2014 started off with a bang at the Golden Globes. It was a triumphant moment that heralded the promise of an exciting new year. The maverick actor, Johnny Depp, took to the stage and announced the most important award of the evening: best film. And the winner was 12 Years a Slave, British director Steve McQueen’s luminous rendition of American cruelty, tragedy, hope and triumph. Joining McQueen onstage was one of the most diverse and talented groups of actors the industry has seen in recent years: Chiwitel Ejiofor and Michael Fassbender, Sarah Paulson and Lupita Nyon’go. The director was clearly the visionary, Steve McQueen works not only in film, but his visual work is collected in galleries and museums around the world. But talent without opportunity is like the proverbial tree falling in the forest: if it makes a sound, no one hears it. It was telling that onstage, McQueen thanked Brad Pitt, whose role as a producer, gave the film the push it needed to get made. There have always been talented black artists, but they have not always had the chance to show the breadth and range of their talent and that’s what makes this moment so special. As Nina Simone sang so prophetically in 1969:
In the whole world you know
There are billion boys and girls
Who are young, gifted and black,
And that's a fact!
Young, gifted and black
We must begin to tell our young
There's a world waiting for you
This is a quest that's just begun.
It’s been a landmark year for black artists across the board. On television, Kerry Washington has wowed the nation in Scandal. She is beautiful, yes, but she is also brilliant, brainy and powerful. It is the kind of role that black actresses have dreamed of for generations. In 1939, Hattie McDaniel became the first black actress to win an Academy Award for her role as the eye-rolling (“I don’t know nothing about birthing babies”) maid in the Southern gothic classic film, Gone with the Wind. She proudly declared, “I’d rather make $700 a week playing a maid, than $7 a week being one.” Today’s black actress need not feel like her choices are so limited. On TV and on film, more and more stories are being told and this is due, in no small part, to the fact that there are more and more black women behind the screen: directors like Ava Duvernay and writers like Shonda Rhimes, creator of both Scandal and Grey’s Anatomy and Mara Brock Akil, creator of Girlfriends, a show that has been syndicated around the world, and the new sexy comedy, Being Mary Jane.
As Janet Jackson so emphatically proclaimed way back when, control is key when one aims to do what hasn’t been done before. Few artists today exhibit the control and the “can’t look away” magnetism of Rihanna. Be it on or offstage, she refuses to follow the status quo. In the 1970’s, a seminal text of the punk movement in Britain was Isidore Isou’s, Manifestes du Soulevement de la Jeunesse, from her fashion to her music to the rebel yell map of tattoos that adorn her gorgeous body, Rihanna seems to be writing her own manifest of a young woman uprising. One of her tattoos reads, “Never a failure, always a lesson.” Is it any wonder that we can’t stop listening to this wild and wise wonder girl?
In music, what is so exciting is how 21st century artists are breaking out of the categories that were defined by radio and the old constraints of the music business. Jay-Z is no longer seen as a “rapper,” he is an artist, a creative Renaissance man and a mogul, whose work is as likely to reference Andy Warhol and Jean Michel Basquiat as it is to reference Biggie Smalls or the Marcy projects where he grew up. When his wife, Beyonce, released her 32 track visual album, Katy Perry tweeted that “Beyonce broke the internet.” The surprise release of Beyonce’s album showcased a woman who was growing in musical maturity with a vision of how a married woman can still fully and completely own her sexuality. On one of the album’s standout tracks, “Flawless,” Beyonce samples a TedX speech of the celebrated British-Nigerian author, Chimamanda Ngozi:
We teach girls to shrink themselves, to make themselves smaller
We say to girls: "You can have ambition, but not too much
You should aim to be successful, but not too successful
Otherwise, you will threaten the man"
Because I am female, I am expected to aspire to marriage
I am expected to make my life choices
Always keeping in mind that marriage is most important
Now, marriage can be a source of joy and love and mutual support
But why do we teach girls to aspire to marriage
And we don't teach boys the same?
We raise girls to see each other as competitors
Not for jobs or for accomplishments, which I think can be a good thing
But for the attention of men
We teach girls that they cannot be sexual beings in the way that boys are
Feminist: a person who believes in the social
Political, and economic equality of the sexes
It is the kind of reference that one might expect in a speech from Hillary Clinton, not a song from Beyonce. But by including such an intellectual, political text in a popular song, Beyonce shows us that as she sings, “I’m more than [Jay Z’s] little wife” and she has created a dialogue that engages American girls and women of all ages and all colors.
What is so exciting about this generation of black artists is that they live and breathe creative freedom in the fullest sense. As any fan of Downton Abbey knows, being part of the landed gentry isn’t as fun as it’s made out to be. You’re tied to the past, bound to tradition, leashed – both literally and metaphorically – to the land. There was a time when people thought that being black meant one was less than. But to be young, gifted and black – as Nina Simone knew in 1969 and artists like Rihanna, Pharrell and Beyonce know today – is to be free. When the rules weren’t written with you in mind, you worry less about breaking them. Lorraine Hansberry, the great American playwright famously wrote that “to create the universal, you must pay very close attention to the specific.” By being true to their cultural roots, at the same time, branching out in every direction, today’s black artists are creating universal stories that are delighting, educating and entertaining not only the American audience, but the entire world.

