If paintings, sculptures, works of art, antiques, antiquities or other valuable objects were stolen from your family by the Nazis, you have the right to demand their return or financial compensation.
The first step consists in determining what was stolen.
The second step is a search to find where these valuable objects are today.
The third step is the preparation of the evidence showing your family owned these items.
The fourth step is the negotiation with the current owner or if necessary legal action.

If you have no vintage photos showing what was stolen, we might be able to find out through the archives of Nazi records what was stolen from your family. Laureato in scienze biologiche inizia a studiare fotografia come autodidatta dedicandosi alla caccia fotografica in quanto appassionato di ornitologia. I lunghi tempi morti, dovuti all’appostamento sul campo, lo portano tuttavia all’osservazione di altri soggetti sempre in ambito naturale. La svolta è avvenuta alcuni anni fa a causa di un periodo di crisi dell’artista che lo ha spinto alla ricerca di un progetto artistico più soddisfacente e anche impegnativo. Partendo dalla condizione di apprendista, Massimo ha iniziato a sviluppare nuovi concetti utilizzando la macchina fotografica per catturare la figura umana. Inizialmente sotto forma di ritratto fino ai tempi attuali dove la specie umana non è direttamente rilevata ma comunque evidente.
Nel 2011 Massimo Motta ha esposto in due collettive a Milano, nel 2012 ha realizzato una personale, nello stesso anno, a Novembre ha esposto all’Art Fair a Daegu in Corea. Dal 2011 collabora in maniera continuativa con la galleria “arte Zara” di Milano, e dal 2012 coopera con Lab63 nella stessa città.
Light and Night
La fotografia di Massimo Motta è una donna che passeggia tra le vie del centro con un occhio attento, profondo e preciso scruta i passanti. Le immagini di questo artista ci portano in una condizione estremamente comune: quella della banalità. Usando un luminismo al contrario, fatto da una luce infuocata violenta che si schianta contro l’essere umano fino ad annullarlo, Massimo ci descrive un paese dei balocchi negativo ma reale. Le vetrine che mostrano manichini di plastica dai corpi perfetti e anonimi sembrano essere il vero soggetto. La luce artificiale esplode come i flash, cancellando ogni diversità e di conseguenza il valore aggiunto racchiuso in essa. La triade uomo-società-ambiente è così collocata al centro di questa ricerca artistica, fondamento della possibilità di conoscere l’essere umano e del suo agire. Arte e sociologia si fondono in queste opere, tanto da essere illustrazione visiva delle posizioni di Heidegger e di Gehlen: la cultura odierna sovrastruttura l’esperienza che l’uomo ha della realtà, fornendo informazioni pronte all’uso e stabilendo i confini dei media tecnologici . Massimo si è accorto come la nostra cultura del consumismo ci sta allontanando dall’esserci e dal suo fondamento, dal rapporto con l’altro e con l’ambiente vero. L’uomo uniformato dalle vetrine è determinato da un antropocentrismo che lo ha reso incapace di connettere tutte le conoscenze scientifiche e che lo ha reso schiavo delle informazioni di seconda mano.
L’artista con la sua fotografia innocente vi chiede di identificarvi nell’essere umano o nel manichino. In quell’attimo di scelta vi renderete conto che l’uomo in quelle istantanee è un’ombra che sfugge. L’unica cosa che ci rende vivi rispetto ai manichini è il mosso, il movimento, la dinamicità che ci ricorda al tempo stesso il nostro appartenere ad una “rete di vita”. Massimo Motta anticipa nelle immagini quello che la società con grande difficoltà sta cercando di acquisire: una visione ecocentrica.

