Testo originale - Inglese Although high unemployment rates are recorded in virtually all transition economies, Poland stands out as something of a special case. The factors responsible for Poland’s unfavourable labour market trends include the following:
Demographic conditions. Polish labour markets are absorbing large numbers of new workers created by the population boom of 1979-1985. New labour force entrants will average some 650,000 annually through 2010; many of these young workers are not finding jobs or face poor prospects for career advancement.
Weaknesses in education. Polish schools often do not provide education of the desired quality, particularly in terms of skill development. Polish students consistently score at the bottom of the OECD’s Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) tests; the numbers of vocational training schools are inadequate; and lifelong learning systems have not yet been developed in Poland, reducing the flexibility and adaptability of the labour. Meanwhile, Poland’s education system is unable to address problems of growing shortages of skilled workers, particularly in the booming electrical engineering and construction industries, as well as in medicine (nurses and doctors). In sum, the Polish educational system too often serves as a factory for creating unemployed workers, rather than preparing for jobs of the future.
Inappropriate social protection policies. During the early 1990s some 2 million working-aged individuals took advantage of early retirement and rather lenient disability schemes to leave the labour market. While not increasing unemployment directly, these measures introduced large disproportions between the working and the occupationally passive populations. High payroll taxes, reduced numbers of jobs in the formal sector, and large fiscal burdens resulted. Expenditures on disability pensions, retirement and other benefits consume almost 44% of Poland’s national budget!
Structural changes in the labour market. Growth in the demand for labour has been slowed by enterprise restructuring and heightened competition (which has accelerated the introduction of labour-saving technologies), and by the relatively rapid development of modern, capital-intensive sectors like finance and electrical engineering. In these circumstances, annual GDP growth needs to exceed 5% in order to significantly reduce unemployment in Poland—a figure that was last reached during 1995-1997.
Poland’s still small service sector. At present, Poland’s service sector accounts for only about 50% of Polish employment; in Germany, the figure is more than 66% and in the UK it is 76%. Much of the difference can be explained by the absence of changes in Polish agriculture: the majority of Poland’s 1.4 million farms do not produce for the market, and contain large amounts of hidden unemployment and low-productivity labour (which is also a major cause of rural poverty in Poland).
Poland’s relatively unfavourable business and investment climates. In surveys conducted by the Union of Industrial and Employers’ Confederations of Europe, significant bureaucratic barriers to entrepreneurial activities were noted by 88% of surveyed foreign investors in Poland. Corruption was a concern for 60% of respondents, as were poor infrastructure (73%) and unstable legal and fiscal regulations. According to Economist Intelligence Unit data, Poland’s $2471 in per-capita foreign direct investment recorded in 2005 was one of the lowest in the EU—and less than half the levels recorded in the Czech Republic and Hungary.
Ineffective decentralisation of labour market regulation. Reforms introduced in the late 1990s transferred much of the responsibilities for conducting active labour market policies to local governments. Many localities still do not have the institutional capacity needed discharge these responsibilities. Matters are further complicated by the fact that the decentralisation was introduced in conditions of rapid growth in unemployment and of inadequate public funding for active labour market measures.
High taxes on labour. Taxes and other levies needed to finance Poland’s social welfare system account for a stunning 80% of gross wages in Poland, leaving only 20% as net take-home pay. This large “tax wedge” mean that increases in net wages have a multiplicative effect on enterprise labour costs. This weakens employers’ incentives to create new jobs, or to raise wages for those currently employed.
The absence of effective dialogue. Despite the severity of these problems, Poland’s labour relations institutions seem unable to find a common language. Trade unions focus on protecting existing (relatively rigid) labour regulations and pay levels for those workers who are employed. Employers who seek to reduce labour costs and boost competitiveness are often unable to do so within the framework of Poland’s relatively inflexible labour law and collective bargaining system, and too often therefore go outside the law. Whereas state agencies in the past were Poland’s main employer, the state is now increasingly focusing on macroeconomic and regulatory problems. In such circumstances, opportunities for dialogue too often turn into confrontation, with obvious implications for prospects for addressing Poland’s labour market challenges.
Possible solutions
UNDP’s 2004 national human development report Working out Employment calls for the development and implementation of a comprehensive national employment programme that would be consistent with the European Employment Strategy. Key elements would include:
1. According measures to increase the demand for labour absolute priority in Poland’s development strategy, with a special focus on supporting entrepreneurship and reducing the tax burden on labour.
2. Introducing more supply-side flexibility into the labour market, by inter alia improving Poland’s education system (especially vocational education institutions) in order to realise the principles of life long learning.
3. Modernising Poland’s active labour market policy framework, in order to strengthen work incentives while still providing appropriate social protection.
4. Supporting a broad, more effective social dialogue both within and outside the framework of Poland’s tripartite labour relations systems.

На долю налогов и различных пошлин, необходимых для финансирования системы социального обеспечения в Польше приходится невероятная цифра в 80 % от доходов до налогообложения, оставляя лишь 20 % для чистой заработной платы. Наличие столь существенного «налогового клина» означает, что повышение зарплат вызывает мультипликативное повышение затрат предприятий на рабочую силу. Это снижает стимул для работодателей создавать новые рабочие места и повышать зарплаты работникам.
Отсутствие эффективного диалога. Создается впечатление, что органы, ответственные за трудовые отношения в Польше, не в состоянии найти общий язык, несмотря на серьезность существующих проблем. 3. Модернизация польской политики трудоустройства населения, с целью повышения стимула к труду при обеспечении адекватной социальной защиты.
4. Поддержка широкого, более эффективного социального диалога, как в рамках, так и вне рамок польской системы трехсторонних отношений.

Ее епископат 70 последних лет решительно отказывался от какого-либо общения с Русской православной церковью, считая, что та замарала себя сотрудничеством
с богоборческой властью. Сегодня один из участников встречи - епископ Манхэттенский Гавриил ответил на вопросы корреспондента "МК".
- Как проходила встреча с российским президентом?
- Мы встретились в Нью-Йорке в российском консульстве. С российской стороны кроме президента были архимандрит Тихон (Шевкунов), наместник Сретенского монастыря в Москве, и посол России в США Юрий Ушаков. С нашей стороны - первосвятитель митрополит Лавр, архиепископ Берлинский и Германский Марк, епископ Сан-Францисский и Западно-Американский Кирилл и я. Президент поздоровался со всеми, официально поприветствовал митрополита Лавра и вручил ему послание Святейшего Патриарха Московского и Всея Руси Алексия II. Владыка приветствовал президента от имени нашей церкви. И в этот момент мы встали, вручили в подарок икону Елизаветы Федоровны...
- Великой княгини, которую расстреляли большевики в 1918 году?
- Оказалось, что президент знает о ее жизни, об убийстве ее мужа и почитает ее. В иконе частица мощей княгини Елизаветы, которые находятся в Святой земле, в нашем монастыре на Елеонской горе. Президент Путин подарил митрополиту икону Святой Троицы, поскольку тот проживает в Троицком монастыре, в Джорданвиле, и книгу о Кремле. Президент говорил об изменениях в России, заверял нас, что Россия никогда не вернется к тоталитарному режиму.
- Коснулся ли разговор спорного церковного имущества? Ведь после революции часть храмов и монастырей перешла к вашей церкви...
- Мы обсуждали этот вопрос. Сегодня в США проживают около 4 миллионов русских - это четвертая и самая значительная после революции волна эмиграции из России. Только в Нью-Йорке проживают почти миллион русских. Наша церковь насчитывает 250 приходов по всему миру. К сожалению, старая эмиграция вымирает, их дети ассимилировались за счет смешанных браков. Мы думали, что некоторые приходы обречены на вымирание. Но новая волна с начала 90-х годов серьезно восполнила нашу церковь.
- Наверняка шли предварительные переговоры о встрече с президентом?
- Я встречался с Путиным в сентябре 2001 года. Это было после теракта в Нью-Йорке. Был официальный прием в посольстве, и я находился среди приглашенных. Естественно, их должна решать прежде всего сама церковь. Митрополит Лавр заверил Путина, что мы будем обсуждать проблему воссоединения на Архиерейском соборе в декабре этого года.
Во время ужина мы говорили о необходимости духовного образования русского народа. Мы считаем - необходимо ввести в школе Закон Божий. Президент к этому отнесся положительно, но сказал, что этому мешает многонациональный состав страны. Я предложил Владимиру Владимировичу, чтобы государство вместе с церковью подумало, как отметить один день в году, когда Россия вспоминала многомиллионные жертвы коммунизма и кровавого режима. Пусть это будет не выходной день, который чаще всего кончается пьянством, а день траура. На Западе мы больше знали о жертвах коммунизма, чем в Советском Союзе. По самым скромным подсчетам, было уничтожено 60 миллионов русских. Президент сказал, что обсудит это с патриархом.
- В официальных отчетах об этой встрече говорилось, что на ней присутствовал епископ Меркурий, возглавляющий патриаршие приходы Московского патриархата в США. Так ли это?

The President said this at a meeting with the representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad on September 24.
During his visit to the USA, Vladimir Putin met with the bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad. For the last seventy years, her episcopate decidedly refused any communication with the Russian Orthodox Church considering her stained by cooperation with the atheist authorities. Bishop Gabriel of Manhattan, one of the participants of that meeting answered some questions of the MK’s (Moskovsky Komsomolets) correspondent.
- How did this meeting with the Russian President go?
- We met at the Russian Consulate in New York. Besides the President the Russian side was represented by the Archimandrite Tikhon (Shevkunov), the nastoiatel (prior) of the Sretensky Monastery in Moscow (Monastery of the Meeting of Our Lord), and Iurii Ushakov, the Russian Ambassador in the US. From our side – the First Hierarch Metropolitan Laurus, Archbishop Mark of Berlin and Germany, Bishop Kirill of San-Francisco and Western United States and I. The President greeted all of us, officially saluted Metropolitan Laurus and presented him a greeting from the Most Holy Patriarch Aleksii II of Moscow and All the Rus. Vladyka greeted the President on behalf of our church. At that moment we all rose from our seats and presented the President the icon of Elizaveta Fedorovna…
- The Grand Duchess shot by the Bolsheviks in 1918?
- It turned out that the President knew about her life, the murder of her husband and venerated her memory. The icon contains a small part of the relics of the Grand Duchess that are stored at our monastery on the Mount of Olives in the Holy Land. The President gave Metropolitan an icon of the Holy Trinity (because his residence is the Holy Trinity Monastery in Jordanville), and a book about the Kremlin. The President spoke about the changes in Russia assuring us that Russia would never return to the totalitarian regime.
- Did you touch upon the question of disputed church property? After the Revolution some of the churches and monasteries passed to your church…
- We discussed this issue. Today there are about four million Russians living in the USA. It is the fourth and the most considerable immigrant wave from Russia after the Revolution. In New York alone, there are almost one million Russians. Our church has 250 parishes worldwide. Unfortunately, the old émigré community is dying out and their children have assimilated because of mixed marriages. We thought that some parishes were doomed to extinction. However, the new wave starting in the 90’s substantially filled up our church.
- There must have been preliminary negotiations about the meeting with the President?
- I met with Putin in September 2001. It was shortly after the terrorist attack in New York. There was an official reception at the Embassy and I was among the invitees. Our conversation with the President then lasted only for one minute. In September, the prior of the Sretensky Monastery Father Tikhon came for the Synodal meeting. He conveyed to the episcopate the address from President Putin and expressed his wish to meet with us. Our meeting was planned to last 40 minutes but it actually took over two hours even though he had two important meetings just before us – with Chirac and Schroeder.
- Christians of Russia are mostly concerned about the reunion of the two churches...
- The President shared with us his wish to see the Russian church united, though he recognized that there are certain problems that separate us. Naturally they should be solved by the church herself. Metropolitan Luaus assured Putin that we would be discussing the problem of reunion at the Council of the Bishops in December of this year.
At dinner, we spoke about the necessity of spiritual education of the Russian people. We think it necessary to teach the Law of God in school. The president positively responded to it, however, he said that the multiethnic composition of the country presents an obstacle for that.
I suggested to Vladimir Vladimirovich that the government along with the church should think how to celebrate one day in a year, when Russia could commemorate the many millions of victims of Communism and the bloody regime. It should not be a holiday that often ends with drunkenness, but a day of mourning instead. In the West, we knew more about the victims of Communism then people inside the Soviet Union. According to the most modest calculations over 60 million Russians were killed. The President said that he would discuss it with the Patriarch.
- In the official reports, it was said that bishop Merkury, who oversees the parishes of the Moscow Patriarchate in the USA, was present at the meeting. Is this information true?
- No, it is a lie. There were no other representatives from Moscow besides Archimandrite Tikhon.
- What prevents the reunion of the two branches of the Russian church?
- Before everything else – it is the 1927 declaration of Metropolitan Sergius and the cooperation of the church hierarchs with the atheists. We believe that there must be a recognition that the path chosen was wrong. None of the hierarchs of the Moscow Patriarchate has repented this historical sin. The second problem is the Ecumenism to which the Moscow Patriarchate remains loyal to this day.
- What else did President Putin and Metropolitan Laurus talk about?
