How do we guarantee that we receive payment for our work? When connections, communications, etc take place online, how do we know the potential client will actually pay? This concern has limited my willingness to take on new clients who are not directly referred to me. Thanks!

Does translating random stuff on your own work? The aim is submitting your final product to an agency or publishing house.

Which is better at the beginning-to go for broadly based skills for marketability or for specialization. I am an American lawyer who has worked in Japan for 25 years.

Hello Emilia,
Well in my presentation I talk a little bit about this both options, however the best way to start working in-house is to keep updated on offers in your country for translator/PM positions available and apply. Also you can try to apply for translation internships (paid or not) and work your way up in that company. Show your value, get insights and experience.
To work as a freelance is in a way easier, since you can do it whenever you want, you create a profile, such as in Proz and you start apply for work, you know you'll get a lot of no feedbacks and many times free sample tests that never get you any work....but one day the first client comes and then the second and then the third and you are settle.
Hope this helps.
PS: as a freelance translator you have to handle everything from work to finances, please check your country regulations on that before beginning accepting work

Hi Ann, There is no right or wrong way to start doing that, to start promoting yourself, I would advise you to check what clients you are targeting and based on that create the profile that fits best. A great way to boost your ranking/profile as a translator is to keep improving your qualities, attend workshops and meetings, talk to colleagues, etc.
