JaneTranslates Portorico Local time: 01:31 Da Spagnolo a Inglese + ... So, some people didn't get the email? | Jan 15, 2009 |
I checked out this forum because I received an email today about the software. Did everyone on ProZ get it (and Amy, apparently wisely, ignored it)? Or am I part of a select(!) group?

The email came from an "Advertizing Partner" of Proz. I don't think I ever signed up to receive such emails, nor do I remember asking for them to be blocked.
I wonder how they decide which ProZ addresses to send each ad to? I'm not sure if I've ever gotten one before.
Seems I am in the group, too :))) | Jan 15, 2009 |
I got the mail, but as the first feature advertised with the SW was "Advanced Grammar Checker", the mail landed in the bin immediately.

Regarding the WhiteSmoke marketing communication. These messages (advertising messages from select approved translation industry partners sent by proz.com on their behalf (your email is never given out)) are delivered only to those community members that have been opted in to receive these messages via the appropriate box in profile preferences.
To amend this a community member can go to their profile > settings > email preferences > other notifications and then select or de-select "Check this box if you would like to receive special offers and communications from ProZ.com on behalf of select, approved translation industry advertisers." You may also visit http://www.proz.com/remove to update this information quickly and easily - this link is also included in the footer of all messages that are delivered via this system.
We did auto opt-in community members in November 2007 when we launched the program. Users among this group received an email informing them of this change along with links to the areas to opt out. There was a period of time when new community members were not being opted in to this service and that is likely why some did not receive the messages. If you wish to receive messages like this simply select this option in your profile. We strive to deliver messages to the right user segment and not deliver to anyone that has opted out of this service. We only permit this service to be used by reputable, translation industry advertisers – that is you will never receive questionable materials, products outside the translation industry or outright spam. We wish to provide our community members with relevant appropriate messages without over-delivering. If this has not been the case please let me know at [email protected]
Thank you

Lia Fail (X) Spagna Local time: 06:31 Da Spagnolo a Inglese + ... not worth it | Jan 15, 2009 |
I agree with Natalie.
I considered it at least twice but after studying it, decided it wasn't going to be of much more help than Word's spell and grammar checkers.
It may be useful for non-native speakers who want to improve writing emails to clients and so on, but I wouldn't recommend it as a professional tool.
It doesn't strike me as a translator's tool, yet another general dictionary...mmm
JaneTranslates Portorico Local time: 01:31 Da Spagnolo a Inglese + ... Thank you, Drew. | Jan 16, 2009 |
Thank you for the info, Drew.
I have decided NOT to opt out. If ProZ can raise revenue based on the number of members subscribed to the ads, then they don't have to raise membership fees or bombard us with more on-site advertising.
As long as the emails are this infrequent, I'm in. Not promising I'm going to buy anything, though!