- The President described in detail his trip to Valaam in 2001. Metropolitan Laurus said that he visited Valaam incognito in August of the same year. The monastery is being restored and we are ready to assist the rebirth of Orthodoxy in Russia by any means.

William Cohen, former Secretary of Defense of the United States, serves as Chairman of The Leaders Project.
In 2001, Secretary Cohen ended a twenty-six year career in government service and entered the private sector as Chairman & CEO of The Cohen Group, an international strategic consulting company. In addition to his work at The Cohen Group, Secretary Cohen remains an active public voice on issues of foreign affairs, business and defense.
Secretary Cohen’s rise to national prominence began in 1974 when, as a freshman in the United States House of Representatives, he was tasked by the House Judiciary Committee to build the evidentiary base for impeachment of President Nixon. Secretary Cohen, a Republican, cast the deciding vote to impeach – charting the independent course to which he has held throughout his career.
In 1978, Secretary Cohen was propelled into the Senate, defeating a highly respected incumbent. During his first weeks in the Senate, he was singled out to be chairman of the Armed Services Committee’s Seapower and Force Projection Subcommittee, and the Governmental Affairs Committee’s Government Oversight Subcommittee. The former was responsible for tens of billions of acquisition dollars for naval vessels and long-range transport aircraft, as well as U.S. security policy in East Asia, the Middle East and the Persian Gulf. The latter was responsible for reforming the procurement process for the entire U.S. Federal Government.
As Chairman of the Senate Committee on Aging, Secretary Cohen led efforts to improve the efficiency of Medicare and other health care programs and was a central player in the health care reform debates of the 1990s. Secretary Cohen was also a member of the Select Committee on Intelligence for a decade, serving half that time as Vice Chairman.
From 1989 to 1997, Secretary Cohen served on the Board of Directors of the Council on Foreign Relations and chaired the Council’s Middle East Study Group. He has chaired and served on numerous other study groups and committees at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, the School for Advanced International Studies, and the Brookings Institute.
In 1996, frustrated with the partisan gridlock in Washington, Secretary Cohen announced he would give up his secure Senate seat and return to private life to promote international business and, through his writings and the media, a more thoughtful public discourse on national political issues.
President Clinton interrupted these plans, however, when he asked Secretary Cohen to lead the Department of Defense, the first time in modern U.S. history when a President has chosen an elected official from the other party to be a member of his cabinet.
Reversing a steady decline in defense budgets that began in the 1980s, Secretary Cohen succeeded in modernizing the military and maintaining its readiness to fights, reversing recruitment and retention problems by enhancing pay and other benefits, and strengthening security relationships with countries around the world in order to reorient them from the Cold War to the challenges of a new era. Under his leadership, the U.S. military conducted the largest air warfare campaign since World War II and conducted other military operations on every continent.
Secretary Cohen is a published author of nine works of nonfiction, fiction, and poetry.

Г-н Коэн, будучи республиканцем, проголосовал за импичмент президенту, тем самым наметив независимый курс в своих действиях, которому он придерживался на протяжении всей своей карьеры.
В 1978 г. г-н Коэн победил на выборах в Сенат США против очень известного кандидата уже занимавшего эту должность. За первую неделю в Сенате он был избран председателем Подкомитета по военно-морским и сухопутным войскам при Сенатском комитете по вооруженным силам и председателем Подкомитета по правительственному надзору при Комитете по делам правительства США. Первый из них отвечал за выделение десятков миллиардов долларов на закупки для военно-морских судов и грузовых самолетов дальнего действия, а также за политику безопасности США в Восточной Азии, на Ближнем Востоке и в регионе Персидского залива. Второй — за реформирование снабжения всего Федерального правительства США.
Будучи председателем Сенатского комитета по делам престарелых, г-н Коэн прилагал все усилия для улучшения системы льготного медицинского страхования для пожилых граждан (Медикэр) и прочих программ связанных с медицинским обслуживанием, а также был одной из ключевых фигур в дебатах связанных с реформой здравоохранения в 1990-х годах. Г-н Коэн на протяжении десяти лет был членом Специального комитета по разведке и в течение половины этого срока занимал пост заместителя председателя этого комитета.
С 1989 по 1997 гг. г-н Коэн был членом совета директоров Совета по международным отношениям и председателем группы по изучению вопросов Ближнего Востока. Он занимал должность председателя многих групп и комитетов при Центре стратегических и международных исследований, Институте перспективных международных исследований и Брукингском институте (Brookings Institute).
В 1996 году, разочарованный внутрипартийной борьбой в Вашингтоне, г-н Коэн объявил о своей отставке с поста в Сенате и уходе в частный сектор, чтобы посвятить себя международной предпринимательской деятельности и иметь возможность делать более вдумчивые публичные заявлениям в прессе и средствах массовой информации по вопросам внутренней политики.
Однако его планы были прерваны, когда президент Клинтон пригласил его занять пост Министра обороны США, что стало первым случаем в истории США, когда президент назначил представителя противоположной партии, занимающего выборную должность, стать членом своего кабинета.
Остановив наметившийся в 1980-ых годах спад в бюджетном финансировании обороны, на посту министра обороны г-ну Коэну удалось модернизировать вооруженные силы и повысить их боеготовность, а также решить многие проблемы, связанные с набором и сохранением воинского состава путем повышения жалования и льгот военнослужащим. Ему удалось улучшить отношения по вопросам безопасности с другими странами, переориентировав их с политики Холодной войны на решение проблем новой эры. Под его руководством вооруженные силы США провели самую крупную воздушную операцию со времен Второй мировой войны и прочие военные действия на всех континентах.
Г-н Коэн является автором девяти публицистических, художественных и поэтических произведений.

(К 190-летию пребывания МДА
в обители преподобного Сергия Радонежского)
Еще в 1742 г. на территории Троице-Сергиевой Лавры в здании Царских чертогов была открыта семинария, которая получила название Лаврской или Троицкой и которая уже с первых лет своего существования была тесно связанна со Славяно-греко-латинской Академией. В обоих учебных заведениях преподавали фактически одни и те же лица, программа семинарии была составлена по образцу Академии, а преподавание в семинарии по своему уровню почти не уступало академическому. Этим уже была подготовлена почва для будущего слияния двух учебных заведений.
Ректоры академии уже в середине XVIII в. высказывали пожелания о переводе Академии в какое-либо более тихое место, лучше приспособленное для ученых занятий. Еще в Духовном регламенте говорилось, что «место Академии не в городе, но в стороне … где нет народного шума, ниже частые оказии, которые обычно мешают учению, и находит на очи, что похищает мысли молодых человек и прилежать учением не попускает» (п. 19). На этот пункт Регламента ссылался ректор архимандрит Митрофан (Слотвенский) после пожара 1737 года, прося перевести Академию в другое место 15. Вполне в духе Регламента Комиссия духовных училищ, рассматривавшая вопрос, определила: «...Академия, как училище, целому округу общее... менее привязана к средоточию епархии. Как место высшего образования... она должна быть удалена от рассеяния, свойственного многолюдным городам. Долженствуя быть духовным обществом ученых людей, она должна быть в таком месте, где бы ученый круг не был, так сказать, поглощаем коловращениями политическими».
Но впервые этот вопрос был всерьез поставлен в 1775 г. Тогда императрица Екатерина II повелела Синоду: «так как Московская Академия стоит в крайне неспособном для училищ месте, то к переведению оной сыскать другое место». Число учащихся росло, здания в Заиконоспасском монастыре давно обветшали, но «сыскать другое место» в Синоде смогли лишь в 1797 г., предложив перевести Академию в Донской монастырь. Однако на возведение учебных корпусов в этой обители требовалась огромная сумма, поэтому проект был отклонен, и тогда в Синоде решили переместить Академию в Лавру. Но против этого решительно высказался митрополит Московский Платон (Левшин), предлагая в свою очередь в качестве нового места для Академии Воскресенский Новоиерусалимский монастырь. Маститый иерарх обосновывал это тем, что в этом случае можно будет поручить одному лицу исполнение должности ректора академии настоятеля монастыря.
Пожар Москвы 1812 года явился естественным рубежом в истории Академии. «Скорбная повесть о страданиях московского духовенства в 1812 году должна быть начата с Заиконоспасского монастыря, куда неприятели ворвались вслед за вступлением в Москву» , - пишет исследователь той эпохи. Монастырь был разорен и ограблен, оставшиеся монахи подвергались избиениям, истязаниям, убийствам. Монастырские здания хотя и не пострадали от пожара, но оказались сильно поврежденными. Тем не менее были приложены все усилия, чтобы в кратчайшее время возобновить занятия, и уже 31 марта 1813 г. архиепископ Московский Августин (Виноградский) торжественно открыл занятия. Однако помещения представляли много неудобств: «очень ветхи, не уместительны и по самому местоположению стеснены» , - писал архиепископ Августин в Комиссию духовных училищ. Все это совпало и с завершением обучения первого курса Санкт-Петербургской Духовной Академии, реорганизованной 1809 году. Митрополит Платон к тому времени скончался, так что оказать серьезное сопротивление плану перевода Академии в Лавру уже никто не мог, и в 1814 г. Комиссия духовных училищ приняла наконец окончательное решение перевести Московскую Академию в Троице-Сергиеву Лавру.
Торжественное открытие в Лавре Академии, переименованной из Славяно-греко-латинской в Духовную, состоялось на праздник Покрова Богородицы – 1 октября 1814 г. Около трети состава первого курса новой Академии образовали питомцы старой Академии и Троицкой Семинарии, ректором обновленной школы остался архимандрит Симеон (Крылов-Платонов). Из двенадцати бакалавров, назначенных в 1814 г. Комиссией духовных училищ преподавателями, трое – иеромонахи Гермоген (Сперанский), Никанор (Клементьевский) и Феоктист (Орловский) – были из учителей старой Академии, один – иеромонах Владимир (Сорокин) – из учителей Лаврской Семинарии, восемь – из первого выпуска Петербургской Академии.
Важно подчеркнуть, что речь шла, таким образом, не о создании нового учебного заведения, а о реорганизации Академии с целью улучшения и расширения духовного образования. Говоря об Академии в связи с 50-летним юбилеем ее перемещения в Лавру, Н. В. Сушков очень верно заметил: «День 1 октября в сущности можно назвать праздником обновления, так как Московская Славяно-греко-латинская Академия, прожившая 130 лет до перевода своего в Лавру, в ней преобразована и обновлена... Таким образом, ей не 50, а 180 лет».
В сознании современников Академия, находившаяся в Заиконоспасском монастыре и в Троице-Сергиевой Лавре, была одним и тем же учебным заведением. В конце XIX века архимандрит Антоний, приветствуя Московскую Духовную Академию, говорил о двухсотлетней деятельности Академии. Позднее М. Богословский подчеркнул, что «Московскую Академию не предстояло создавать вновь. Она уже существовала с 1685 года... За свое более чем вековое существование старая Славяно-греко-латинская Академия, детище братьев Лихудов, неоднократно изменялась». Е. Е. Голубинский также указывает, что «Московская Духовная Академия есть прежняя Московская Славяно-греко-латинская Академия». По сути дела, по-другому быть и не могло. Ведь Академия образца второй половины XVIII века была детищем митрополита Платона, а у истоков Лаврской Академии стояли его ближайшие ученики и сподвижники: митрополит Евгений (Болховитинов) и архиепископ Августин (Виноградский), а свое лицо и основное направление Академия у Троицы получила также благодаря ученику митрополита Платона – митрополиту Филарету.
Устав 1814 г.
Наконец, еще одной и очень немаловажной побудительной причиной существенного обновления прежней платоновской академии стала разработка Устава Духовных Академий, принятого в 1814 году.
Кропотливый и сложный труд по составлению плана преобразования духовных школ поручен в 1804 г. епископу Евгению (Болховитинову), викарию Петербургской епархии. Он сочувствовал прогрессистским увлечениям эпохи и уже в марте 1805 г. составил проект реформы духовного образования, в основу которого положил неосуществленные проекты времен Екатерины II и новые уставы светской школы. Однако многие иерархи стали в оппозицию преобразованиям. Митрополит Московский Платон писал о предложенном проекте: «учреждение (духовных учебных заведений – а. Е.) доселе было похвально и порядок учения производим был основательно… А ежели новый метод введется, то едва ли ожидать можно лучшего успеха, а затруднения и запутанности больше будет».
Но император под влиянием обер-прокурора князя А. Н. Голицына стал на сторону реформаторов и в ноябре 1807 г. учредил Комитет по усовершенствованию духовных училищ, в котором решающую роль играли князь А. Н. Голицын, статс-секретарь М. М. Сперанский и епископ Феофилакт (Русанов). Через год комитет, переименованный в Комиссию духовных училищ, стал высшим органом по управлению духовными школами.
