Testo originale - Italiano
A Capriccio of a Dominican preaching to the Emperor Charles V, King Philip II of Spain, a Pope and their brilliantly attired entourages»).
Traduzione - Inglese
When it appeared for sale in London last April with the mistaken but understandable attribution to Hieronymus Francken the Elder , the painting was presented with a title that interpreted the subject with a moralizing theme. Emphasis was placed on the imaginary and symbolic nature of the event being portrayed, the preaching of a Dominican friar to the holders of worldly power: the emperor, the king, the pope and their courtly entourage (“Vanitas. A Capriccio of a Dominican preaching to the Emperor Charles V, King Philip II of Spain, a Pope and their brilliantly attired entourages”). Leaving aside for the moment the legitimacy of this interpretation, it is entirely understandable, given the vividness and power of historical evocation conveyed by the portrayal, that the strangeness of the iconography has marked – as we shall see below – the history and destiny of the painting.
