Submissions are now open in the latest ProZ.com translation contest (the 30th!). Source texts are available in English and Spanish for this one, and were authored by two members of the ProZ.com community.

I my opinion there should be at most 3 variants for Spanish:
1. Latin American
2. Rioplatense (Argentinian + Uruguayan)
3. Spaniard

I don't think I agree that one could limit Spanish to those three categories on personal experience alone (my difficulties understanding my Cuban, Venezuelan, and Peruvian friends are all different, and ask someone from anywhere outside of BsAs province in Argentina if they speak Rioplatense!), but fortunately I don't decide that sort of thing. Declaring a variant along with your contest entry (which is optional, by the way) does not mean the entry will only be in competition with other entries of the same variant. It can serve as additional information or context for the entry that helps colleagues evaluate it. ▲ Collapse

I know you can't cater to absolutely everyone, but how hard would it be to come up with 200 words of everyday text in a wide range of languages so that the vast majority of members could take part?

Good question. Answer: harder than you might think!
Previous contests with a wider range of source texts (e.g. https://www.proz.com/translation-contests/43 ) were possible thanks to people submitting and reviewing good texts in their native languages.

OK, I've done one for Norwegian.
I'm not sure why there are so many requirements and hurdles. My experience of checking other people's translations is that ANY text will reveal the quality of the translator. Surely some of the everyday crap we all handle at least from time to time is more appropriate than exotic prose?

"Everyday crap" is what I'm looking for when I want to take a break and have a little bit of translation fun, there you go!
Seriously speaking, any text which is interesting or fun and also a bit of a challenge can be considered. Of course, "interesting", "fun", and "challenging" are relative and up to those who participate to decide. Some like the literary side of things, others prefer something more straightforward. Thanks for proposing in Norwegian, that would be fun to add in an upcoming contest. I'd love it if more people proposed more varied types of texts in more languages, since variety is good. Bearing in mind at the same time that it is impossible to please everyone with the source texts, languages, and even subject matters. A bit of an article from the Economist about a tomato-throwing festival in Spain got it's fair share of negative feedback for promoting the needless waste of tomatoes. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Hello there!
Has anyone else noticed that the latest ProZ.com contest is locked? The hybrid phase was supposed to start on the 3rd of January, and it didn't. The finals were supposed to start yesterday, and they didn't. It is impossible to submit any other translations or to vote for the language pairs that gathered the minimum amount of entries.
Do you have any idea what's going on?