М. М. Сперанский к февралю 1809 г. составил первую часть академического устава о внутреннем управлении академий. Новый устав был завершен епископом Феофилактом и введен для испытания в новооткрывшейся Санкт-Петербургской Духовной Академии в 1810 г. Труды по внедрению и проверке устава были возложены на молодого ректора столичной Академии архимандрита Филарета (Дроздова). В 1814 г., после первого выпуска Академии он представил свои замечания и исправления устава, направленные против ограничения власти ректора и ориентации на европейских просветителей – «подвижников вольтерьянской философии». Согласно новому Уставу высшим ученым учреждением в Академии выступала академическая конференция, в которую под председательством епархиального архиерея входила академическая преподавательская корпорация, а также почетные члены Академии. Конференция занимается цензурой книг духовного содержания, производством экзаменов и возведением в ученые степени. Духовная Академия должна была стать учебным и научным центром нескольких епархий (округа). Целями ее деятельности определялись: ограждение благочестия и развитие духовного образования. Всего предполагалось создать четыре округа: Петербургский, Московский, Киевский и Казанский. В редакции, представленной архимандритом Филаретом, уставы духовных школ (академий, семинарий и училищ) были утверждены императором Александром I 30 августа 1814 г.
Эпоха митрополита Филарета
Первые пять лет своего существования на новом месте Академия жила под покровительством архиепископа Московского Августина (Виноградского), питомца старой Московской Академии, бывшего в свое время ректором Троицкой Семинарии, а затем и оконченной им Московской Академии, – ближайшего ученика, друга и помощника митрополита Платона. После кончины архиепископа Августина его преемником стал назначенный в 1821 году на московскую кафедру архиепископ Филарет (Дроздов). Таким образом, Академия из рук митрополита Платона перешла в руки архиепископа Филарета. В этой преемственности двух великих иерархов Русской Церкви нельзя не видеть особого Промысла Божия. Пребывание каждого из них на московской кафедре составляет целую эпоху: митрополит Платон святительствовал 37 лет – с 1775 по 1812 гг., а митрополит Филарет – 46 лет, с 1821 по 1867 гг.
«В истории Русской Церкви нового времени, – пишет один из исследователей, – на протяжении двух столетий среди ее деятелей есть только два имени, с которыми не может равняться по историческому значению ни одно другое: это Платон и Филарет, митрополиты Московские. Платон и Филарет – учитель и ученик, это как бы два великих солнца, перед которыми все другие деятели русской церковной истории нового времени только лишь звезды... это две преемственно сменяющиеся эпохи в истории Русской Церкви – в истории русской церковной мысли и жизни».
По единодушному мнению историков и исследователей крупнейшей личностью более чем трехсотлетней истории Академии является, несомненно, митрополит Московский Филарет (Дроздов; 1783-1867). Это был один из тех людей, которые предназначены к особой миссии высшего духовного водительства. Митрополит Филарет, как никто иной, сочетал в себе качества церковного администратора и богослова, государственного деятеля и аскета, систематика и поэта, ученого и старца. Митрополит Филарет обладал удивительным даром ясно видеть суть всякого события или факта, с которым он сталкивался, и нет ни одной стороны духовной и церковно-общественной жизни, в которой он не оставил бы яркого творческого следа. Нельзя не усматривать особого Промысла Божия в том, что новый этап жизни Академии около святых мощей одного из величайших русских подвижников в течение целого ряда десятилетий проходил под непосредственным руководством такой великой личности, как митрополит Филарет.
Разумеется, он много сделал и для Санкт-Петербургской, и даже для Киевской Академии. Но Московская Духовная Академия стала в полном смысле слова детищем митрополита Филарета. Московскую Академию иногда называют филаретовской, и это не преувеличение. Митрополит Филарет не только следил с любовью и вниманием за каждым шагом Академии. Он придал ей дух и направление, не утраченные и после кончины великого иерарха в 1867 г. Легче всего это проследить по документам самого святителя.
Как удачно выразился А. М. Бухарев, «Филарет дает собою православно-русской мысли великую задачу и собою же, своим примером направляет русскую мысль к великому разрешению этой задачи». Он бдительно следил за чистотой богословской науки. «В Московской Академии памятно, – говорит тот же А. М. Бухарев, – как покойный разгневался на изложение (Ф. А. Голубинским – а. Е.) гегельянской системы, извращающей самые глубокие христианские догматы».
Творческое наследие митрополита Филарета — это стихия, в которой поражает точная взвешенность каждого слова, каждого элемента мысли. Представляется, что главным для митрополита Филарета было то, что Христос есть Истина и Жизнь. Отсюда – жизненность и всеохватность филаретовского богословия. Жизнь в Истине и Истина в Жизни – вот двуединая основа подлинных богословских построений, по святителю Филарету.
Митрополит Филарет скончался в 1867 г., отслужив в день кончины свою последнюю литургию. Он перешел в другой мир, окруженный восхищенным почитанием как великий страж Православия, исполненный поистине апостольской ревности. Единство духа в союзе мира (Еф. 4, 3) – вот идеал, к которому в немалой степени приблизилась Академия при митрополите Филарете. Филаретовская Академия – духовно-ученое братство, в котором суть православного любомудрия понималась как единство благочестия и науки.
Митрополитом Филаретом руководила мысль о создании устойчивой богословской преемственности, не нарушаемой посторонними веяниями. В 1847 г. он писал обер-прокурору Н. А. Протасову: «...кандидатов в ректора МДА и профессора богословских наук не должно искать далее здешней Академии и здешних семинарий... В сих местах удобнее довершается академическое образование на службе, при большем против других мест обилии учебных пособий и значительности ученого и образованного общества».
Поступление в Академию давало право на получение «классного чина»: студент приравнивался к чиновнику XIV класса. Это очень важная привилегия ставила Академию в один ряд с «благородными пансионами», в которых могли учиться дети русского дворянства и «инородческой» аристократии, а также и духовенства.
Обучение в Академии состояло из двух двухлетних курсов. Новая учебная программа по Уставу 1814 г. вводилась постепенно. При открытии занятий в 1814 г. читались следующие предметы: истолкование Священного Писания, философия, всеобщая словесность, всеобщая гражданская история, математика, языки – еврейский, греческий, немецкий, французский и английский.
В 1816 г. началось чтение догматического богословия, с 1817 г. – нравственного богословия. Читалось также обличительное богословие. Наряду с этими предметами в программу входили: пастырское богословие, церковное красноречие, церковная история, каноническое (церковное) право (с 1840 г.), патристика (с 1841 г.), метафизика (с 1842 г.), история философии (с 1843 г.), библейская история, русская гражданская история, церковная археология (с 1844 г.). В таком виде программа существовала до 1869 г.
В основу новой программы богословских дисциплин было положено составленное митрополитом Филаретом «Обозрение богословских наук в отношении к преподаванию их в высших духовных училищах». Эта работа, являющаяся образцом краткого систематического изложения богословия, была выполнена им по поручению Комиссии духовных училищ в 1814 г. По святителю Филарету, «шествие богословского учения получает следующий порядок: а) чтение Священного Писания, б) Богословие толковательное, в) Богословие созерцательное, г) Богословие деятельное, д) Богословие обличительное, е) Богословие собеседовательное, ж) Богословие правительственное, или право каноническое». В этом труде митрополита Филарета еще чувствуется влияние богословия XVIII в., однако строгая систематичность и последовательность изложения тем, четкость и емкость формулировок являются залогом будущего развития и углубления богословия как науки.
Совершенствуя собственно богословское образование, Академия должна была учитывать и общее направление развития культуры своего времени. Введение математики и большое внимание к древним языкам диктовалось представлениями эпохи об образованности. Преподавание языков по своему уровню не уступало такому привилегированному учреждению, как Лицей, в Уставе которого говорится (§ 61): «Языки латинский и греческий составляют одно из главных начал (образования – а. Е.)... Опытом дознано, сколь недостаточны новейшие языки для совершенного образования ума и вкуса юношей и сколь необходимы для оного древние...» А по свидетельству историка Московской Академии протоиерея Сергия Смирнова, «студентам назначаемы были переводы целых книг из творений отеческих». В этой связи интересно отметить, что в соответствии с новой реформой богословского образования с конца 90-х гг. в Московской Духовной Семинарии и Академии снова стало уделяться значительно больше внимание изучению древних языков, чем это было во второй половине ХХ века.
В то же время изучение греческого языка возрастало в связи с указом Святейшего Синода 1821 г. «Об усилении в народе учения православного чрез епархиальное духовенство и чрез посредство учащих в духовных училищах». По этому поводу митрополит Филарет предложил «дозволить иногда, вместо толкований Священного Писания, произносить беседы свв. отцов, которые для того... избирать и переводить».
О состоянии и постепенном развитии Академии под бдительным оком митрополита Филарета лучше всего говорят его собственные отчеты и письма к обер-прокурору Святейшего Синода. Так, в 1820 г. святитель писал: «В протекшие шесть лет... в старших из начальствующих и наставников усматривается и зрелость понятий, и сила действования на дух воспитанников. Младшие большею частию оправдывают надежду, восприятую при их избрании. Круг воспитанников представляется постепенно более сосредоточивающимся в стремлении к общей цели, к истинному образованию духа по законам деятельного христианства».
Большое значение в деле духовного воспитания студентов митрополит Филарет придавал богослужению. В частности, о церковном пении он отзывался следующим образом: «Как бы кто ни думал, для меня пение студентов в церкви было немаловажною частию их испытания, в котором чрез настроение звуков испытывалось настроение духа и умилением изрекалось одобрение чувства, не менее существенное, как и одобрение мысли».
В 1822 г., отзываясь с похвалой о ректоре архимандрите Кирилле (Богословском-Платонове), он с удовлетворением констатирует: «...Благоустройство сего заведения возвышается, и в образовании воспитанников нынешнего курса примечается более зрелости, в сравнении с предшествовавшими курсами, чего и надлежало ожидать при правильном ходе нового заведения».
Не всегда, впрочем, обстановка в Академии удовлетворяла митрополита. Так, он считал необходимым полное согласование административной и преподавательской работы ректора с волей правящего епископа. Деятельность ректора архимандрита Поликарпа (Гайтанникова), не всегда согласного с ним и преподававшего, как почти все ректоры, догматическое богословие, вызывала его резкое осуждение за схоластичность преподавания. Святитель хотел видеть на ключевых постах в Академии преданных и верных деятелей.
В 1833 г. семинарист Павел Фивейский (будущий архиепископ Костромской Платон) в частном письме сообщал: «У нас новый инспектор, молоденький, хорошенький баккалаврик Филарет. Мы рады ему все». Понравившийся студентам «баккалаврик» был не кто иной, как выдающийся в будущем ученый и церковный деятель, архиепископ Черниговский Филарет (Гумилевский; 1805—1866). Не только студенты обратили на него внимание. Проницательный митрополит Филарет распознал выдающиеся дарования ученого инока и способствовал его назначению на должность ректора в 1835 г., которую занимал до 1841 г.
В архиепископе Филарете (Гумилевском) сочетались черты педагога, проповедника, ученого, администратора и смиренного подвижника. «Начиная от Херувимской песни до Причащения, слезы текли из глаз его; приняв же Агнца и читая молитву пред Причастием, он всхлипывал. И долго, приобщившись, не мог унять тока слез своих...», – рассказывает его биограф. Именно архиепископ Филарет (Гумилевский) явился инициатором издания при Московской Духовной Академии творений святых отцов. В начале 1835 г. он представил митрополиту Филарету проект этого издания.
В 1840 г. архимандрит Никодим (Казанцев), окончивший Академию в составе седьмого выпуска, по поручению обер-прокурора Н. А. Протасова составил проект издания творений святых отцов. В основе концепции издании этой серии лежало его глубокое убеждение, что «только после того времени, как русские богословы будут читать святых отцов на русском языке, можно ожидать, что они будут самостоятельные и зрелые богословы и не будут зависеть от латинских, немецких, французских и английских богословов и богословии».
По решению духовно-учебного управления труды по переводу святых отцов были возложены в первую очередь на Московскую Духовную Академию. Аналогичная работа велась и в других Академиях, особенно в Санкт-Петербургской, где творения святых отцов публиковались с 1821 г. в журнале «Христианское чтение». Однако наиболее успешной переводческая деятельность оказалась именно в Московской Академии. «Предписывалось при работе над творениями какого-либо отца переводить и издавать непрерывно все важнейшие и нужнейшие, основные его произведения. Начать с главнейших отцов: Афанасия Александрийского, Василия Великого, Григория Богослова, Иоанна Златоуста. Были рекомендованы и сроки: 10 печатных листов перевода в 3-4 месяца». Уже в январе 1842 г. редакционный комитет представил митрополиту Филарету первые переводы слов святителя Григория Богослова.
Одновременно был создан и печатный орган Академии – «Прибавления к творениям святых отцов». Начинание было чрезвычайно важное. Непрерывная связь со святоотеческой традицией есть непременное условие развития православного богословия и православной духовной жизни в целом. Начав систематическую издательскую деятельность с серии святоотеческих творений, Московская Академия встала на путь возрождения подлинно православного богословия. Правда, написание самостоятельных богословских сочинений пока еще удавалось далеко не всегда, влияние католического и протестантского богословия было еще очень сильным, но шла большая коллективная работа, подготавливавшая рождение самостоятельных богословских критериев в будущем. В «Прибавлениях» публиковались статьи разнообразного церковно-исторического и богословского содержания.
