Testo originale - Italiano Le verdi colline della Sabina nascondono uno dei tesori naturalistici del reatino: le Gole del Farfa. A soli 60 km da Roma nel territorio del comune di Mompeo, il Farfa ha disegnato nei secoli un paesaggio unico. La paziente opera dell’uomo ha arricchito questi luoghi sorprendentemente selvaggi di testimonianze preziose. Sui terreni gestiti dalla nostra azienda agricola abbiamo realizzato una rete di percorsi archeologico-naturalistici che consente di apprezzare questa straordinaria combinazione.
Le Gole sono lunghe circa 2.5 Km e si sviluppano in direzione ovest lungo il lato sud del ripido monte su cui sorge il paese medioevale di Mompeo. La collocazione delle gole tra i contrafforti dei Monti Sabini e l’ambiente collinare ha determinato un mosaico di habitat di grande interesse. Habitat naturali che si sono evoluti in maniera indipendente dall’azione dell’uomo si trovano in stretta contiguità con ambiti ecologici semi- naturali caratterizzati da coltivazioni tradizionali.
Sul versante sud della collina in prossimità del fiume Farfa si trova il ponte che collegava Mompeo a Castelnuovo di Farfa in epoca medioevale. Poco a monte, sono visibili i ruderi del mulino ad acqua Naro-Patrizi. Citato dalle fonti dell’abbazia di Farfa a partire dal IX secolo, il mulino era utilizzato per la produzione di olio e farina. Si tratta di un opificio idraulico di notevoli dimensioni che si articola in tre ambienti e numerose opere di adduzione e scarico delle acque. In direzione della confluenza tra il Farfa e il torrente Montenero si incontrano i resti dell’acquedotto che serviva il mulino.
Gli olivi di questa zona si trovano su terreni marginali, per lo più in aree a forte pendenza e presentano caratteristiche paesaggistiche e botaniche di notevole importanza. Le componenti territoriali (morfologia, suolo, vegetazione, clima, ecc.) e la produzione agricola si sono evolute insieme realizzando, attraverso una radicata cura del territorio ed una cultura materiale fortemente caratterizzata, uno specifico contesto paesaggistico. L’interesse botanico di questi oliveti è rappresentato dall’ampia diversità genetica. Si tratta spesso di varietà tipiche della Sabina se non addirittura di ecotipi locali. Alcuni degli uliveti, che si incontrano lungo il percorso sono arricchiti dalla presenza di piante plurisecolari risalenti probabilmente ad impianti di epoca romana.
I toponimi, le numerose iscrizioni e le lapidi trovate nel territorio documentano l’uso della zona da parte del patriziato romano che qui ha costruito numerose ville rustiche. Per raggiungerle, i romani avevano costituito una rete stradale di cui ancora oggi è identificabile il tracciato. Di particolare interesse è il sentiero delle Coste, un percorso quasi pianeggiante tagliato nella roccia calcarea del versante sud della collina di Mompeo. Dal sentiero si gode uno straordinario panorama sulle Gole del Farfa. Sul versante ovest della collina di Mompeo, in località Monte, giacciono i ruderi di un’imponente villa rustica. L’ampio sistema di criptoportici conserva ancora alcuni ambienti dedicati alla lavorazione dell’olio.

Over the centuries, as humans painstakingly added their labors to nature’s, significant historical artifacts have enriched this surprisingly wild environment. We invite you to join us in exploring this extraordinary combination of archeological and natural beauty, as you travel the extensive network of trails we maintain.
During the Farfa River’s 2.5 km-path through the gorges, it travels westward below the south side of the steeply perched medieval hilltop village of Mompeo. Situated between the Sabine Mountains and the lower hills, the gorge features a fascinating and varied ecosystem in which untouched natural habitats coexist side-by-side with traditionally cultivated croplands.
At the southern foot of the hill of Mompeo, spanning the Farfa River is a medieval-era bridge that once connected Mompeo to Castelnuovo di Farfa. A little further upstream are the old ruins of the Naro-Patrizi Watermill. According to historical documents from the Farfa Abbey, the mill was used to process oil and flour beginning in the ninth century AD. This considerably large watermill was divided into three rooms and featured a complex water distribution system. Near the junction of the Farfa River and the Montenero Tributary are remnants of the aqueduct that supplied water to the mill.
The olive trees in this area inhabit less-than- prime agricultural real estate, often on arduously steep slopes, and are imbued with both visual allure and botanical heft. They are emblematic of the traditional agricultural landscape of Sabina, where farming methods developed hand in hand with the evolving geology, soil, vegetation, and climate, resulting in a deeply-rooted bond with nature and a landscape of unrivaled beauty. What is also unique about these olive orchards is their genetic diversity. Not only do they include typical Sabine varieties, some are ecotypes found only in the vicinity. Olive groves along the trails contain trees believed to date back to Roman times.
The place-names, numerous Latin inscriptions, and memorial tablets found in this area document the presence of numerous agrarian estates built by Roman aristocrats. To reach their estates, the Romans constructed a network of roads whose traces we can still see today. One such remnant is the suggestive Coste Path, a nearly flat trail cut into the chalky rock on the south side of the hill of Mompeo. From it, hikers are treated to a breathtaking panoramic view of the Farfa Gorge. On the western slope below Mompeo, in the Monte area, lie the ruins of an imposing agrarian villa. A veritable cryptoporticus, it features a vast system of underground rooms where visitors can see how oil was extracted and stored in Roman times.
