the victim, a denunciation by a citizen, a report from another authority, etc. If the information included in the above documents is based on the law and not manifestly unfounded as to the facts, the public prosecutor is bound to press charges. The principle governing his activity is the mandatory prosecution (or principle of legality).
The initiation of criminal proceedings is effected by ordering one of the following procedures: (i) a summary investigation by a magistrate or a police officer under the supervision of the prosecutor, (ii) an 'ordinary' investigation carried out by a regular judge, or (iii) referring the case directly to trial. The last mentioned procedure is followed when the offenses are not severe and the facts clear. The ordinary investigation is mandatory when the offense is a felony, when the offender must be arrested and detained, or when the summary investigation needs completion. In all other cases•, the summary investigation procedure is followed.

Legal remedies brought before the criminal courts
16. In principle, the public prosecutor has the duty to prosecute every offence that has been reported to him/her. The public prosecutor is considered as an objective authority. He also has the duty to uphold legality, to protect the citizens and to safeguard the rules of public order. He/she may order an *ordinary investigation*, carried out by the investigating judge, or a *summary investigation* (in the case of misdemeanours), carried out by general or specialized investigating officers; he/she may summon the accused directly before the trial court; he/she may proceed to a *preliminary inquiry*. Proceedings in this case are to be held in writing and in secrecy. When the ordinary investigation is completed, the case must be referred to the judicial council with a motion either to refer the case to trial or to acquit. The judicial council is a panel of judges deciding in camera. Their decisions must be reasoned. This procedure is similar to the one before ordinary courts.