Московская Духовная Академия принимала участие и в переводе на русский язык Библии, но здесь ее роль нельзя назвать первостепенной. Основная работа совершалась в Петербурге. В Московской Академии переводили с еврейского «Исход» и «Второзаконие». Из книг Нового Завета Академии было переведено Евангелия от Марка и Послания святого апостола Павла к Римлянам и Галатам, а также сделан пересмотр и проверка всего Четвероевангелия и Деяний Апостольских, переведенных другими Академиями. Академия с честью выполнила эту задачу.
Как преподаватель и затем как ректор архимандрит Филарет (Гумилевский) внес свежую струю в обучение студентов и в ученую деятельность. «Составленные корпорацией ученых в МДА конспекты и программы, – говорит его биограф, – нередко оказывались лучшими, чем в других Академиях. Так, составленным в Московской Академии программам логики и психологии дано предпочтение перед другими «по ясности изложения, полноте содержания и систематической последовательности», и эти программы разосланы для руководства по университетам. Таким образом, Московская Академия в управление ее архимандритом Филаретом (Гумилевским) в научном отношении стояла выше других и была руководительницею в постановке философских наук в высших светских учебных заведениях». Он также обновил преподавание истории, которое до него не имело научного характера, и создал собственный курс истории Русской Церкви, вызывавший живой интерес слушателей.
В донесении Святейшему Синоду о состоянии Академии при архимандрите Филарете в 1838 г. митрополит Филарет отмечал «состояние благоустройства», «мирную стройность», «дух внимания и усердия к своему делу, послушания и кротости, одушевляющий начальствующих и учащих и сообщившийся студентам... Науки, собственно духовные, преподаются вообще сообразно с целью училища, и преподавание введенных в курс Духовной Академии светских наук не представляет ничего противоборствующего направлению наук собственно духовных. На преподавание богословия догматического... обращено было мною особенное внимание. Ректор Академии преподавал оное по собственным урокам... догматы православные изложены в оных верно...»
Неустанные многолетние труды по развитию научного и духовного уровня Академии принесли свои плоды. При следующем ректоре, архимандрите Евсевии (Орлинском), возглавлявшем Академию с 1841 по 1847 гг., сохраняется та же высокая духовно-научная атмосфера. В 1842 г. митрополит Филарет писал в Синод: «Главный предмет академического учения, богословие догматическое, оказался преподанным и принятым в духе Православия, с основательностью и силою». Сделав обзор других предметов, он продолжает: «Вообще состояние Академии, как учебное, так и нравственное, представило наблюдению виды утешительные и удовлетворительные. Дух кроткого благочестия, благоговения... сыновнего послушания власти церковной, взаимного мира и согласия, усердия к пользам службы, одушевляющий начальствующих и наставников, положил соответственные впечатления в студентах, которых поведение и обращение показывают признаки сего доброго преемства».
Из последующих ректоров следует упомянуть об архимандрите Сергии (Ляпидевском; 1820-1898), будущем митрополите Московском, который также был воспитанником Академии и управлял ею в должности ректора с 1857 по 1861 гг. Архимандрит Сергий пользовался поддержкой и уважением митрополита Филарета. При нем в 1857 г. Академию посетил выдающийся духовный писатель XIX в. святитель Игнатий (Брянчанинов).
После архимандрита Сергия на должность ректора МДА был назначен архимандрит Савва (Тихомиров; 1819-1896), впоследствии архиепископ Тверской и Кашинский, возглавлявший Академию с 1861 по 1862 гг. Он известен своими церковно-археологическими исследованиями и многотомной автобиографией «Хроника моей жизни» – ценным источником для истории русской церковной жизни и, в частности, Московской Духовной Академии во второй половине XIX в.
Ректор Академии профессор протоиерей А. В. Горский
Однако наиболее выдающимся ректором в памяти Академии остался замечательный церковный историк, профессор протоиерей Александр Васильевич Горский (1814—1875). Он был взращен Академией и в дальнейшем посвятил ей все свои силы и дарования. Годы ректорства Горского (1862—1875) были одним из самых ярких в научном отношении периодов истории Московской Духовной Академии.
Исключительно ценным свидетельством духовной жизни Горского является дневник, который он вел с юности и который является замечательным свидетельством постепенного возрастания православной души. Его юношеские записи поражают глубиной и возвышенностью мысли: это подлинно богословский дневник. Центром духовной жизни Горского была Святая Евхаристия. «Блаженные минуты Св. вечеряния – о, если бы вы были веками, вечностию душе моей! Для вас можно оставить, забыть все. Я над собою замечаю, и замечаю очень явственно, что мгновение приятия Св. Даров внутрь себя имеет великую силу над душою. Как-то все становится мирнее, теплее, мягче! Душа – любвеобильнее и радостнее! Страх и чувство недостоинства, прежде владевшие ею, сливаются в одни благодарения и славословия. О, Господи! Продли в сердце моем сии святые ощущения...» – так писал Горский в 22 года. Его душе с юности было свойственно чувство одиночества, которое часто является уделом духовно одаренных личностей. Однако тесная духовная дружба соединяла его с Филаретом Гумилевским. В юности Горский стремился к монашеству, но так и не принял его. Но светское положение не мешало вести ему по-настоящему монашескую жизнь. Церковь была для него подлинно живым организмом. По свидетельству профессора Н. И. Субботина, «пример его, несомненно, благотворно действовал на большинство студентов». Только в 49 лет он принял священство, в котором главным для него было принесение Бескровной Жертвы. И в своих лекциях Горский учил о значении Таинства Евхаристии в истории Церкви. Он был целибатным священником, что являлось исключением в его время.
Для о. Александра Горского каждый студент был прежде всего будущий служитель Церкви Христовой. Его отличало ровное, внимательное отношение ко всем учащимся. Главным воспитательным средством для него было духовно-нравственное воздействие. Была велика взаимная любовь академического студенчества и ректора. Для всех студентов он был «папаша». Со своей стороны, отец Александр называл студентов «детками». При Горском в Академии господствовал «благодетельный дух семейной человечности... представителей высшей истинно христианской учености». Академия была «сферой деятельно-христианской семьи». Горский был «душою, главою, объединяющею крепкою нравственною силою», «ученого академического кружка». Отец Александр входил во все стороны академической жизни, находил время посещать и больных студентов, о которых очень заботился. Наставничество часто перерастало в духовное руководство. «Видя и слыша меня с отцом Александром, – вспоминает один из учеников протоиерея А. В. Горского, – можно было принять нас за сообщество мудрого и высокоблагодатного древнего отца Христовой Церкви с дерзновенным, если уже не язычником, то по крайней мере язычески образованным неофитом».
Рука об руку с духовным руководством шло научное руководство. В течение многих лет о. Александр Горский был бессменным библиотекарем Академии. Обладая энциклопедическими познаниями, он рекомендовал студентам книги, которые оказывались им наиболее необходимыми. Его наука «была высоко-смиренна, терпелива, доступна всякому, животворна и любвеобильна... никогда не надмевался он своими многообъемлющими знаниями».
Огромная заслуга о. Александра Горского состоит в том, что он явился, по существу, создателем новой русской церковной истории как науки. Он не был сухим систематизатором. У него была своя богословская концепция истории, в которой он видел проявление действий Трех Лиц Святой Троицы. Главное в истории для Горского – отношение Бога и человека, и задача историка – увидеть духовный смысл каждого события. Научные достижения Горского стоят в тесной связи с его колоссальной ученостью. «Это была какая-то ходячая, живая энциклопедия всевозможных богословских сведений, у которой можно было в какое угодно время добыть не только короткий ответ, но и самую подробную справку по любому вопросу».
Член ряда ученых обществ, протоиерей А. В. Горский переписывался и сотрудничал со многими выдающимися учеными своего времени: О. Бодянским, А. Востоковым и др. Выдающееся научное значение имеет составленное им вместе с К. И. Невоструевым «Описание рукописей Московской синодальной библиотеки» , поныне сохраняющее фундаментальное значение для науки. Эта работа была предпринята по инициативе митрополита Филарета, который особенно ценил скромность Горского и его преданность церковной науке.
Во время ректорства протоиерея А. В. Горского в 1864 г. был широко отмечен 50-летний юбилей реформированной Академии. Обозревая сделанное за этот срок, митрополит Филарет с удовлетворением констатировал значительное влияние Академии на духовенство Москвы и в отчете по Московской епархии за 1863 год писал: «Духовенство столицы, составляемое частию из получивших академическое образование... в значительной степени преимуществует пред прочим духовенством епархии как просвещением, так и нравственным характером... и сопровождается соответственным тому влиянием на прихожан...»
В другом документе, ходатайствуя о поддержке и награждении Академии в связи с ее юбилеем и характеризуя ее достижения, митрополит Филарет говорит о ее высоком достоинстве, а также о преданности профессоров родной Академии. «...Я поступил бы несправедливо, – указывает он, – если бы просил Московской Академии менее, нежели в подобном случае даровано Петербургской. Скажу скромно, если скажу, что достоинство Московской Академии никак не ниже в ученом и нравственном отношении и в православном направлении... Почтенная черта наставничества Академии, между прочим, есть та, что они, при скудном содержании, не переходят в другую выгоднейшую службу, даже по приглашению».
В ряде адресов, полученных Академией, в приветственных выступлениях гостей и речах хозяев выявился итог деятельности и влияния Академии за минувшее пятидесятилетие. Профессор С. Смирнов дал характеристику учебной и научно-богословской работе, состоявшей в первую очередь из переводов Священного Писания и особенно творений отцов Церкви, а также публикаций и книг профессоров по различным вопросам. Главное достояние Академии – твердый дух Православия, который она свято хранит. За полстолетия Академия дала Русской Церкви 26 иерархов, всего окончило Академию за это время 1164 студента.
Ректор Московского университета, воспитанник Академии С. И. Баршев охарактеризовал огромное влияние Академии следующими словами: «Бог видимо благословил ее труд. Повсюду действуют воспитанники Московской Духовной Академии в том самом духе и направлении, которые привиты были им их незабвенными наставниками, и многие из них уже приобрели и почетную известность своими важными заслугами Церкви и науке: одни в сане иерархов, другие в качестве начальников и наставников в учебных заведениях, третьи в звании пастырей». Университет радуется ее успеху, ибо «надобно настойчиво возвещать и распространять истину...»
В приветствии Киевской Духовной Академии подчеркивались давность и постоянство связей двух Академий, как двух родных сестер. «Духовная наука — одна из главных нитей, поддерживающих связь между Киевом и Москвой, которая... продлится до тех пор, пока будет существовать русский народ».
При Горском вошел в действие Устав 1869 г. Устав учредил высшим органом Академий Совет Академии во главе с ректором. Важнейшие дела Академия решает на общих собраниях. Нового преподавателя избирает вся корпорация. По новому Уставу, расширены возможности поступления в Академии: принимаются не только семинаристы, но и гимназисты, а также устанавливается допуск вольнослушателей. Разрешено публиковать лекции, учреждать ученые общества. Академии приобрели право собственной цензуры. Большое значение имело введение обязательной докторской степени для ректора и для профессоров. Это способствовало оживлению научной деятельности.
Новый Устав был выработан после тщательной подготовки. Было изучено преподавание богословия в высших учебных заведениях Европы. Устав 1869 г. в целом отвечал требованиям своего времени и помог протоиерею А. В. Горскому целесообразно направить жизнь Академии. В позднейших воспоминаниях читаем: «...В этом-то и выразилось искусство гения созидателей академического быта в его подробностях: гармоническое сочетание формы и идеи, плоти и духа; закона и благодатной любви».
Вскоре после введения Устава, в декабре 1871 г., в Академии состоялся первый докторский диспут. По отношению к другим Академиям, он был четвертым. Первым соискателем докторской степени в Академии явился архимандрит Михаил (Лузин), впоследствии преемник о. Александра Горского по ректорству, защитивший диссертацию на тему «О Евангелиях и евангельской истории по поводу книги «Жизнь Иисуса» Э. Ренана». Успешная защита первого доктора Академии состоялась, в торжественной обстановке, в присутствии митрополита Московского Иннокентия и других иерархов.
Издатели сборника «У Троицы в Академии» пишут: «Без преувеличения можно сказать, что все лучшее и светлое в Академии идет от Горского, и Академия не утратит окончательно своей научно-богословской силы, пока в ней совершенно не иссякнет дух Горского». При Горском возник Академический храм, посвященный Покрову Божией Матери. IN TRINITY-SERGIUS LAVRA
(Dedicated to 190th Anniversary of Moscow Theological Academy
at the Monastery of St. Sergius of Radonezh)
A new seminary, known as the “Lavra Seminary” or “The Holy Trinity Seminary” was opened as early as 1742 in the Royal Chambers building of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra. From its very foundation it had a close connection with the Slavonic, Greek and Latin Academy (Slaviano-greko-latinskaia academia). In fact, the same teachers taught in both schools, and the Seminary’s curriculum closely followed the model of the Academy, while the academic level at the seminary in no way was below that of the Academy. All of that paved the way for a future merger of the two schools.
