Spanish term

Estibador

Spanish to English Tech/Engineering Ships, Sailing, Maritime Buques
Hello everyone!

I'm translating an article about Oceanographic vessels, and I have a problem with this term. I'm not looking for the person, but a kind of tool.

The sentence is:

Any help?

Thomas Walker Mar 11, 2016:
More context is always better I'm left wondering what the beginning part of the ST sentence is: WHAT is it that is "... formado por el accionamiento eléctrico,..."? It might help to find a closer English equivalent.

Proposed translations

7 mins

stowage mechanism/device

sounds like it guides whatever is being winched to where it is stowed or estibado.

stowing machine/granty crane

Stowage machine can be any as fork lift truck, the granty crane is for containers boarding

neutral Taña Dalglish : Linguee cannot be relied upon; one translation of estibador is a "stacker"; Have a look at Charles' answer, but this is not correct./I do not understand yr response! In context ... "el carretel, el eje y el estibador". It is not a person.

he is not looking for the person, the stowager or stacker as the two translations are possible

spooling gear (mechanism)

This is how somebody translated it here, in a description of a winch for a Mexican oceanographic vessel supplied by the Spanish company Ibercisa. Its website includes versions in Spanish and English; the texts are not exactly the same but these bits correspond:

These descriptions include "carretel" and "eje", which is why I think they may be relevant. From this bits you've quoted your "estibador" could be part of a winch, I think.

Here's another bilingual text from a different company:

Sorry, I pressed the button accidently. Here's the rest:

Further information

I was preparing an answer but I arrived late!

Winches
Scientific winches are central to the ability of a research vessel to conduct science at sea. They are used to lower and raise instruments, attached by wire, from the ship. Research ships are fitted with both portable winch systems and permanently fitted systems.

I was going to suggest 'winch' but I still haven't discovered which type of winch an estibador is.

neutral Charles Davis : Hi Helena. As you'll see from what I found, the estibador seems to be part of the winch, which Ibercisa call a "maquinilla".

Hi! When I saw your question I stopped researching. I'd discovered the term is the name of a part of a winch and I was comparing/looking at the different parts. I realised too late that my last sentence is wrong.