Having obtained a BA in Life Sciences, he began studying photography by himself. Being fond of ornithology, he gave himself to photo hunting. Having plenty of idle times during his hides, he started to observe other natural subjects. The turning point took place a few years ago as a consequence of a crisis that pushed the artist to look for a more satisfactory and a more demanding project. Putting himself in the condition of an apprentice, Massimo started to develop new concepts using his camera to capture the human figure. At the beginning, the form was that of the portrait, while nowadays the human species is not directly detectable, but palpable, anyway.
Massimo Motta exhibited his works into two collective exhibitions in Milan, during 2011; he held a solo exhibition in 2012 and he took part to Daegu Art Fair (Korea) in November during the same year. Since 2011 he has been permanently collaborating with ‘Arte Zara’ Gallery in Milan. Since 2012 he has been likewise working with Lab63 in the same city.
Light and Night
Massimo Motta’s photography is a woman strolling about the town centre scrutinizing the passers-by with a watchful, deep and accurate eye. This artist’s images take us to a widely common condition – that of ordinariness. Massimo describes us a negative but real never never land using a reverse luminism - by means of a violent burning light that crashes against the human being till his annihilation.
Windows showing plastic dummies with their perfect and anonymous bodies seem to be the real subject. Artificial light bursts like a flash erasing each difference and its own peculiar added value with it. The man-society-environment triad is therefore put in the centre of this artistic research as the foundation of the possibility of getting to know the human being and his way of acting. Art and sociology melt in these works so as to be visual explanations of Heidegger and Gehlen’s positions – current culture superstructures the experience the man has of reality by supplying ready-made information and fixing the boundaries of technological media. Massimo realized that our consummeristic culture is separating ourselves from our being and from its foundation, from its relationship with others and with true environment.
The man, uniformed by shop-windows, is marked out by an anthropocentrism which made him to link all the scientific knowledge and which made him a slave of second-hand information.
By means of his innocent photography, the artist asks you to identify yourselves either in the human being or in the dummy. At the time of choosing, you will realise that man is an elusive shadow in those snap-shots. The only thing that makes us alive as opposed to the dummies is the blurred image; that movement and dynamism reminds us our belonging to a ‘life net’. Massimo Motta forestalls in his images what society is trying to acquire with great difficulty – an ecocentric vision.

Ogni tecnica espressiva ha le sue regole e le sue caratteristiche, ma ciò non significa che un mezzo come la macchina fotografica, che è stato realizzato per catturare immagini reali e consegnarle alla memoria, non possa essere usato anche per evocare dimensioni altre.
La fotografia è già astrazione, se ci pensiamo bene, poiché registra solo una porzione di mondo. La scelta dell'inquadratura e lo sguardo sul particolare, già creano una de-contestualizzazione di un singolo elemento spesso secondario che viene sottoposto così all'attenzione di chi guarda.
Ma la macchina fotografica consente anche di superare i limiti del reale per creare immagini più vicine a quelle della pittura. In questo caso, gli oggetti diventano i colori spremuti sulla tavolozza che consentono di dipingere su una superficie virtuale che è l'aria stessa.
La tentazione per un pittore è forte, perché i colori che interagiscono tra loro sono i colori puri e trasparenti della luce e danno vita a combinazioni e sfumature ben difficili da ottenere mescolando la materia pittorica. I miei lavori fotografici più informali non sono mai il risultato di elaborazioni con gli strumenti della grafica digitale. Mi permetto solo qualche correzione nel tono o nell'esposizione, per esaltare degli elementi non immediatamente percepibili, ma nient'altro. Nulla viene aggiunto o tolto, nessun effetto speciale viene utilizzato. E' un rapporto immediato quello che cerco, che mi aiuti a rivelare la dimensione della poesia che vive nel reale, ma che generalmente sfugge alla percezione.