As early as the middle of the 18th century the rectors of the Academy expressed the opinion that it might be better for the Academy to be moved to a quieter location more suitable for scholarly studies. According to its Charter “…the Academy was to be located not in the city but outside… away from the secular noise and various worldly activities that get in the way of learning and distract young people from their studies…” (paragraph 19). Archimandrite Mitrofan (Slotvensky) referred to this paragraph shortly after the fire of 1737 in his request to move the Academy to a different location. The Commission for Theological Schools examining the request made a decision following the spirit of the Academy’s Charter: “…Academy being a school common for the entire province (okrug)… should be to a lesser extent attached to the location of the diocesan administration… it must be as far as possible from the distractions inherent to highly populated cities. Being a community of academics it must not be in a place where the academics would be swallowed into politics…”
However, this issue was raised seriously only in 1775. Empress Catherine II ordered the Synod, “…to find a different place for the Moscow Academy due to the fact that its present location is extremely unsuitable for a school…” Even though the number of seminarians was increasing and the buildings in the Zaikonospassky Monastery had become dilapidated long ago, it was not until 1797 that the Synod was able “to find a different place” for the Academy at the Donskoi Monastery. However, construction of new buildings in that monastery required substantial funding, and this plan was rejected. Thereafter, the Synod decided to move the Academy to Lavra. However, Metropolitan Platon of Moscow (Levshin) spoke decidedly against it, in turn, suggesting the facilities at the New Jerusalem Monastery of the Resurrection. The rationale of the venerable hierarch was that in that case the same person could serve as rector of the Academy and as superior of the monastery.
The 1812 fire in Moscow became a milestone in the history of the Academy. “The sad story of the sufferings of clergy in Moscow in 1812 was to begin with the Zaikonospassky Monastery, where the enemy broke in shortly after entering Moscow… ” – says a historian of that era. The monastery was robbed and plundered; the monks remaining in it were beaten, tortured and killed. Even though the fire did not destroy the monastery buildings, they were severely damaged. Nonetheless, all the efforts were made to resume the classes; and by March 31, 1813 Archbishop Avgustin of Moscow (Vinogradsky) inaugurated the new school . There were many problems with the classrooms: “…very old, very small and very uncomfortable, ” - Archbishop Avgustin wrote to the Commission for Theological Schools. This coincided with end of the first graduation at the St. Petersburg Theological Seminary reorganized in 1809, Metropolitan Platon had died by then and there was no one else strongly opposed to moving Academy to Lavra. In 1814 the Commission for Theological Schools finally made the decision to move the Moscow Theological Seminary to the Trinity-Sergius Lavra.
Inauguration of the Academy at the Lavra (from Slavonic, Greek and Latin renamed Theological Academy) was on the feast of the Protection of Theotokos on October 1, 1814. Students of the old Academy and the Holy Trinity Seminary made about one third of the body of first year students; Archimandrite Simeon (Krylov-Platonov) remained in the position of rector at the new school. Out of the twelve Bachelors appointed by the Commission for Theological Schools as professors in 1814, three, hieromonks Germogen (Speransky), Nikanor (Klementevsky), and Feoktist (Orlovsky), came from the old Academy, one hieromonk Vladimir (Sorokin) came from the Lavra Seminary, and eight from the first graduates of the St. Petersburg Academy.
It has to be underscored that it was not a new school but the same Academy reorganized in order to improve and expand theological education. Speaking about the Academy at the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the move to Lavra, N. V. Sushkov rightfully said, “October 1, in essence, should be called a celebration of renovation, because the Moscow Slavonic, Greek and Latin Academy after 130 years of its existence before Lavra, was transformed and renovated in it… therefore it is not 50 but 180 years old.”
In the minds of the contemporaries, Academy at the Zaikonospassky Monastery and at the Trinity-Sergius Lavra was the same school. At the end of the 19th century Archimandrite Antonii, in his greeting to the Academy, spoke about 200 years of its history. Later on M. Bogoslovsky reiterated, “There was no need to create the Moscow Academy from scratch. It had existed since 1685... In its century long history, the old Slavonic, Greek and Latin Academy, creation of the Likhudov brothers, changed many times.” E. E. Golubinsky also wrote, “The Moscow Theological Academy was the former Moscow Slavonic, Greek and Latin Academy.” As a matter of fact, it could not have been any different. After all, the Academy in the 18th century was a creation of Metropolitan Platon, and at its foundation were his best students and closest associates, such as Metropolitan Evgenii (Bolkhovitinov) and Archbishop Avgustin (Vonogradsky), while its academic direction the school owed to Metropolitan Filaret, another student of Metropolitan Platon.
Charter (Ustav) of 1814
Finally, another critical motivation for a major reform of the old Academy was the new 1814 Charter of Theological Schools.
This laborious and difficult task to design a plan of reformation of theological schools was assigned in 1804 to Bishop Evgenii (Bolkhovitinov), a vicar in the St. Petersburg Diocese. He sympathized with the progressive trends of that era, and, as early as 1805, he made up a plan of a reform in theological education based on the unfulfilled projects from the reign of Catherine II and the new rules for secular schools. However, many hierarchs were opposed to the reforms. Metropolitan Platon of Moscow wrote about the proposed plan, “The structure (of the schools) before this moment has been praiseworthy and the teaching has been done very thoroughly… however, if the new method is introduced, one can hardly expect any improvement, but more complications and confusion.”
However, the Emperor, influenced by the Synodal Procurator, prince A. N. Golitsyn took the side of the reformers, and in 1807 he instituted the Committee for Improvement of Theological Schools, where prince A. N. Golitsyn, State Secretary M. M. Speransky and Bishop Feofilakt (Rusanov) played the key roles. One year after, the committee was renamed Committee for Theological Schools and became the supreme authority for theological schools. By February 1809, M. M. Speransky compiled the first part of the academic charter about the internal government in the academies. The new charter finished by Bishop Feofilakt was tested in 1810 at the new St. Petersburg Theological Academy. The Rector of the Academy, young Archimandrite Filaret (Drozdov) was assigned to oversee the process. After the first graduation in 1814 he made his comments and revisions in the charter aimed against restriction of the rector’s authority and against the focus on the European enlighteners, “followers of the Voltairian philosophy.” According to the new Charter, the highest academic authority was the Academic Conference, chaired by the diocesan bishop and including the faculty, as well as the honorary members of the Academy. The Conference censored religious books, designed exams and awarded academic degrees. The Theological Academy was supposed to become an academic and an educational center for several dioceses making a province (okrug). Among its aims were such as protection of piety and promotion of religious education. There were four such provinces described in the plan: St. Petersburg, Moscow, Kiev, and Kazan. On August 30, 1814 Czar Alexander I ratified the version of the charter for religious schools (academies, seminaries and colleges) proposed by Archimandrite Filaret.
Era of Metropolitan Filaret
The first five years at the new location the Academy lived under the supervision of Archbishop Avgustin (Vinogradsky) of Moscow, himself a graduate of the old Moscow Academy and a former rector of the Holy Trinity Seminary, and later, of the old Moscow Academy, a student and a close associate of Metropolitan Platon. Archbishop Filaret (Drozdov) was appointed to the Moscow Eparchy in 1821 succeeding Archbishop Avgustin after the repose of the latter. Thus, the Academy was passed into the hands of Archbishop Filaret from the hands of Metropolitan Platon. There is an obvious act of Divine Providence in the succession from one great hierarch to the other. The reign of each hierarch in Moscow made an era: Metropolitan Platon ruled the diocese for 37 years (from 1775 through 1812), and Metropolitan Filaret ruled for 46 years (from 1821 through 1867).
According to one of the researchers, “in two centuries of modern history of the Russian Church there are only two names no other name can compare with in historic significance, i.e. Metropolitans of Moscow, Platon and Filaret. Teacher and student, like two suns, with whom all other figures of the modern church history are only stars… two eras, one succeeding the other in the history of religious thought and life.”
All historians and scholars unanimously agree that in the entire three hundred years of the Academy, Metropolitan Filaret (Drozdov; 1783-1867) was the most prominent figure. He was one of those people intended for a special mission of spiritual leadership. As no one else, Metropolitan Filaret combined qualities of church hierarch and theologian, statesman and ascetic, taxonomist and poet, scholar and elder. Metropolitan Filaret was able to see clearly the essence of every event and fact he had to deal with. Metropolitan Filaret left his mark on history in every area of religious and social life of the Church. It was a special act of Devine Providence that at the new stage of its life the Academy was under the immediate leadership of such an extraordinary personality as Metropolitan Filaret, near the relics of one of Russia’s greatest saints. It is true that he did very much for the St. Petersburg Academy and even for the Kiev Academy as well. But only the Moscow Theological Academy was a creation of Metropolitan Filaret in the fullest sense of the word. It is often without exaggeration called Filaret’s Academy. Not only did Metropolitan Filaret follow every step of the Academy with love and care. He gave her the spirit and the direction, which were not lost after his repose in 1867. One can see it clearly in the writings of the hierarch.
As A. M. Bukharev aptly said, “Filaret poses a great puzzle to the Orthodox Russian thought, and, at the same time, directs the Russian thought to the best solution of it.” He was a vigilant guardian of theological purity. According to the same A. M. Bukharev, “Everybody remembers at the Moscow Academy, when Metropolitan Filaret became angry at the explanation (by F. A. Golubinsky) of the Hegelian system, distorting the fundamentals of Christianity.”
The precision of every word and every element of a single thought is amazing in the writings of Metropolitan Filaret. It is obvious that the fundamental idea for Metropolitan Filaret was that Christ was the Truth and the Life. Therefore, Filaret’s theology is vital and universal. Life in the Truth, and Truth in Life – that is the two-in-one foundation of true theological reasoning according to the Metropolitan Filaret. Metropolitan Filaret died in 1867 having served his Liturgy on the day of his repose. He went to the other world, admired as a great defender of Orthodoxy full of true apostolic fervor. Endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace (Ephesians 4: 3) – that was the ideal, which the Academy achieved under Metropolitan Filaret. Filaret’s Academy is a scholarly brotherhood in which the essence of Orthodox Theology was understood in unity of piety and scholarship.
Metropolitan Filaret was lead by the idea to create a steady theological succession, undisturbed by external influences. He wrote to the Synodal Procurator N. A. Protasov, “…candidates for the position of rector and professors of the Academy must not come from anywhere farther than the local academy and the local seminaries… it is the best place for completion of academic studies, with a greater number of available teaching resources, and larger community of academics and intellectuals found anywhere else.”
Being a student at the Academy made one eligible for a “class rank”: a student was granted the 14th Class of state service. This important privilege made the Academy equal in status to the boarding schools for nobles, i.e. making it suitable for children of Russian and foreign aristocracy, and clergy.
The curriculum was made up of two years of study. A new curriculum according to the Charter of 1814 was being introduced gradually. The following is the list of courses taught at the Academy at its opening in 1814: Interpretation of the Holy Scriptures, Philosophy, General Literacy, General Secular History, Mathematics, Hebrew, Greek, German, French and English. Dogmatic Theology was introduced in 1816, Moral Theology – in 1817. Along with those the curriculum included courses in Pastoral Theology, Church Rhetoric, Church History, Canon (Church) Law (1840), Patristics (1841), Metaphysics (1842), History of Philosophy (1843), Biblical History, Russian Secular History, Church Archeology (1844). Such was the curriculum until 1869. The “Survey of Theological Studies for Teaching in Higher Theological Schools” by Metropolitan Filaret was laid in the foundation of the program. The latter, being an example of a brief survey of theology, was commissioned to Metropolitan Filaret by the Commission for Theological Schools in 1814. According to Metropolitan Filaret, theological training has the following order: a) Reading of the Holy Scriptures b) Theological Interpretation c) Contemplative Theology d) Active Theology e) Theology of Accusation f) Theology of Conversation g) Theology of Government or Canon Law.” On can still feel the influence of 18th century theology in this work of Metropolitan Filaret, however, its strict organization, integrity, and clarity of definitions were a key to the future development and improvement of theology.
While perfecting theological education, the Academy had to take into account the general direction of the cultural development at that time. Introduction of Mathematics and classical languages was associated with the idea of good education that was prevalent at the time. The level of language training was in no way below that of such privileged schools as the Lyceum, where “teaching Latin and Greek was one of the fundamentals (of education)…” according to § 61 of the Charter because “experience shows how insufficient modern languages are for development of intellect and taste in youth, and how critical classical languages are.” According to a historian of the Moscow Academy, Archpriest Sergii Smirnov, “students were assigned to translate entire works of Church Fathers.” One should mention that compared to the second half of the 20th century, according to the new reform of theological education in the late 1990’s the Moscow Theological Seminary and Academy increased focus on classical languages.
At the same time, training in Greek increased due to the 1821 decree of the Holy Synod “About education of people in Orthodoxy through diocesan clergy and training in theological schools.” Metropolitan Filaret suggested “to allow using sermons of Holy Fathers for interpretation of the Holy Scriptures… and to have the former selected for that purpose and translated.”
Metropolitan Filaret’s reports and letters to the Synodal Procurator best of all speak of the condition and gradual development of the Academy. In 1820, Metropolitan wrote, “In the past six years… one sees maturity of ideas among the senior professors and a greater impact they have on the spirit of students. The majority of the junior professors meet their expectations. The student community seems more focused on reaching a common goal, i.e. true education of spirit by laws of Christianity.”
