Dutch disease

dutch disease
The deindustrialization of a nation's economy that occurs when the discovery of a natural resource raises the value of that nation's currency, making manufactured goods less competitive with other nations, increasing imports and decreasing exports. The term originated in Holland after the discovery of North Sea gas.

словарное определение

Dutch disease - a term used by economists for the failure of the country's economy to develop properly as a result of the plundering of its natural resources, a situation typified by the Netherlands following the discovery of massive resources of its natural gas in 1959. The immediate effect of the find was to boost the economy but it was subsequently depressed when capital was diverted away from more productive investments, in particular manufacturing.

Да а вот ещё \"голландская хворь\" оттуда же:-))
Dutch elm disease -the popular name of Ceratocystis ulmi, a disease in which a suffocating fungus grows beneath the bark of elm trees to be spread by beetles. It was first identified in Holland in 1919 and was particularly virulent in Britain in the 70s, so that by early 80s two of the three British elms had perished as a result of the infestation. When the disease killed the elms it produced forests of suckers from the roots, and these may be seen in hedgerows across Britain. The suckers grow to at least 6 m (20 ft), by wihich time they have developed a heavy enough bark to attract the beetles that carry the fungus....

Interesting - that\'s why I posted it :-))
