I have been working full-time for over 40 years and what I can say is that work runs in cycles, some days I have no work at all and then in others I work 10/12 hours (or even more...).

It should be 8, but in practice I always end up working more than scheduled.

I said more or less the same:

A more precise answer would be as long as it takes... Let's say that some weeks I can clock around 80+ hours and others no more than 10 hours! I've never done the maths...

Usually I work some six hours a day (and night sometimes), but not at one go.

One average for one person will not work for others.

An average doesn't exist. My working hours vary greatly. I only know that after 14 hours (with only a couple of 10-minutes' breaks now and then) my mind turns blank.

...while trying to earn as much as possible during this period.

I answered 6-8 hours for the sake of stats, but I may spend 2-3 hours more in front of the screen basically wasting my time in casual websurfing or remotely work-related reading.
Before the Internet, I also used to waste time while looking for a word in a dictionary, ending up skimming through pages and reading definitions whenever something caught my attention.

My good friend Julian: you'll feel right at home watching the fabulously tender and funny French movie Populaire in which the heroine (Rose Pamphyle) writes superfast on her typewriter with just two fingers.

The law of the least effort Aug 12, 2016

Percocet is putting me on a great mood these days (I had hip surgery —scary!). I'll say that calculating an average of any activity, especially an economic activity, has to pursue a practical goal. Example: if I work 6 hours at 14 € per hour on average five days a week, 50 weeks a year, I'll be making 21,000 €/year. Whether that's enough for my living expenses or not, I'll use that as the fulcrum to increase or decrease my working hours per day on average.

It's a known factoid that Americans are among the least inclined to take long vacations, even if they have four weeks available per year. In the IT and software development sectors (with which I'm pretty familiar), pulling a 70-90-hour/workweek isn't uncommon.

So, again, calculating an average of anything has to pursue a practical goal. Since my goals don't involve calculating averages, you can guess what my answer would be to this poll.

I chose between 4-6 hours but honestly it varies. Sometimes I only work a couple of hours and other days I work like 8 hours on a rush project.