Metropolitan Filaret emphasized the role of Divine services in theological education. Here is one of his comments on church singing: “No matter what one may think of it, in my opinion, singing in church is an important part of the trial students have to go through. One’s spirit is tested through sounds; deep emotions produce good feelings that are just as important as good thoughts.”
In 1822 praising the rector, Archimandrite Kirill (Bogoslovsky-Platonov), Metropolitan wrote with satisfaction, “…Accomplishments of this school are great, and there is obvious maturity among the students compared to previous years, which one would expect in a new school if run properly.”
However, Metropolitan was not always satisfied with the Academy. He thought that a better coordination of school administration and academic work of the rector with the will of the ruling bishop was desired. He disapproved of Archimandrite Polikarp’s (Gaitannikov) scholastic style of teaching Dogmatic Theology that was typical for almost all other rectors. Metropolitan wanted to see devoted and loyal people in the key positions of the Academy.
In 1833 seminarian Pavel Fiveisky (future Archbishop Platon of Kostroma) wrote in a private letter, “We have a new inspector, a young and very good looking Bachelor Filaret. We are all happy to have him.” That “Bachelor” that students liked so much was no one other than the future prominent scholar and cleric, Archbishop Filaret of Chernigov (Gumilevsky; 1805-1866). Not only students noticed him. Metropolitan Filaret astutely recognized the talents of this learned monk and promoted him to the position of rector in 1835, where he remained through 1841. Archbishop Filaret (Gumilevsky) combined qualities of a pedagogue, preacher, administrator, and a humble monastic. “He would have tears in his eyes starting from the Cherubic Hymn through the Communion; and having partaken of the Holy Gifts and while saying Communion Prayers we would sob. For a long time after Communion he could not stop crying…” - wrote one of his biographers. It was Archbishop Filaret’s (Gumilevsky) idea to publish the writings of the Holy Fathers at the Moscow Theological Academy. In 1835 he submitted a draft of this publication to Metropolitan Filaret.
By assignment of the Synodal Procurator N. A. Protasov in 1840, Archimandrite Nikodim (Kazantsev), who was from the seventh graduating class at the Academy, outlined a plan for the publication of writings of the Holy Fathers. The underlying concept of this series was his deepest conviction that “only when Russian theologians are able to read works of Holy Fathers in Russian, one could expect them to be mature theologians, independent from Latin, German, French and English theologians and theologies.”
By decision of the Office of Religious Education, translation of the Holy Fathers was assigned to the Moscow Theological Academy. Similar work was being done in other academies, especially in St. Petersburg, where writings of the Fathers were being published since 1821 in Khristianskoe Chtenie (Christian Reading) journal. However, the best translations came out of the Moscow Academy. In translating the works of the Church Fathers it was required “to translate and publish everything critical and important without omission, starting from the main fathers: Athanasios of Alexandria, Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian, and John Chrysostom. Recommended deadlines: 10 printed pages every 3-4 months.” As early as 1842 the editorial board submitted the first translated writings of St. Gregory the Theologian to Metropolitan Filaret.
At the same time the Academy started to publish a newspaper “Pribavlenia k Tvoreniam Sviatykh Otsov” (Additions to Writings of the Holy Fathers). This was an event of extraordinary importance. In general, an indispensable condition for development of Orthodox Theology and Orthodox spiritual life was the unbroken connection with the tradition of the Holy Fathers. Having started systematically publishing with a series of patristic writings, Moscow Academy initiated the beginning of a rebirth of true Orthodox Theology. Although, publication of its own theological works was not always successful (there was still a very strong influence of Catholic and Protestant theology) a great amount of work was being done to prepare the soil for the future foundation of independent theological criteria. The “Pribavlenia” published various articles on theology and church history.
Moscow Theological Academy was involved in translating the Bible into contemporary Russian, although in this case its role was not primary. Most of the work was done in St. Petersburg. Moscow Academy translated from Hebrew the books of Exodus and Deuteronomy. Out of the books of the New Testament, the Academy translated the Gospel of Mark and the Epistles of St. Paul to the Galatians and to the Romans, and revised and corrected translation of the four Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles done by the other academies. The Academy fulfilled this task with honor.
Archimandrite Filaret (Gumilevsky), as a professor, and later a rector brought a new trend into teaching and academic work. “Syllabi and course programs compiled by the faculty at the Moscow Academy were often better than those in other academies,” – wrote his biographer. For example, course programs in Logic and Psychology of the Moscow Academy were found the best “in clarity, completeness and systematic integrity”, and these programs were sent to universities for use. Therefore, the Moscow Academy under the leadership of Archimandrite Filaret academically stood above other academies, and was a leader in teaching liberal arts among secular higher schools.” He also revised the History program, which had had no scholarly approach before, and created his own course in History of the Russian Church, which found great interest among students.
In the report to the Holy Synod about the state of affairs at the Academy in 1838 under Archimandrite Filaret, Metropolitan emphasized “the state of improvement,” “peaceful harmony,” “spirit of attention and diligence in duties, obedience and humility inspiring administrators and faculty, which were communicated to the students… The religious subjects are taught according to the purpose of the school, and the secular subjects in no way conflict with the religious material. I paid a special attention to… the teaching of Dogmatic Theology, which the rector of the school taught it according to his own notes… appropriately explaining the Orthodox doctrine.”
The years of diligent work in improving the academic and spiritual level of the Academy paid off. The same highly spiritual atmosphere remained at the Academy under the following rector, Archimandrite Evsevii (Orlinsky) from 1841 through 1847. In 1842 Metropolitan Filaret wrote to the Synod, “The fundamental academic subject, Dogmatic Theology, is taught and received thoroughly and in the spirit of Orthodoxy.” In his survey of other courses he continued, “The state of the Academy in general, both from an academic and moral perspective, was satisfactory and comforting. The spirit of humble piety, reverence… filial obedience to Church authority, mutual peace and agreement, diligence in service inspired the administrators and faculty and made an impact on students, whose behavior and attitude are evidence of good continuity.”
Out of the following rectors, one has to mention Archimandrite Sergii (Liapidevsky; 1820-1898), the future Metropolitan of Moscow, a graduate of the Academy, whose tenure was from 1857 through 1861. Metropolitan Filaret supported and respected Archimandrite Sergii. Bishop Ignatii (Brianchaninov), a prominent religious writer of the 19th century visited the Academy during his tenure.
Archimandrite Savva (Tikhomirov; 1819-1896) was appointed rector of the Moscow Academy from 1861 through 1862 after Archimandrite Sergii. He became Archbishop of Tver and Kashinskoe later. He is renowned for his research in Church Archeology and the multi-volume autobiography “Khronika moei zhizni” (The Chronicle of My Life), a valuable source for the history of Russian religious life in the second half of the 19th century, and at the Moscow Theological Academy in particular.
Rector of the Academy, Professor Archpriest A. V. Gorsky
One of the most prominent figures in the history of the Academy was a wonderful churchman, professor Archpriest Aleksandr Vasilevich Gorsky (1824-1875). He was nurtured by the Academy and devoted to it all his energy and talents. Years of his tenure (1862-1875) were among the most vivid academic periods in the history of the Moscow Theological Academy.
Gorsky’s diary, which he kept from his youth, is an exceptionally valuable evidence of his spiritual life and a gradual growth of Orthodox spirit. These records he made in his youth demonstrate amazing depth and elevation of thinking; it is a diary of a true theologian. His life was centered on Holy Eucharist. At the age of 22 Gorsky wrote, “O, Blessed minutes of the Holy Eucharist! Only if you could last forever, become eternal for my soul! I can leave everything, and forget everything for you. I notice for myself, I can see it clearly that the moments when I partake of the Holy Mysteries have such a great power over my soul! Everything becomes more peaceful, warmer, and softer somehow! My soul – more loving and happier! Fear and sense of unworthiness that possessed her, now blend into thanksgiving and doxology. O, Lord! Prolong these holy feelings in my heart...” Ever since he was a young man it was his nature to feel lonesome, which is often the case with spiritually gifted people. However, Filaret Gumilevsky became his close spiritual friend. Gorsky was drawn to monasticism since his youth and although he never became a monk his status in the secular world did not prevent him from leading a truly monastic lifestyle. Church was a living organism for him. According to professor N. I. Subbotin, “His example, without any doubt, had a positive impact on the majority of students.” He was ordained a priest only when he was 49, with administering Holy Eucharist remaining the central part of his priesthood. Even in his lectures Gorsky emphasized the importance of Eucharist in Church History. He was a celibate priest, a very rare case for that time.
For Father Alexander, every student was a future servant of Christ’s Holy Church before anything else. He was known for his equal and attentive treatment of all students. He focused on spiritual and moral aspects in his teaching approach. Students loved their rector and he loved them. For all students he was a “father.” In return, Father Alexander would refer to his students as “my children.” “A positive spirit of family… among representatives of the highest Christian scholarship” was prevalent at the Academy during Gorsky’s tenure. The Academy became “an active Christian family.” Gorsky was “the spirit, the head, a strong moral force uniting all” into an “academic circle.” Father Alexander took part in all aspects of academic life, being able to find time to visit and care for the sick. His supervision was spiritual leadership. One of Gorky’s students wrote, “Hearing and seeing me talk with Fr. Alexander one could think it was a conversation between a wise and graceful Church Father and a daring neophyte of pagan origin, if not a pagan.”
Spiritual leadership went along with academics. Father Alexander was the Academy’s librarian for a number of years. His encyclopedic knowledge assisted him in suggesting the best books that would most benefit students. His teaching “was highly humble, patient, accessible, life-giving and full of love… his extensive knowledge never made him proud.”
One of Father Alexander’s greatest contributions was that, in essence he was the founder of the new Russian Church History as scholarship. He was not a mere taxonomist. He had his own theological concept of history, where he saw the works all three Persons of the Holy Trinity. According to Gorsky, the main aspect of history is the relationship of God and man, where the goal of a historian is to see the spiritual meaning behind each event. Gorksy’s academic accomplishments are closely related to his profound knowledge. “He was a living encyclopedia of various theological information, where one could find not only a short answer but a detailed account on any topic.”
A member of various academic societies, Archpriest A. V. Gorsky corresponded and worked with many outstanding scholars of his time: O. Bodiansky, A. Vostokov and others. Of extraordinary significance is “A Description of Manuscripts at the Moscow Synodal Library,” which he compiled in cooperation with K. I. Nevostruev. This research was the initiative of Metropolitan Filaret, who recognized Gorky’s modesty and devotion to church scholarship.
The 50th anniversary of reorganization was celebrated at the Academy in 1864 during Gorsky’s tenure as rector. Metropolitan Filaret, in his survey of achievements within that period, mentioned the influence of the Academy on clergy in Moscow. In his 1863 Moscow Eparchy report Metropolitan wrote, “Clergy of the capital, many whom are Academy graduates… have an advantage over the clergy in the rest of the diocese, both in education and in moral standards… and that makes a positive impact on the parishioners…”
In another letter, petitioning for additional funds and rewarding Academy’s accomplishments, Metropolitan spoke of its high academic standing and devotion of the faculty, “…It would be unfair if I gave the Moscow Academy lesser credit than the St. Petersburg Academy. It would be very modest if I said that the status of the Moscow Academy is in no way lower in academic and spiritual standing… It is an honorary quality of the faculty at the Academy that, among other things, with such a scarce funding, they do not leave the school for a more profitable place, even when they are asked.”
A summary of accomplishments and impact made by the Academy in the past fifty years was given in the speeches made by guests and members of the Academy. Professor S. Smirnov described the academic and theological work in translating of the Holy Scriptures and patristic writings, as well as publications by members of the faculty on various topics. The biggest accomplishment of the Academy was the steadfast spirit of Orthodoxy. In fifty years the Academy gave the Russian Church 26 hierarchs, with the total number of 1,164 graduates.
S. I. Barshev, rector of the Moscow University, and a graduate of the Academy spoke of the impact made by the Academy in these words, “God must have blessed her work. Graduates of the Moscow Theological Academy work everywhere in the same spirit they were instilled by the school’s unforgettable faculty. Many of them have earned recognition for their contribution to Church and scholarship: some as hierarchs, some as educators and school administrators, others as clerics.” The University is happy with the success of the Academy, because “the Truth must be proclaimed and spread…”
The Kiev Theological Academy explained the close and steady relationship between the two schools as between two sisters. “Theology is a one of those links connecting Kiev and Moscow, and it will remain as long as Russian people exist.”
The Charter of 1869 was introduced during Gorsky’s tenure. According to the Charter the highest authority for school was the Council of the Academy. All important issues at the Academy were addressed at the general meetings. The entire faculty was to elect new professors. New Charter allowed greater possibilities for admission: not only seminary graduates but also public school (gymnasia) graduates could be admitted into Academy. The Charter also allowed for admission of non-matriculated students. It was allowed to publish lectures and initiate academic societies. Academies were granted internal censorship privileges. Mandatory doctoral degree for the rector and faculty was an important change. All those measures contributed to more active academic life.