PHOTOGRAPHY
Any technique of expression has its own rules and its characteristics, but this does not signify that a means such as the camera - which originally had been realized to capture real images to be converted into records - cannot be used to evoke different dimensions.
A photo is an abstraction, if we consider, as it records only a little portion of the world around. The choice of the shot and a glance sensible to particulars already create a de-contestualization of a single, often secondary, element which is so subdued to the viewer's attention.
The camera, morover, also allows to surpass the boundaries of reality to create images which are nearer to paintings. in this case, tho objects become the colours squeezed on the palette that allow to paint on a virtual surface which is the air itself.
The temptation for a painter is great as the interacting colours are the pure and transparent ones of light that give birth to combinations and shadings very difficult to obtain mixing together the painting hues. My more informal photographiyc works are never the result of digital graphics elaborations. I only allow myself to modest corrections in tone and exposition to exhalt those elements which are not immediately perceptible, but nothing else. Nothing is added or eliminated, no special effect is used. It is an immediate relationship, what I look for, that helps me reveil the poetic dimension which is in real life, but which generally escapes our perceptions.

Come Luce
La fotografia digitale di Silvia Casilli può rientrare tra i frammenti più singolari del cosiddetto informale lirico. L'informale, ricco di ramificazioni, è un portato del secolo scorso. L'artista (...) accetterebbe di dire che dal caos, dal magma, dal bitume che maneggia, prende forma l'universo.
D'all'antica Grecia, i vecchi saggi inorridirebbero: caos, materia, ciò che non ha forma curata, non sono elementi degni di annoverarsi fra le opere di cultura. Anche in seguito, le cose che ci circondano non hanno il primo posto nella considerazione dei sapienti.
Per molto tempo, in arte, le parziali rivalutazioni del reale operate, per fare alcuni esempi, dall'arte borghese fiamminga, dal realismo di Courbet, dagli impressionisti francesi, da Fattori e altri, non valgono come duraturo recupero in un contesto tutto proteso verso la smaterializzazione.
La fotografa e pittrice Silvia Casilli, pur restando radicata nell'informale del suo tempo, compie una importante ricerca che la impegna a vivere e riscoprire la natura nei suoi aspetti più selvaggi e tangibili.
L'artista resta come impregnata dai profumi dei boschi finlandesi, da erbe e fasci di diversi fiori locali; i loro colori acerbi, le magiche trasparenze e il chiarore baluginante fra i vaporosi mazzi si fondono e odorano di terra. Sembrano quadri fotografici freschi e ariosi, leggeri quale volo di uccelli, librati in aria e radicati nel suolo lucente grazie al sole di Finlandia. Ogni foto è scattata nel bosco oppure è poi definita in studio, ma senza alterazioni e ritocchi. E' una poetica vissuta come ponte - viaggio proteso tra noi e l'arte, dove gioia e bellezza leniscono il dolore ed è trasfigurata da una silenziosa profondità, ossia da una strana forza, un miscuglio potente di sogni ed espressiva tensione. L'opera si tocca, la fisicità le appartiene e la trasfigura. Silvia Casilli desidera imparare, migliorare la sua visione del mondo. Forse sembra poco, ma conoscendola si intuisce che è una esplosiva lezione di vita.

As Well as Light
Silvia Casilli's digital photography can be included among the most peculiar fragments of the so called lyrical abstract expressionism. The non-representational art - so rich in ramifications - is a product of the last century. The artist (...) would agree in saying that the universe arises from chaos, from magma, from the bitumen she manipulates.
Old Greek sages would be horrified. Chaos, base substance, what has no perfect form canno't be righteously numbered among the offsprings of culture.
For a long time, the real was only half revalued - as it is possible to infer from the numerous examples such as the middle-class Flemish art, from Courbet's realism, from French Impressionism, from the Italian Fattori, and so on. All these attempts did not achieve a durable recovery whereas everything continued to tend to dematerialization.
Even if Silvia Casilli - as a photographer and as a painter - continues to be deep-rooted in the non-representationalism of her time, she nevertheless carries on an important research which challenges her in living and rediscovering Nature it its most wild and palpable aspects.
The artist remains in some way soaked by the scents of the Finnish woods, by herbs and bounches of different local flowers. Their premature colors, the magic transparencies and the faint light blend and smell of soil flickering among the flimsy poises.
Her works look like fresh and airy photographic paintings. They are light as a flight of birds that hoover in the air and root in the glimmering soil thanks to the Finnish sun.
Each shot is taken directely in a wood or it is afterwards defined in studio, nevertheless without any modification or retouching.This is a poetics which is experienced as a bridge and as a trip stretched out between ourselves and art, where joy and beauty soothe pain which is transfigured by a silent deepness, by a weird power which is a mighty mixture of dreams and expressive tension. The artwork is palpable. Its consistency is part of it and transfigures it, at the same time. Silvia Casilli is eager to learn, eager to improve her view of the world. It might seem a little thing, but after having met her you can guess that it is an explosive life lesson.