Come sa qualunque fan di Downton Abbey, fare parte dell’aristocrazia terriera non è facile come si vorrebbe far credere. Sei legato al passato, vincolato alla tradizione, la terra ti tiene, letteralmente e metaforicamente, al guinzaglio. C’è stato un tempo in cui la gente pensava che essere nero volesse dire essere “meno di”. Ma essere giovani, talentuosi e neri, come sapeva Nina Simone nel 1969 e come artisti quali Rihanna, Pharrell e Beyoncé sanno oggi, vuol dire essere liberi. Quando le regole sono state scritte senza tenerti in considerazione, ti preoccupi meno di infrangerle. La grande drammaturga americana Lorraine Hansberry ha notoriamente scritto che “per creare l’universale, devi considerare molto da vicino lo specifico.” Restando fedeli alle proprie radici culturali e nello stesso tempo espandendosi in tutte le direzioni, gli artisti neri di oggi creano storie universali che deliziano, istruiscono e divertono non solo il pubblico americano, ma il mondo intero.

Août 1944, libération de Limoges. Izraëlis Bidermanas quitte
Ambazac où il s’est réfugié pendant l’Occupation et rejoint les
FFI à Limoges. Cantonné au standard téléphonique de la
caserne Beaupuy, il assiste à l’arrivée des résistants après des
mois de clandestinité et, impressionné, décide de faire leur
portrait. Avec les moyens du bord – un appareil 9 x 12 cm, un
papier blanc collé au mur, une fenêtre pour toute lumière –, il
photographie environ soixante-dix maquisards tels qu’ils lui sont
apparus, regards déterminés ou fiévreux, mal rasés dans leurs
« uniformes » de fortune. En refusant toute pose artistique, tout
éclairage sophistiqué, toute retouche, et en privilégiant
l’authenticité d’une prise de vue « brute », le photographe se
libère des conventions apprises durant ses années
d’apprentissage et d’artisanat où la première règle était de
plaire aux clients. Exposés dès cette année-là à Limoges, ces
témoignages historiques sont aujourd’hui considérés comme des
oeuvres d’art. Cette série « fondatrice » marque la naissance
d’Izis artiste.

