Testo originale - Italiano Nel 1961, alla galleria romana La Tartaruga (dove espone in quell’anno con Enrico Castellani) Piero Manzoni precorre quella che sarà una pratica artistica e critica contemporanea: il coinvolgimento in forma attiva dello spettatore nella definizione e nella realizzazione dell’opera d’arte. Durante la sua performance, l’artista, infatti, firmerà gli spettatori, le Sculture viventi, e rilascerà un certificato d’autenticità. Su ogni documento Manzoni appose un timbro: rosso per l’intera persona; giallo per alcune parti del corpo; verde per alcune attività particolari; porpora se l’autenticità del corpo era stata comprata.
Sempre di quel periodo vi erano altri lavori che, oltre a ridefinire lo statuto (o la certificazione) dell’opera d’arte, si possono riguardare come esempi di camouflage: le basi magiche e la base del mondo. Le prime sono dei piedistalli in cui chiunque può salire, e per tutta la sua permanenza lì sopra, può considerarsi un’opera d’arte. Il secondo trasferisce in maniera definitiva, e non più temporanea, lo statuto di opera al mondo intero.
Il camouflage perde la sua funzione protettiva per divenire chiaramente ( e senza fumo negli occhi) un modello astratto di orientamento, essenzialmente, linguistico.
Traduzione - Inglese In 1961, in the Roman gallery La Tartaruga (where he exhibited with Enrico Castellani that year), Piero Manzoni anticipated that which has become contemporary artistic and critical practice: the spectator’s active involvement in the definition and creation of a work of art. In fact, during his performance, the artist signed spectators – the Living Sculptures – and issued a certificate of authenticity. Manzoni affixed a stamp to each document: red if the whole person was a work of art; yellow if artistic status was limited to certain body parts; green to indicate the subject was a work of art when performing certain activities; and purple if the body’s authenticity had been bought.
Other works by Manzoni from that period not only redefined the statute (or certification) of an artwork but can also be considered as examples of camouflage: the Magic Bases and the Base of the World. The first are pedestals upon which people can climb and be considered a work of art for the duration of their stay. The second transfers the artwork statute to the whole world in a definite, rather than temporary, way. Camouflage loses its protective function and clearly becomes (sans smoke in the eyes) an abstract model that is essentially language-oriented.

La fine della guerra fredda ha messo in luce fatti che l'asprezza dello scontro diplomatico e militare aveva spinto in secondo piano. La contesa nucleare si è rivelata in tutto il suo carattere simbolico. Si è compreso che la continua rincorsa verso il predominio missilistico e nucleare aveva, prima che un significato pratico, una funzione metaforica. Era l'espressione di una capacità egemonica potenziale che tuttavia non poteva essere posta in essere. Un conflitto atomico avrebbe inevitabilmente portato alla catastrofe globale. Mentre gli strateghi discutevano di "first and second strike capability" era invece palese che, dinanzi a un semplice confronto fra i costi e i benefici di uno scontro nucleare, i costi sarebbero stati così alti da non giustificare in alcun caso luso di armamenti tanti distruttivi da mettere in gioco l'esistenza stessa dell'umanità. Ci si può chiedere perché, ciò nonostante, la competizione continuasse così a lungo. Ma la risposta, forse semplicistica e tuttavia pratica, è suggerita da un'altra semplice osservazione: nelle relazioni internazionali l'apparire spesso equivale all'essere. L'apparire capaci di vincere un conflitto impossibile era più importante del combattere tale conflitto, poiché ciò dava credibilità e incuteva sentimenti utili per tenere assieme coalizioni vacillanti.

The end of the Cold War brought to the foreground certain facts that had been overshadowed by the bitter diplomatic and military encounter. The nuclear contest, for example, revealed itself to be entirely symbolic. It was understood that the continual pursuit of missile and nuclear predominance had more of a metaphorical function than a practical meaning. It was the expression of a hegemonic ability that could never actually materialize, since an atomic conflict would have inevitably led to global catastrophe. While strategists discussed first and second strike capabilities, the simple cost-benefit analysis of a nuclear conflict clearly showed that the cost would be too high to justify the use of arms so destructive humanity itself would be at stake. One might ask, then, why the contest lasted as long as it did. The simple and practical answer is that often in international relations, what you see is what you get. Appearing able to win an impossible conflict was more important than actually fighting it, since that lent credibility and aroused the feelings needed to hold vacillating coalitions together.

Testo originale - Italiano A Eminönü ci sono i moli da cui partono frequentemente i traghetti che portano in Asia o quelli che percorrono il Bosforo fin quasi all’imboccatura del Mar Nero. Una volta attraversato il nuovo Ponte di Galata inizia la salita verso Beyoğlu, il cosiddetto quartiere “europeo”, dove si trovano negozi , ristoranti e locali alla moda. La salita è molto ripida ma estremamente suggestiva tra vecchi palazzi ottocenteschi fino ad arrivare alla Torre di Galata (Galata Kulesi) dalla quale si può godere di una vista mozzafiato sullo skyline di Istanbul. Da Galata si prosegue verso Tünel percorrendo la “strada della musica”, dove sono in vendita tutti i tipi di strumenti musicali dal tipico ney alla chitarra elettrica di Hello Kitty! A Tünel si trovano sia la Mevlevi Tekkesi (Monastero Mevlevi) per chi desidera assistere alla cerimonia sufi della sema (ogni ultima domenica del mese), sia la fermata capolinea del vecchio tram (Nostaljik Tramvay) che percorre tutta Istiklal Caddesi fino alla piazza di Taksim. Istiklal Caddesi è la strada principale di Beyoğlu, fiancheggiata da edifici del tardo XIX secolo e dai consolati europei.
Traduzione - Inglese At Eminönü are docks from which ferries travel to Asia or up the Bosphorus toward the mouth of the Black Sea. After crossing the Galata Bridge you can begin the climb toward Beyoğlu, the so-called “European” quarter, where shops, restaurants and fashionable nightspots are located. The slope is very steep but also extremely scenic with all the old nineteenth-century palaces. At the top is the Galata Tower (Galata Kulesi) from which you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the Istanbul skyline. From Galata you can continue towards the bohemian neighbourhood of Tünel by walking along the “street of music”, where they sell all kinds of instruments, everything from the typical ney to the Hello Kitty electric guitar. At Tünel you can find both the Mevlevi Tekkesi (Mevlevi Monastery), if you want to watch the sufi dervishes in a whirling sema ceremony (the last Sunday of the month), and the terminal for the old tram (Nostaljik Tramvay), which travels the length of the Istiklal Caddesi until it reaches Taksim square. The Istiklal Caddesi is the main street of Beyoğlu, flanked by buildings from the late fourteenth century and European consulates.