The new Charter came out after thorough preparation. Standards of theological training in European countries were taken into account. The 1869 Charter met standards of that time and it allowed Archpriest A. V. Gorsky to direct the life of the Academy accordingly. In later memoirs of contemporaries we find, “The genius of the creators was in the knowledge of details of academic life: a balanced combination of form and idea, flesh and spirit, Law and blessed love.”
The first Doctoral Defense at the Academy occurred in December of 1871 shortly after the enactment of the new Charter. As regards to other academies it was the fourth such defense. The first doctoral candidate at the Academy was Archimandrite Mikhail (Luzin), thereafter, a successor of Father Alexander Gorsky as rector. He defended a dissertation “O Evangeliakh i evangelskoi istorii po povodu knigi ‘Zhizn Isusa’ E. Renana” (About Gospels and the Evangelic Story Regarding to Book “Life of Jesus” by E. Renan). Successful defense of the first dissertation at the Academy was made into a solemn celebration with Metropolitan Inokentii of Moscow and other hierarchs present. According to one of the publications in the collection “U Troitsy v Akademii” (At the Trinity Academy), “One may say without exaggeration that all the best that is happening at the Academy comes from Gorsky; and the Academy will not loose its academic and theological standing as long as it preserves Gorsky’s spirit.” Of course “Gorsky’s Spirit” was also the spirit of Metropolitan Filaret.
During Gorsky’s tenure a new church dedicated to the Protection of the Mother of God was opened at the Academy. The church was made in the assembly hall of the Academy with the most ardent support of Metropolitan Inokentii (Veniaminov) of Moscow. It was consecrated on the day of St. Aleksii, Metropolitan of Moscow on February 12, 1870. The idea of a new church existed for a long time; however, Metropolitan Filaret did not support the idea, being afraid that having their own church would estrange the Academy from Lavra. Shortly after the new church, Gorsky received permission for the Academy’s cemetery at the garden. Now the faculty members were able to remain with the academy after their repose.
An eminent scholar, Gorsky was that special type of Christian academic, who are nurtured in the peace of monastic cells. Self-denying in everything, serving the Divine Revelation as the highest purpose of knowledge, trying to combine scholarship with pastoral service, devotion to tradition and authority, precision and carefulness in every issue – all of these qualities brought him closer to the ideal of an Orthodox scholar of the new age. Gorsky had many students and followers. One can speak of him as of the founder of a new historical school. Gorsky’s works remain valuable sources to present day.
Academy in the Late 19th – Early 20th Century
One should mention rector of the Academy professor Archpriest Sergei Konstantinovich Smirnov among the successors of A. V. Gorsky. He was the second secular cleric in this position after Father Alexander Gorsky. After 35 years of service as a professor he was appointed rector by the Holy Synod, and, as a consequence of this appointment, towards the end of his life, he was ordained priest. We should mention that Archpriest S. K. Smirnov was a scholar of the Academy’s and Seminary’s history. He was the author of “Istoria Moskovskoi Slaviano-greko-latinskoi akademii” (A History of Slavonic, Greek and Latin Academy. M., 1855), “Istoria Troitskoi Lavrskoi Seminarii” (A History of the Holy Trinity Lavra Seminary. M., 1867) and “Istoria Moskovskoi Akademii do ee preobrazovaniia: (1814-1870)” (A History of the Moscow Academy before its Reorganization. M., 1879), comprehensive sources of information about the Academy and the Seminary. Having read the manuscript of the first book, Metropolitan Filaret made a number of critical comments, though, overall his review was very positive. He wrote, “I am returning… the manuscript of the History of Slavonic, Greek and Latin Academy. The analysis of theological systems is worth attention, and, I hope, this history will be better than the History of Kiev Academy” (by V. I. Askochensky). This book of S. K. Smirnov, similar to the other two, was very valuable for its time. We see evidence of that in the positive reviews it received and the private letters addressed to the author. He was able to demonstrate both the development of religious education in Russia as well as the Russian Theology. This book was recognized abroad and received some reviews in Germany. In the West, there was a very vague idea of theological scholarship in Russia. Smirnov’s works eliminated some of the stereotypes about the “ignorance” of the Russian Church.
S. K. Smirnov was the author of many other works in church and secular Russian history, contemporary issues, as well as the New Testament and patristic philology that earned him the reputation of an outstanding linguist. He wrote a number of sermons, lectures and other works. Students respected Sergei Konstantinovich. One of his students, Bishop Aleksii of Mozhaiskoe (the former professor A. F. Lavrov of the Moscow Academy) wrote to Smirnov on the 35th anniversary of his teaching, “Your class was my favorite, and your lectures made a strong impression on all the students; your literary and academic works always were the most exquisite and interesting to read, containing an abundance of new information, sound and realistic in their perspective.”
Brotherhood of Venerable Sergius for Support to Destitute Students and Graduates of the Moscow Theological Academy was founded in 1880. It was one of many similar organizations of this type that became very common after the 1864 “Basic Regulations for Orthodox Church Groups.” Over 700 brotherhoods were founded in the next 50 years before 1914. Such brotherhoods were an expression of the desire of believers to support the Orthodox Church similar to the brotherhoods of the Middle Ages defending Orthodoxy in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. “Brotherhood of Venerable Sergius” was primarily a benevolent organization. There were a number of other educational and benevolent organizations founded later. The 1884 Charter was introduced during the tenure of S. K. Smirnov.
New ideas in the life of the Moscow Academy came with the tenure of Archimandrite Antonii (Khrapovitsky) in 1890-1895, the former rector of the St. Petersburg Theological Seminary. In his late twenties, the new rector was just a little bit older than his students. His appearance at the Academy was rather unusual. One of his students wrote later, “The fact, incredible at the time, that the new rector, Father Antonii arrived at the Academy only with a wanderer’s staff in one hand and a suitcase with religious books in the other, with nothing else immediately said to us… that the new rector would bring us a new current and a completely new lifestyle.” Antonii was the most typical and a very sincere example of an educated monastic. He had a critical and sharp mind. A prominent preacher and pastor, he wanted to unite the Academy into a single family. The teachings and lectures (in Pastoral Theology) of the young rector were very mature. In his first address to the Academy he described the true path of the Church that would allow “the world to achieve that spiritual joy and spiritual revival, which it has been seeking in vain and about which the Church is teaching with such confidence.”
Archimandrite Antonii described the goals of theological education in a number of detailed theses. “The holy and regenerating content of Church life… requires… that people gifted with knowledge could explain it in definitive and clearly stated terms, accessible for the inquisitive minds of modern people; demonstrating the unbroken and indispensable relationship of the Church with perfection in virtue, for that purpose, using the intrinsic meaning of the Holy Scriptures and patristic writings, studying the constant struggle of a Christian with the worldly spirit in the history of the Church and peoples, researching in worship the true path towards God and perfection through spiritual sacrifice, and, finally, making correct laws of knowledge and thought through philosophical studies. Understanding of the Holy Scriptures, asceticism, historical and liturgical qualities of true Orthodox theology in connection with the culture of thinking – all of that is available, however, only through personal knowledge from experience of the Truth as the highest reality of being. It must be clear at this point that… a student needs to live a Christian life lest he becomes similar to a blind man trying to learn art, or a deaf person trying to learn music… Therefore, blessed is scholarship, education or knowledge of life and eloquence! May they not be separate from prayer, obedience, brotherly love and temperate chastity, without which no growth and no life are possible
A new journal “Bogoslovskii Vestnik” (Theologian Herald) came out in 1892 during the tenure of Archimandrite Anatonii, soon becoming one of the best theological journals. Professor P. I. Gorsky-Platonov played a major role in it becoming its first chief editor. “Bogoslovskii Vestnik” replaced “Pribavlenia k tvoreniam sviatykh otsov”. The writings of the Holy Fathers from now on came out as a supplement to the new journal. The entire faculty was considered in charge of the journal. Works of many prominent scholars of the Moscow Academy appeared in print for the first time in the journal. A large amount of space was devoted to criticism. The current events in the life of the Academy were reflected on the pages of the new journal in the articles put out by the Council and in reviews of student work.
The number of enrolled students at the Moscow Academy and others dropped significantly towards the end of the 19th century. “The number of enrolled students was continuously growing and reached 300 students in 1888. Thereafter, due to new restrictions it began to drop; in 1899 there were only 191 Russians and 24 foreign students. The number of students in all four academies in 1898 reached a low of 900.” That was the number of young scholars Russia was entering into the new 20th century with.
Starting with the tenure of Bishop Arsenii (Stadnitsky) all rectors of the Academy were bishops. The first rector in bishop’s rank was Bishop Khristofor (Smirnov) consecrated in 1889, whose tenure was from 1886 through 1890.
Bishop Arsenii was the third vicar in the Moscow Eparchy. Having a rector in bishop’s rank raised the prestige of the Academy. Archimandrite Arsenii was consecrated Bishop of Volokolamsk at the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in 1899. There was a reception at the Academy in the honor of rector-bishop. Arsenii’s successor, Evdokim (Meshchersky, 1903-1906) was also made a bishop. Faculty and students responded to all the events occurring in Russia. In 1909 began the tenure of Feodor (Pozdeevsky), Bishop of Volokolamsk, and the fourth vicar in the Moscow Eparchy. According to the memoirs of S. N. Postnikov, “Tall, thin, with glasses in black frame, coal-black hair and sharp eyes, Feodor seemed to us to be the strictest monastic with strong will and inexorable to the weaknesses of the youth…” Bishop Feodor wrote his Master’s Thesis in ascetic works of Venerable John Cassianos the Roman and taught Pastoral Theology at the Moscow Academy. His study of asceticism must have made a strong impact on him. Outwardly strict, “he loved youth and lived for it approving us and at the same time he made us love him. Cold and reserved in conversation he attracted the young people and made everyone respect him” – wrote one of his students. Hard-edged and direct, Bishop Feodor directed the life of the Academy in strict order. One of his typical statements he said at the beginning of classes in September of 1915 was, “In Church life there may be and there must be only one reform: repentance and prayer, and everything else that is useful, of course, will come from this blessed reform of the spirit.”
The new reform of theological schools was discussed in late 19th century and later at the meetings before the General Council. As early as 1897, N. N. Golubkovsky wrote about “decline in theological work among the Academy’s students.” It was attributed in the shortcomings of the 1884 Charter. Archbishop Anatonii of Volhynia, the former rector of the Academy, harshly criticized the Charter of 1884 suggesting to centralize the programs updating them to the needs of contemporary life, thus, reinforcing the declining Church spirit. According to Archbishop Antonii’s special report in 1909 made by request of P. Izvolsky, “The Synod must provide standard programs for each subject, as it is done by the Ministry of People’s Education (for secular schools). Academies must teach the complete Holy Bible and History of Patristics. The academies must start departments for history of Church art teaching history of church architecture, painting and singing. Students must be familiarized with all Christian holy sites in a course of Christian geography, explaining religious and theological teachings of different Orthodox peoples. There is none and there has never been any of that… Liturgics and Pastoral Theology must be taught only by clerics. All other theological subjects may be taught by lay professors only three years, thereafter either becoming priests or seek other vocations.” After the debates the Holy Synod developed a new Charter, passed in 1910 and revised in 1912.
The break out of World War I coincided with the 100th Anniversary of relocation of the Academy to Holy Trinity-Sergius Lavra. The planned celebrations were canceled until a “more favorable moment.” Academy published a collection of memoirs, and a two-volume edition of scholarly works by Academy’s professors. These publications made a large contribution to the history of the Academy and its academic work. Articles of the most prominent scholars of the Academy published in the jubilee collection, remain valuable sources of information to this day.
Despite the war, many graduates of the Academy actively responded to the anniversary. A meeting in celebration of the jubilee was held at the headquarters of the Moscow Eparchy. Aside from the publications put out by the Academy, there was another collection of memoirs that came out under the name “U Troitsy v Akademii” (At the Trinity Academy).
The turmoil of 1917 affected the Moscow Academy as well. As early as March 13, 1917, that is 10 days after the February Revolution, the new Procurator of the Holy Synod, V. N. Lvov, sent professor B. V. Titlinov for revision of the Academy. As a result of that, Bishop Feodor was removed from his office and appointed to oversee the Danilov Monastery. The Inspector of the Academy, Archimandrite Ilarion (Troitsky) was temporarily appointed as deputy rector. The revision found certain actions of the rector inappropriate though no public clarification followed. At the same time, priest Pavel Florensky was removed from his position as the editor of the “Theologian Herald,” and was replaced by professor M. M. Tareev. The composition of the Holy Synod also changed. “The new Holy Synod, in a sense, is a provisional revolutionary church government representing the clergy and the people ” – wrote the Theologian Herald
Rapid political changes inspired a part of the faculty to request a new academic Charter that would reflect the contemporary democratic reforms. The Holy Synod established new “provisional regulations” allowing a part of the faculty to be elected.
The question of new Charter for the theological academies became very controversial. A conference of educated monastics took place in Moscow in July with the blessing of the Holy Synod and the participants spoke strongly against the idea of independence of the academies. Moreover, with respect to the new Charter, they suggested that one of the Academies should remain unchanged with the entire faculty made of clerics.