British artist Nicky Hirst has been commissioned following an invited competition, to create a permanent Public Artwork in the form of a site-specific bronze balustrade for the new Bulgari Hotel & Residences, London in Knightsbridge.
The commissioned Public Art balustrade, entitled “A to Z”, measuring approximately 1m high and 14m long, is composed of a continuous organic design spanning 7 panels forming a network of smooth, varying apertures, surrounded by a thin branch-like framework. Cast in bronze with a dark brown patina, the balustrade Public Artwork is integrated as part of the restaurant terrace lining Knightsbridge Green. As well as complementing the Hotel’s architectural features through its material and timeless elegance, the artwork can be enjoyed by both: Hotel guests delighting in the al fresco dining enveloped by the balustrade as though by an ageless organic hedge, as well as by passers by strolling through this quaint passage to the rhythmic beat of present-day Knightsbridge, that continues to be permeated with a historic Victorian charm.
Through her design, Nicky Hirst renders the balustrade Public Artwork truly site-specific by paying homage to the journey through Knightsbridge Green and marking its significance in linking the busy Brompton Road and Knightsbridge streets to the tranquility and greenery of Hyde Park. The artist wished to create a conceptual and sensory expression of the seamless fusion between the natural and urban cityscape that characterizes the Hotel’s location in Knightsbridge. This resulted in a pattern design for the balustrade panels that visually unites a Leaf and a Map: merging an abstraction of the macro (aerial view of an A-Z map) and micro (cellular structure of a leaf).
In her proposal statement, Nicky Hirst shed further light into her inspiration for the work’s underlining concept and design:
“ In naturers patterns, branching vascular networks can be found in rivers, plants, terrain and living things. Net veined or reticulated patterns on leaves are like the passageways… In the vein networks of leaves and plants the reconnection between two branches in a vascular system means that there is more than one possible route in getting from one point to another - like a map. It is a form with a purpose, an example of designer-less design”.
In contrast, a map is a graphic representation or scale model of spatial concepts. It is an approximation, a symbolic depiction for conveying geographic information. Maps are a universal medium for communication, easily understood and appreciated by most people, regardless of language or culture. Most Londoners and visitors to London will be familiar with the ubiquitous A to Z map.
The resulting balustrade is a re-scaled amalgam of the two, a simple elegant design that can be read from both inside and outside.”
The balustrade will create a new engaging rhythmic experience for those walking through Knightsbridge Green or seated outside: As lighting from the Hotel in the evenings or natural sunlight permeates through the lace-like apertures of the balustrade, casting shadows onto the paving, imaginations will glide from impressions of being veiled beneath a canopy of leafy trees, to strolling over the fast changing demography of a buzzing city.
An artist who addresses a great deal of importance to the intrinsic and sensory quality of materials and to elaborate hand crafted techniques, Nicky Hirst’s bronze balustrade will have an invitingly tactile quality that would feel unnervingly like the texture of a real twig or tree branch. Nicky Hirst achieved this special trait by choosing to work with acclaimed award-winning British furniture designer Andrew Tye, to translate her collage concept patterns for each of the panels into meticulously and intricately carved life-size wooden templates before being cast into bronze by equally highly renowned foundry, AB Fine Art in London. The basis of Hirst’s design in wood and its inspirational links to the world of nature is equally compatible in echoing Prime Development Ltd’s strong environmental ethos in the construction of the Hotel.
The attention to quality hand-craftsmanship, fine detail, sumptuous jewel-like bronze patina, timeless design and simple elegance embodied by the artwork reflects the values and aura of the Bulgari Hotel & Residences, London.
A highly experienced artist, who has realized numerous architectural interventions and commissions in the Public Realm throughout the UK, this marks Nicky Hirst’s first permanent public commission in bronze.

Nicky Hirst’s minimal, poetic and elegant installations take the form of site-specific interventions that enhance awareness of the idiosyncrasies of a given space or context – in terms of its formal qualities as well as it’s history, usage, political, emotional and social dynamic. Through subtle yet well researched interventions she unveils connections and metaphors, triggers dialogue and invites personal human interaction vis-a-vis each work.
Nicky Hirst was born in Nottingham in 1963 and now lives and works in London. After studying Fine Art followed by Art and Architecture, she has pursued a parallel practice within her own studio and working collaboratively with architects. Hirst’s output is multifarious, including drawing, sculpture, etched glass, collage, printed text and photography. While avoiding simple categorisation, Hirst’s art is always characterised by a measured stance and sensitivity towards materials that has been present since she graduated in the mid 1980s. She has created many projects for the public realm and has contributed sculptures, drawings and installations to many group and solo exhibitions in galleries around the UK. Her work has been acquired by a number of public and private collections including the Saatchi Collection, Clifford Chance, Arthur Andersen, Arts Council Collection and Sheffield City Art Galleries.

Nicky Hirst è nata a Nottingham nel 1963; vive e lavora a Londra.
