Dominava allora il complesso monastico di San Vincenzo al Volturno che ricevette in dono la terra di Quinquemilia al limite della quale cominciò a sorgere un centro abitato che trasse il nome dal torrente Rasinus e fu, quindi, Rocca Rasini. Rocca Rasini compare però nei documenti solo alla fine del secolo Xl. Com'era il tenore di vita , la cultura degli abitanti di questa Rocca Rasini? Le Uniche notizie che abbiamo a disposizione riguardano l'organizzazione governativa che vigeva a Roccaraso e Pietransieri le cui popolazioni erano tenute a proteggere il capoluogo, che era Castel di Sangro, per ordine del Re Federico il quale gestiva l'amministrazione dei paesi di Quinquemilia. Cominciava a nascere il Comune del quale non ci sono tracce. Si stabilirano traffici con Firenze dove la lana (materia prima abruzzese) s'imponeva come prodotto commerciale. Il centro di raccolta delle lane era Sulmona. Di Roccaraso troviamo notizie più tarde, quando si trovava sotto la dominazione dei d'Avalos il paese era legato a Castel di Sandro dove risiedeva il Governatore. Ancora più tardi, e in pratica agli inizi dell'era moderna, ci sono dati precisi demografici ed economici. Intorno al settecento Roccaraso contava 300 abitanti con una economia fondata sull'industria armentizia . Nel Settecento, si presentava come un tranquillo borgo ricco d'armenti e di pascoli dove la convivenza era facile e l'ambiente adatto ad una vita serena. E' l'epoca della rinascita agricola e della fondazione dell'antichissima arte tessile che troverà in Castel di Sangro un'industria fiorente ed affermata su basi solide che dureranno due secoli. Una vita tranquilla, ordinata, permetterà la formazione di cospicui patrimoni familiari ed una consistenza finanziaria di numerose famiglie del paese. Agli albori del 1900,comincia lo sviluppo dell'industria turistica.Dopo il declino dell'arte tessile per effetto della concorrenza delle grandi industrie , Roccaraso investi'tutte le sue risorse nel turismo si cercava un sbocco all'esuberante offerta di lavoro locale, anche per frenare in il fenomeno dell'emigrazione. Cosi cominciarono a sorgere i primi alberghi tra i quali l'hotel Monte Majella. L'ospitalità si estese alle case private e così tra il 1900 ed il 1915 cominciò lo sviluppo turistico della zona. Roccaraso aveva il pregio della facilità di comunicazioni: la ferrovia arrivava fino al centro del paese, facilitando cosi' l'afflusso di turisti e bagagli, inoltre, la statale rendeva la sosta quasi obbligata. La corrente turistica, infine, proveniva quasi tutta da Napoli, (solo 140 km). In quell'epoca Roma era poco collegata ed i romani preferivano la meta più vicina di Tagliacozzo. Il turismo quindi era del tutto napoletano, tanto da meridionalizzare i costumi e perfino la lingua, com'era accaduto a Castel di Sangro. L'avvento della prima guerra mondiale, non lasciò gravissime conseguenze. Al contrario la seconda guerra mondiale segnò una data importantissima nella storia di questa cittadina. Nel 1943 ci fu la distruzione del 98% del paese radendolo completamente al suolo. I primi anni della guerra erano passati lasciando indenne Roccaraso. A mano a mano che l'offensiva nemica si accentuava contro la città di Roma, Napoli, Bari i turisti si stabilirono a Roccaraso, cosi che la stagione estiva del '43 si prolungò inverosimilmente. Sembrava una situazione passeggera ma non fu così Chi avrebbe potuto mai immaginare che i tedeschi, si sarebbero stabiliti proprio a Roccaraso? Le forze tedesche si rafforzarono e poi di colpo, ci fu il bombardamento degli alleati, la pineta fu distrutta, alberghi e case furono bombardati. I tedeschi incendiarono e distrussero la frazione di Pietransieri ci furono 127 vittime, Roccaraso per la sua posizione strategica, fu la più colpita tra i centri dell'Alto piano Il tragico epilogo si concluse con la perdita dell antico teatro costruito nel 1698. I roccolani non si sono mai arresi, hanno ricostruito la loro città oggi attrezzatissima per accogliere turisti in tutte le stagioni, soprattutto in quella invernale. Roccaraso’s origins date back to around the year 1,000.
At that time the San Vincenzo al Volturno Monastery dominated the area. The monastery received the ‘Cinquemilia’ (Fivemiles) land as a gift and soon after a town originated that took its name from the river Rasinus. Thus the name Rocca Rasini. Rocca Rasini however only appears in official documents at the end of the XI century.
What was the standard of living and the culture of the inhabitants of the Rasini fortress? The only information we have available to us regards the government organization that prevailed in Roccaraso and Pietransieri. The population of these two towns was expected to protect the capital, which was Castel di Sangro, by order of King Frederick who ran the administration of the Cinquemilia towns. Around this time the municipality began to grow but there are no specific traces.
Trading with Florence was established. Wool, which was the predominant raw material, was the main commercial product. The town of Sulmona was the collection point for all the wool.
We begin to find news of Roccaraso later, when the town was under the d’Avalos domination; it was linked to Castel di Sangro where the Governor resided. Later on, at the beginning of the modern era, we can find specific demographic and economic data.
In the 1700’s Roccaraso had a population of 300 inhabitants and the economy was based on the herding industry. In the 18th century it presented itself as a peaceful town. It was rich with cattle and pastures. Cohabitation amongst the townsfolk was easygoing and the living environment was ideal for a peaceful life. This period is considered the era of agricultural rebirth and the founding of the ancient textile art. This thriving industry, based on solid foundations, with Castel di Sangro as its main reference point, lasted for two centuries. During this period a tranquil and orderly way of living enabled the town’s families to obtain significant wealth.
In the early 1900s the tourist industry began to develop. As a result of the decline of the textile art, due to competition from large companies, Roccaraso invests all its resources in tourism as a means of creating work to offset the exuberant local labor supply and to slow down the emigration phenomenon. Thus the first hotels began to be built, amongst which is the Hotel Monte Majella.
Hospitality was offered by private homes as well and as a result, between 1900 and 1915, tourism began to develop in the area.
Roccaraso had the advantage of being easily accessible: the railway reached the center of the town, thus facilitating the influx of tourists and people on the state road stopped at Roccaraso using the town as a rest area. Tourists came mainly from Naples (distant only 140 km). At that time there was no communication with Rome and as a result the Romans preferred to travel to Tagliacozzo for their holidays because it was closer. Practically all tourists were therefore Neapolitan, to the point where they managed to change local customs, and even the language, as had happened in Castel di Sangro.
The advent of the First World War did not create any serious consequences. However the Second World War marked an important date in the history of this town. In 1943 98% of the town was completely destroyed. The first few years of the war went by leaving Roccaraso unscathed. As the enemy offensive got closer and closer to the cities of Rome, Naples and Bari tourists settled in Roccaraso, to the point where the summer of 43 seemed to last forever. Who could have imagined however that the Germans would settle right in Roccaraso? The German forces strengthened their position when suddenly the allies began bombing. The forest was destroyed and houses and hotels were bombarded. The Germans set fire and destroyed the town of Pietransieri. 127 people died and Roccaraso, due to its strategic position in the highland, was hit the worst. The epilogue of this tragic event resulted in the total destruction of the ancient theatre built on 1698. The Roccolani (Roccaraso citizens) however never lost hope and have rebuilt their town which is now well equipped to accommodate tourists in all seasons, particularly in the winter.