Testo originale - Italiano Il mio invito è uno solo, ed è quello di sedere in silenzio davanti a queste immagini senza chiedere e senza escludere nulla. Opere come Leaf Skye e Fire and Snow sono così essenziali e così sottilmente chiare nel loro messaggio da suggerire non tanto una speranza su cui si potrebbe discutere tanto a lungo quanto inutilmente, quanto piuttosto un dato di fatto. La linea dell’orizzonte ci testimonia infatti una realtà precisa su cui tutti dobbiamo ragionare con estrema attenzione perché la verità è che sulla linea dell’orizzonte non c’è nulla. Ed è proprio in virtù del fatto che sulla linea dell’orizzonte non c’è nulla che l’uomo può e deve pensare al futuro e inventarselo da sé senza sperare inutilmente nell’aiuto altrui il che ci mette tutti nella condizione di far fronte ciascuno alle proprie precise responsabilità. Queste opere non vanno guardate ma ascoltate, perché quello che dicono è una cosa sola: “nessuno può al posto tuo. Solo tu puoi perché solo tu sai”.
Il messaggio arriva forte come un pugno nello stomaco e dolce come il bacio della buonanotte. Questa piccola grande donna ci costringe a pensare al futuro, e ci costringe a pensare al futuro nella misura in cui un’opera straordinaria come Lovers on the brim of day ci parla espressamente d’amore. L’uomo e la donna mirabilmente rappresentati come due foglie in volo possono levarsi da terra grazie all’amore e porsi così in un ambito di interazione fatto di luce, di nuvole, di vette, e di grandi spazi liberi e aperti. La relazione con la grande pittura di paesaggio della tradizione romantica europea è ben evidente, ed altrettanto lo sono gli aspetti di citazione della grande poesia inglese ottocentesca primo fra tutti Percy Shelley. Osservate perciò questi dipinti, perché ciò che vi restituiranno in termini di emozione e tutto ciò che vi diranno nel segreto del vostro cuore rimarrà vostro per sempre.

The skyline indeed attests a precise reality upon which we all have to think carefully - as the truth is that nothing is along the horizon. Exactly for this the Man has to think about future, and has to frame it on his own without uselessly hoping in someone’s else help. This means that we all have to face with our own precise responsibilities. These works require not to be seen, but to be listened to, because what they say is only one thing. “Nobody can in your behalf. Only you can, as only you know. ”
The message arrives strong as a punch in the stomach and sweet as the goodnight kiss. This little great woman compels us to think about future, and she causes us to think to the future in the way an extraordinary work as Lovers on the Brim of Day tells us openly about love. A man and a woman, impressively represented in the shape of two flying leaves, can rise from the ground thanks to love and place themselves in a sphere of interplay made of light, clouds, highs and of large free and open spaces. It is well evident the relationship with the major landscape painting of the European Romantic tradition so as it is evident the reference/quotation of the major English poetry of the eighteenth century –Percy B. Shelley, first of all. Therefore pay attention to these paintings, because what they will give you back in terms of emotion and all they will tell you in the secret of your hearts will be yours forever.

My specialization area is art. I am myself a visual artist. I taught English for Artistic Communication at L.A.B.A. Fine Arts Academy - Brescia (Italy) for several years. Here I also took part to the European Erasmus Project, arranging and taking care of relationships between our institute and some other foreigner ones.
I currently work as a didactic operator in the Museums of Brescia. Here I was entrusted in the creation of a three-levels English tour of the museum for students.
