I received the email below from a fellow translator, who also sent me his web page for reference, are translators out there that desperate to get jobs that they are offering free translations and accepting those offers ?!

of the USA and Canada, and the healthcare departments of over 30
countries.
I have a network of professional interpreters and translators who
will
handle every document offered us on the highest level.
The pages I sent you (see below) show photos of myself at work as
well as
letters of appreciation sent to me. With that, I hope the
legitimacy of my
services will be verified and an initial level of trust will be
established.
I personally only interpret and translate in English =>Russian
and
Russian=>English. For other language combinations, I rely upon my
team
of translators who work alongside me on the same level of
intergovernmental
sessions. They are professional capable of working with pretty
much any
document in all European languages and they work in language
pairs
including many less common ones (Chinese, Japanese, Korean,
Arabic). I can
vouch that they all are highly educated native speakers.
This letter is being emailed in an effort to introduce myself.
Also, I
want to try to find means to establish a productive
aquaintanceship so you
and me can get more jobs. If you are fully satisfied with the
volumes of
work you get from Proz.com, - then we might not have much to talk
about. In
the case you do not, please continue reading.
My team of translators and the traffic that my website gets
allows me to
handle large volumes of work. Please consider my letter as a
proposal to
help you with your workload.
By now you surely have a qustion of what I need. Let me answer. I
do not
have a translation project right this time. I need to speak with
you (I
speak only in Russian and English) so I can tell you what my
prospectives
are. In brief, I need a page, or more, in French. Since I do not
speak
French, I certanly cannot do anything with the language. Once I
get a
translation project involving the French language, whom I will go
to? I
will have to run to you.
On the other hand, lets speak of you. You may be a retired
person, person
having a full day job, or a freelance translator who is just
waiting to get
an additional means to earn money using your bilinguality. By
adding one or
two, or more, pages in French to my website your chances of
getting a so
much expected translation job is higher. It will be enough to
just review
my pages in English and see what places I work in and what people
I deliver
my cervices to.
Nothing will change in your daily routine. You still will be
having your
daily job, or be a retired person. Your chance of getting a
translation job
will get higher since my website is well promoted. It will take
about a
couple of hours for you to write a page in your own language. No
translation of my pages in English is needed. We will speak using
skype and
I will tell you the key points to cover in the webpage. And this
is it.
I cannot guarantee any particular volume of work, no! What I can
guarantee
is that I will put my efforts to stretch a helping hand to
everyone who
wants to work and who will make a step forward. Many translators
do not
have websites, do not want to have a headache of promoting in the
internet
and do not want to be actively seeking clients. They want to sit
on one
spot and wait until someone finds them. I am not that! I like
business
activity, I like promoting my website and I love getting new
translators in
my team.
Please do not jump to conclusions but rather read my pages in
English,
Russian, Italian, German or Russian and see for yourself. I am
legit. I am
just a straightforward entrepreneur guy.
Please use skype. To explain the text of a potentual page in
French by
email is not feasible. My experience shows that this would be a
total time
waste for it will produce more questions.

The sender has a Proz profile (unverified) and a Blueboard profile which has this entry (I believe this doesn't go against the rules as no names are quoted):
"Very nervous and harrassing client. Takes a huge amount of time arguing about the work process of a tiny project. Pays peanuts. Refuses to pay proofreading of other translator's work. Never again!"
I believe that there should be some ProZ rule against such aweful spamming especially from non-paying members !

It smacks of a scam, anything so long and so convoluted for so little information is either a student working on a paper with a minimum word count and precious little content, a television preacher after your wallet or a Nigerian con-man after your entire bank account

person, person having a full day job, or a freelance translator".... yes, that about sums up just about every adult with a bank account in existence... you're either retired, have a job or work freelance"
But yeah, it seems this guy wrote a 2 page e-mail to hustle a 2-page translation, lol, talk about a waste of resources! He must not be very busy (notwithstanding what he says).
Just laugh at it and post it around as you already have here for our amusement and the amusement of others ▲ Collapse

What's really funny is that he sees himself as a business man as opposed to the other "lazy" wannabes out there !

I'm pretty sure that this is not a scam as I think I recognize one of my clients in this email. If you want to know for sure if this is a genuine job offer, please contact me via ProZ and I can let you know who my client is so you can check if this is the person who contacted you.

I didn't read it all. Just put on my proofreader's hat and, in a glance, spotted these two things:

It will be enough to just review my pages in English and see what places I work in and what people I deliver my cervices to.
Conclusion: the doc's a gyno, specializes in hysterectomy, and sells the "waste" from his surgeries to some very kinky cannibals.
(And yet one thing I don't translate is medical stuff.)
Now thinking seriously, why should I, EN-PT translator, IT-FR-ES speaker, PL babbler, and nothing else, want my web site translated for free into, say, RU? I'd have no way of communicating with a RU-speaker who wanted my services! It's enough to have a surname that motivates some people to write me directly in DE, forcing me to use MT to find out whether they are selling EDM or proposing serious business.
