"On time" Apr 27, 2012

yes, but considering that here in Italy 60 and even 90 days is considered the correct "on time" term of payment ....

Some pay early.
Some pay on time.
Some need a nudge....or two.

Well... Apr 27, 2012

"On time" isn't defined here, but assuming that's reasonable (as per purchase order/other agreement/30 days, etc.) and setting 50% as a threshold for "most", if your answer is "no", I would suggest finding new clients...

The basic rule Apr 27, 2012

The basic rule in Europe is that unless there is agreement to the contrary, payment has to be made within 30 days of receiving the invoice.

I have had people pay me directly upon receipt of invoice but they are further and fewer than the Jumblies! And they are Swiss not French!

http://www.poets.org/viewmedia.php/prmMID/15476

It is highly common in France for invoices to be paid at 30 days from the end of the month in which the invoice is received. Example :

You invoice work done in January, the client receives the invoice in February. He counts 30 days from the end of the month of February and pays you in March. Finally, work done in the first week of January can sometimes end up being paid two months later.

Serious and regular clients tend to accept payment upon receipt of invoice which means within 30 days, real time. I am happy to accept longer periods for regular reliable clients. First time or unregular clients have to pay upon receipt of invoice, so that I am sure of being paid within 30 days or so.

A simple trick on the 30 days after the end of the month thing is to issue your invoices around 20th of the month which means clients receive by the end of the month and you are therefore paid by the end the following month. Thus, in my example, for work done in January, payment is received in February.

Clients, or would-be clients who do not accept my terms of payment or who are notoriously bad at respecting payment deadliens do not become or remain clients for long!

Forgot to say : "on time" for me means within the time limit agreed or within the 30 days as above.

Most of them pay according to the terms with few exceptions over the years. Never had an issue with non-payment.

I don't set a deadline, I know my clients will pay (never - touch wood - had a non-payer yet), and cash flow is good enough to allow the odd (very) late payer. Doesn't worry me.

I don't keep them if they pay more than a few days (1 week max) later than agreed upon.
While most of my clients pay at 30 days from invoice date or even before, I have one esteemed client who pays at 60 days but with great punctuality.

Nowadays, thankfully, yes, because most of my clients are long-standing and trusted. My mind is also at ease now that I have learned to be patient, and know that some clients can pay promptly at the end of each month, quarter, or project, etc, whereas others have different setups and conditions, so make take more or less time to pay.

As long as they all stump up in the end, I'm a happy bunny

most of them Apr 27, 2012

one of them has to be reminded after about 40 days, so i just send a reminder and get paid within a couple of days. The others all pay within 30 days, and one or two are very slow because it's paid through a university- red tape, paperwork, etc.

Otherwise they won't be my clients again.
Usually I do not accept periods of payment longer than 30 days.

Most of them pay as agreed. In 30 years, I had 2 non-payment issues (in both instances I had to hire a lawyer)...
