Da Italiano a Inglese: The Language and Dynamics of Natalia Ginzburg General field: Arte/Letteratura Detailed field: Poesia e Prosa
Testo originale - Italiano When one first approaches the plays of Natalia Ginzburg in their original language, the first things one notices are the tone and the language she uses.
As a matter of fact, Natalia Ginzburg uses a type of Italian that is lacking dialectical influences, but which is also impossible to consider formal Italian.
What she uses is a type of Italian similar to formal standard Italian (usually considered ‘proper’ Italian), but one which retains all the tics and syntax of colloquial speech.
Contrary to the basic conventions of good Italian writing, Ginzburg employs a good amount of short sentences, repetitions, and even grammatical mishaps which are common in conversational Italian, but frowned upon in written Italian.
