Peripheral smear — The most frequent findings on peripheral smear are rouleaux formation (>50 percent), leukopenia (20 percent), and thrombocytopenia (5 percent) [ 8 ]. Rouleaux formation is the phenomenon when red cells take on the appearance of a stack of coins in diluted suspensions of blood and is seen in patients with elevated serum protein levels ( picture 3 ). A leukoerythroblastic reaction is uncommonly seen.
