German term

St. p. lap.

German to English Medical Medical (general) post-appendectomy abscess
Hi there again, dear collagues!
I really could use some help with these abbreviations.

The complete paragraph is:
"Epikrise: Die stat. Aufnahme erfolgt wegen Fieber und einem intraperitonealen Abszess zur op. Versorgung bei St. p. lap. Appendektomie am 25.XX.YY"

I've worked out "stat." (stationäre) and "op." (operatives), but can't get past that ungodly trifecta.
Would that be "status-post Laparotomy"?

Thank you in advance!

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

PRO (2): Andrea Flaßbeck (X), Audrey Foster (X)

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

Gabriel Csaba (asker) Aug 4, 2009:
@Marga & MMUlr Thank you both! My "operatives" was actually meant to be read in German... minus the "S". Exhaustion is never a good copilot.
Marga Shaw Aug 2, 2009:
@MMUIr Thank you! Yes, I agree with you, that my second suggestion (i.e. "... requiring surgical excision") may depart too much from the source text.
MMUlr Aug 2, 2009:
@Marga I agree to your suggestions, esp. the version "...requiring surgery", better maybe: "... for surgical management/treatment of an intraperitoneal abscess". I would not use "surgical excision" - since we do not know *what* exactly they did, so excision is IMO too much interpretation rather than translation. (Usual technique is surgical drainage of the abscess + antimicrobials i.v.)
Marga Shaw Aug 2, 2009:
@Gabriel "op. Versorgung" means "operative Versorgung". Hence, you might consider to translate "und einem intraperitonealen Abszess zur op, Versorgung" for example as "and an intraperitoneal abscess requiring surgery" or perhaps also "and an intraperitioneal abscess requiring surgical excision" instead of "operatives".

Status post laparascopic

... status post laparascopic appendectomy on....
Example sentence:

Patients with cardiac diseases and COPD would not be good candidates for laparoscopic appendectomy. In addition, laparoscopic appendectomy is not recommended for those with pre-existing disease conditions.

Laparoscopic appendectomy may also be more difficult in patients who have had previous lower abdominal surgery and for obese patients.
