Lélek can also mean (there wasn't a soul in the village) person.

Sorry, I can't say anything more intelligent than that, but to give students on average only 4 years 'go' at a language (largely English, German or French), is (and has been) a deplorable
My feeling is that the translator took on the job in good faith, but got stuck half way through, or the computer let him/her down and was too scared to report the failure.