The new Metropolitan of Moscow was elected in the same month. The elections made a difference for the Academy due to the fact that the Metropolitan of Moscow was traditionally the patron of the school. According to the Theologian Herald it was the first Metropolitan in 600 years elected through free will clergy and people. It was Archbishop Tikhon of Vilno (Vilnius) Eparchy. According to the academic journal Vladyka was chosen because of “his progressive views and opinions he had expressed ever since he was a seminarian.”
The new academic year started with a lively introductory speech made by A. Tuberovsky. He used the words “renewal of the human race, prophet Habakkuk proclameth singing the ancient hymns…” as the main theme. The title of the lecture “Obnovlenie Chelovechestva” (Renewal of the Human Race) was taken from this verse, making an allusion to the contemporary events in Russia. In the beginning the lecturer emphasized that the fundamental purpose of Dogmatic Theology was in development of Orthodox worldview. Academy should not loose touch with the church doctrine; it needs to find its place in life and understand it. In general, “the life of humanity is a colorful kaleidoscope of various approaches to matter and spirit, it is an endless variety of degrees of individual strengths and freedoms – in the amplitude of Divine perfection and devil’s arbitrariness.” What is happening now in Russia is a link in a chain of historical events, “one of the staggering acts of the great drama of redemption that was predestined to the human race before the general resurrection…”
The first elections of the rector in its entire history occurred in September 1917. The new rector elect was Anatolii Petrovich Orlov, professor of History and Unmasking of Western Confessions; one month later he was ordained priest.
A paper of M. Bogoslovsky “Reforma vysshei dukhovnoi shkoly pri Aleksandre I i osnovanie Moskovskoi Dukhovnoi Akademii” (Reform of the Higher Theological Education During the Reign of Alexander I and Foundation of Moscow Theological Academy) was delivered at the annual event on October 1 (1917). This paper was a historical research and a response to the contemporary events. Metropolitan Tikhon of Moscow was present at the presentation.
The last remarkable event in the academic life in 1917 was the 50th anniversary of repose of Metropolitan Filaret, commemorated on November 18-19. Metropolitan Tikhon, the Patriarch elect and the participants of the All-Russian Church Council were at the presentation. “Mitropolit Filaret i ego otnoshenie k Moskovskoi Dukhovnoi Akademii” (Metropolitan Filaret and His Relationship with the Moscow Theological Academy) by rector Archpriest A. P. Orlov, “Mitropolit Filaret kak bogoslov” (Metropolitan Filaret as Theologian) by professor M. M. Tareev, “Mitropolit Filaret kak bibleist” (Metropolitan Filaret as a Biblical Scholar), and “K kharakteristike mitropolita Filareta” (Characterization of Metropolitan Filaret) by professor D. I. Vvedensky were some of the papers delivered at the event.
At the end of 1917 the Moscow Theological Academy was shut down. However, despite the war and political battles, there still remained a great number of people in Moscow, who desired to receive theological education. In the same year, Archbishop Feodor (Pozdeevsky), the former rector, made an attempt to start a Higher Theological School in Moscow. He gathered a group of his close associates from the former professors of the Moscow Academy. According to the memoirs of Bishop Veniamin (Milov), the inspector of the revived Moscow Academy in 1946 and a Hierodeacon in 1920, the school “found shelter in different places in the city: at the headquarters of the Eparchy, at the Church of St. John the Warrior, at the Church of the Monastery of St. Peter, and at the Church of the Life-giving Trinity in Listy. The faculty of the school remained the same.” Bishop Veniamin spoke highly of patrologist I. V. Popov and about Father Pavel Florensky as “excellent and often flawless experts in their fields” but he added, “Unfortunately the faculty, nonetheless, was under the influence of rationalism.”
A group of professors of the Academy under the leadership of Archpriest Anatolii Orlov also tried to preserve theological education. They held classes at the so-called Moscow People’s Home (Moskovskii narodnyi dom) on Likhov Pereulok Street. However, that school was unable to last very long. Thereafter, all attempts to preserve the Academy were in vain; theological education in Moscow had been abolished through 1944.
Opening of Theological Institute
Orthodox Theological Institute and Theological pastoral courses were opened on June 14, 1944 at the Novodevichii Monastery in Moscow. Those were the first educational institutions of the Russian Orthodox Church allowed under the Soviet regime. It became possible after the historic meeting of the hierarchs of the Russian Church remaining free with the Soviet leadership in Kremlin on September 4, 1943.
According to the agreement (with authorities), Archbishop Grigorii (Chukov) of Saratov came up with the idea of a theological institute and courses. Sergei Vasilevich Savinsky, Master of Theology, who would later become an Archpriest, rector of the Dormition Church at the Novodevichii Monastery, and the inspector and professor at the Moscow Theological Academy was appointed to oversee the institute and the courses. He had previously taught Dogmatics at the Chernigov Theological Seminary. He was assigned to teach the same subject at the new Theological Institute. He used the Dogmatic Theology of Metropolitan Mikhail (Bulgakov) as the basis for his teaching. According to Metropolitan Pitirim (Nechaev), who was a student in those years, “This was a theological system tested by many years and which he would not depart even an inch from, and it defined the methods of teaching and the content of Dogmatic Theology taught at the Theological Institute, and later at the Moscow Theological Academy and Seminary.”
In August of 1944, Synod appointed Archpriest Tikhon Dmitrievich Popov as rector of the Theological Institute, who had been recently received from the renovationist schism, where he had been a bishop. A graduate of the Kazan Theological Seminary, where in 1916 he defended a master’s thesis on Bishop Tikhon of Zadonsk, Father Tikhon taught Pastoral Theology at the Theological Institute.
Assembling the faculty was the most difficult problem. According to the original program it was planned to use the abridged curricula of the old academies with a focus on pastoral and practical aspects. One of the milestones was the transfer of the Dormition Trapeza Church of the Novodevichii Monastery for the needs of the Institute in 1945. Before that, the students attended Divine services at the Elokhovsky Cathedral.
Transformation of the Theological Institute to Academy
The Academic Committee at the Synod made a decision on August 26, 1946 to transform the Moscow Orthodox Theological Institute to Moscow Theological Academy with a four-year program of studies. The 3rd and the 4th years of the Institute became 1st and 2nd years of the Moscow Theological Academy, while the preparatory courses and the 1st and 2nd years of the Institute were made into a four-year program of the seminary. The Academy and Seminary were united in an administrative sense.
The former rector of the Theological Institute, Archpriest Tikhon Popov was appointed rector of the Moscow Theological Academy and Seminary. The entire faculty was supposed to be made up of 15 people. After the entrance exams in September 1946, there were 147 students at the Seminary, and 14 students at the Academy. The Academy funded a stipend for students (from 100 to 400 rubles a month) after the suggestion of Archpriest Nikolai Chepurin, who became a new rector.
Due to the shortage of teachers, the Patriarch petitioned at the Council for Religious Affairs to invite Russian professors of theology from abroad: Protopresbyter Georgii Shavelsky from Sofia, S. V. Troitsky from Belgrade, V. N. Lossky and N. A. Poltoratsky from Paris. This was supposed to make the faculty stronger and fill up all the vacant positions.
However, only S. V. Troitsky from that list was able to come. In 1947 he was appointed to teach Church Law. Due to problems in the relationships between Yugoslavia and the USSR in 1949 he had to leave his homeland once again.
A Board of Accreditations was organized in January 1947. Metropolitan Nikolai (Iarushevich) was appointed its chairman. The Board awarded academic titles to 13 teachers: Archpriests Tikhon Popov, Veniamin Platonov, and Dmitrii Bogoliubov as well as S. V. Savinsky and I. N. Shabatin as Professors of the Academy; Archimandrite Veniamin (Milov), Priest Aleksandr Vetelev, V. S. Vertogradov, N. P. Doktusov, N. I. Muraviev, A. V. Vedernikov and A. I. Georgievsky as Docents.
On November 29, 1947 the Council of the Ministers of the USSR transferred a number of buildings at the Trinity Sergius Lavra to the Moscow Patriarchate. Rector of the Academy, Bishop Germogen (Kozhin) was urged to move both theological schools to Lavra. The move was planned for the following year.
In 1948 the Moscow Theological Academy and Seminary moved to the Trinity Sergius Lavra. The renovated building of the Royal Chambers was used for classrooms and student dormitories. Before the reopening of the Church of the Protection, students and teachers attended evening services held in the assembly hall and went to the churches of the Lavra for the Devine Liturgy. In 1948 a Meeting of First Hierarchs and representatives of local Orthodox Churches was held in honor of the 500th anniversary of the Autocephaly of the Russian Church. The Moscow theological schools were presented at the celebrations as the center of Orthodox education, as well as the continuation and the development of scholarly theological traditions of the Russian Church. Professors and teachers of the Academy actively participated in the meeting. Docent N. I. Muravev presented a paper “Piatisotletnii iubilei avtokefalii sviatoi Russkoi Pravoslavnoi Tserkvi” (500th Jubilee of Autocephaly of the Holy Russian Orthodox Church). Archbishop Germogen, rector of the Academy delivered a report about the policy of the Vatican, V. S. Vertogradov delivered a paper about the hierarchy in the Anglican Church, and A. I. Georgievsky presented a paper on Church Calendar.
Under the leadership of M. A. Suslov, the Secretary of the Central Committee, the Soviet Government resumed active antireligious propaganda. However, Stalin’s position was different – he waited for an opportunity to take advantage of the Russian Orthodox Church as an instrument of his foreign policy. Even though the antireligious campaign stopped, the damage to the Church was already done: departments of Russian Religious Thought in all academies were shut down, Christian Psychology, History of Philosophy, and Christian Pedagogy were removed from the curricula. There were some losses among the faculty. Professor S. V. Troitsky (who had to leave to Yugoslavia), Docent A. V. Vedernikov, and V. A. Sretensky were fired from the Academy in 1948. Archimandrite Veniamin (Milov), inspector of the Academy was arrested on pre-war charges and sent to camps for the second time. Students Dmitrii Dudko and Piotr Bakhtin were arrested. Archbishop Germogen was transferred to Krasnodar, an Archpriest Aleksandr Pavlovich Smirnov, rector of the St. Nicholas Church in Kuznetsy (who previously taught the New Testament) was appointed new rector of the school. But even his tenure did not last long. A well-known Moscow cleric, Archpriest Vsevolod Shpiller, who had returned to Moscow from Bulgaria after WWII, performed the duties of inspector for some time while teaching a course in History and Analysis of Western Confessions was appointed the new rector.
Archpriest Konstantin Ruzhitsky, rector of St. Vladimir’s Cathedral in Kiev was appointed rector of the Academy in 1951. His appointment started a new period in the history of Moscow theological schools. It marked a change in generations of the faculty; the best post-war graduates were taking the place of the distinguished professors of pre-revolutionary school.
Hieromonk Sergii (Golubtsov), son of Aleksandr Petrovich Golubtsov, the pre-revolutionary professor of Church Archeology initiated a Laboratory of Church Archeology in 1951. Its collection of artifacts grew and expanded very quickly. In … Archpriest Aleskii Ostapov, godson of the Patriarch replaced Hieromonk Sergii at the Laboratory. Through the efforts of Father Aleksii and with active support of Patriarch Aleksii, as well as many other hierarchs and lay people, the Laboratory reached its peak and got to the point where it is now. His Holiness, Patriarch Aleksii (I) donated a number of precious icons, vestments and church artifacts to the new museum.
The consecration of the Academy’s church of the Protection of Mother of God was a memorable moment for both theological schools. The building, previously used as a Cultural Center (Dvorets Kultury), was transferred to the Academy in 1954 in very poor condition. Renovation took place from January through March 1955. In the middle of March, the church received a 17th century iconostas from the Museum of Donskoi Monastery (originally from the Church of St. Khariton the Confessor in Ogorodniki). The renovation was complete in a very short time: on May 21, 1955 Patriarch Aleksii I consecrated the church.
In the ten post-war years (1947-1957), the Academy trained a large number of clergy and teachers. By early 1960’s the entire faculty was made up of young professors. Archpriest K. Ruzhitsky, professors N. M. Lebedev, I. N. Shabatin and A. I. Georgievsky, Docent M. A. Starokadomsky and Archpriest I. Kozlov were the only senior members of the faculty remaining at the Academy. However, not all of them were able to have enough strength to remain faithful to the Church under the pressure of an atheistic ideology. The entire Academy was hurt when igumen Pavel (Petrov), one of the young professors renounced his monastic vows and rank, and left the Academy in November 1961. Father Pavel was a senior deputy of the inspector and had had a very good reputation. That is why it was so unexpected and why it shocked the faculty and students.
Meanwhile, the strengthening of the Church’s position in the society could not have passed without the attention of the Communist Party for long. The tone of the reports at the Politburo was becoming less tolerant with respect to the Orthodox Church. Finally, the state policy towards church drastically changed in the late 50’s. N. S. Khrushchev, the First Secretary of the Central Committee, saw the rebirth of Orthodoxy as a threat to construction of Communism. In October 1958, he launched a new antireligious campaign with a secret resolution of the Central Committee.
