You could face bone and joint injuries that include fractures, dislocations, and sprains.
Fractures
There are basically two types of fractures: open and closed. With an open (or compound) fracture, the bone protrudes through the skin and complicates the actual fracture with an open wound. After setting the fracture, treat the wound as any other open wound.
The closed fracture has no open wounds. Follow the guidelines for immobilization, and set and splint the fracture.
The signs and symptoms of a fracture are pain, tenderness, discoloration, swelling deformity, loss of function, and grating (a sound or feeling that occurs when broken bone ends rub together).
The dangers with a fracture are the severing or the compression of a nerve or blood vessel at the site of fracture. For this reason minimum manipulation should be done, and only very cautiously. If you notice the area below the break becoming numb, swollen, cool to the touch, or turning pale, and the victim shows signs of shock, a major vessel may have been severed. You must control this internal bleeding.
Rest the victim for shock, and replace lost fluids.
Often you must maintain traction during the splinting and healing process. You can effectively pull smaller bones such as the arm or lower leg by hand. You can create traction by wedging a hand or foot in the V-notch of a tree and pushing against the tree with the other extremity. You can then splint the break.
Very strong muscles hold a broken thighbone (femur) in place making it difficult to maintain traction during healing. You can make an improvised traction splint using natural material (Figure 4-6) as follows:
Get two forked branches or saplings at least 5 centimeters in diameter. Measure one from the
patient's armpit to 20 to 30 centimeters past his unbroken leg. Measure the other from the groin to
20 to 30 centimeters past the unbroken leg. Ensure that both extend an equal distance beyond the
end of the leg.
Pad the two splints. Notch the ends without forks and lash a 20- to 30-centimeter cross member
made from a 5-centimeter diameter branch between them.
Using available material (vines, cloth, rawhide), tie the splint around the upper portion of the body
and down the length of the broken leg. Follow the splinting guidelines.
With available material, fashion a wrap that will extend around the ankle, with the two free ends
tied to the cross member.
Place a 10- by 2.5-centimeter stick in the middle of the free ends of the ankle wrap between the
cross member and the foot. Using the stick, twist the material to make the traction easier.
Continue twisting until the broken leg is as long or slightly longer than the unbroken leg.
Lash the stick to maintain traction.
Note: Over time you may lose traction because the material weakened. Check the traction
periodically. If you must change or repair the splint, maintain the traction manually for a short time.

Il pericolo di una frattura è la rottura o compressione di un nervo o di un vaso sanguigno nella zona colpita. Per questo motivo bisogna cercare di non muovere il soggetto o farlo con moltissima cautela. Se si nota che l'area sotto la frattura diventa insensibile, gonfia, fredda o impallidisce, e la vittima mostra segni di shock, è molto probabile che una vena principale sia stata recisa. È necessario controllare queste emorragia interna. Sistemare la vittima per lo shock e sostituire i fluidi persi.
Spesso si deve mantenere la trazione mentre si fissano le stecche e per il processo di guarigione. Si possono tirare efficacemente le ossa più piccole come il braccio o la gamba semplicemente con le mani. È possibile creare una trazione di stazionamento bloccando una mano o un piede in un ramo a V e tirando l'altra estremità del corpo. È così possibile applicare le stecche. Muscoli molto sviluppati in presenza di un femore rotto rendono molto difficile mantenere la trazione durante il medicamento. È possibile improvvisare uno strumento di trazione utilizzando materiali naturali (Figura 4-6) come segue:
Prendete due rami o alberelli a forma di forcella di almeno 5 cm di diametro. Uno deve esser lungo dall'ascella a 20-30 cm oltre la lunghezza della gamba sana. L'altro deve misurare dall'inguine a 20- 30 cm oltre la gamba intatta. Assicurarsi che entrambi i legni si estendano per la stessa lunghezza al di là della fine della gamba.
Fissate le due stecche. Intaccate le estremità senza forche e incastrateci un rametto di 20- 30 cm di lunghezza e di 5 cm di diametro, da parte a parte.

Inserire un bastoncino di 10 cm (2,5 di diametro) in mezzo alle estremità libere, tra il piede e la traversa, e attorcigliate il filo alla traversa. Girando questo bastoncino sarà più facile fare trazione.
Continuate questa trazione finché la gamba rotta non sarà lunga o leggermente più lunga della gamba sana.
Incastrate il bastoncino per mantenere la trazione.
Nota: nel corso del tempo si rischia di perdere la trazione per colpa degli indebolimento del materiale. Controllate la trazione periodicamente. Se è necessario mortificate o riparate la stecca mantenendo la trazione manualmente per un breve periodo.

The crotalids, or pit vipers (Figure E-4), may be either slender or thick-bodied. Their heads are usually much wider than their necks. These snakes take their name from the deep pit located between the eye and the nostril. They are commonly brown with dark blotches, though some kinds are green.
Rattlesnakes, copperheads, cottonmouths, and several species of dangerous snakes from Central and South America, Asia, China, and India fall into the pit viper group. The pit is a highly sensitive organ capable of picking up the sligh test temperature variance. Most pit vipers are nocturnal. They hunt for food at night with the aid of these specialized pits that let them locate prey in total darkness. Rattlesnakes are the only pit vipers that possess a rattle at the tip of the tail.
India has about 12 species of these snakes. You find them in trees or on the ground in all types of terrain.
The tree snakes are slender; the ground snakes are heavy-bodied. All are dangerous.
China has a pit viper similar to the cottonmouth found in North America. You find it in the rocky areas
of the remote mountains of South China. It reaches a length of 1.4 meters but is not vicious unless
irritated. You can also find a small pit viper, about 45 centimeters long, on the plains of eastern China. It
is too small to be dangerous to a man wearing shoes.
There are about 27 species of rattlesnakes in the United States and Mexico. They vary in color and may
or may not have spots or blotches. Some are small while others, such as the diamondbacks, may grow to
2.5 meters long.
There are five kinds of rattlesnakes in Central and South America, but only the tropical rattlesnake is
widely distributed. The rattle on the tip of the tail is sufficient identification for a rattlesnake.
Most will try to escape without a fight when approached, but there is always a chance one will strike at a
passerby. They do not always give a warning; they may strike first and rattle afterwards or not at all.
The genus Trimeresurus is a subgroup of the crotalidae. These are Asian pit vipers. These pit vipers are normally tree-loving snakes with a few species living on the ground. They basically have the same characteristics of the crotalidae--slender build and very dangerous. Their bites usually are on the upper extremities--head, neck, and shoulders. Their venom is largely hemotoxic.

Il loro veleno è in gran parte emotossico.

Native Italian living in Costa Rica, I studied in Italy up to 17 years and I have successfully graduated in Cost Rica (2 years later), where I had to relearn all subjects in Spanish.
I always studied English and I recently did a translation of the FM 21-76 (u.s. army survival manual) of 500 pages. I write books as hobby (and probably i will publish them in future) and i really enjoy reading, including English or Spanish books.
Lot of experience from internet, games, movies, music, softwares, books, videos and others, and, of course, trought my own studies.
