English term

smoke on the property

English to French Marketing Marketing Banner
Bonjour,

Je me demande s'il est convenable d'utiliser le terme "propriété" dans cette phrase ou avez-vous d'autres suggestions?

Visitors and staff are not permitted to smoke on the property in accordance with ABC policy and the Smoke Free ABC Act.

Les visiteurs et le personnel ne sont pas autororisés de fumer sur la propriété selon la politique de ABC et la Loi favorisant un ABC sans fumée.

Merci!

Discussion

Peter LEGUIE Dec 27, 2015:
Asker and pairs Then I would like to mention "dans les dépendances (externes) de l'hôpital". I agree with Daryo, except that in my view, not smoking inside the hospital is not just "presumed" but in fact clearly obvious.
Daryo Dec 27, 2015:
"property" simply means "all that belongs to the hospital", i.e. any buildings and anywhere on the grounds that are part of the land owned by the hospital.

In UK there would be a notice prohibiting smoking "anywhere on the grounds of the Hospital" (not smoking INSIDE the hospital is presumed)
TB CommuniCAT (asker) Dec 26, 2015:
I received confirmation from client that "property" is an outdoor patio
Tony M Dec 26, 2015:
@ Asker In that case, I'd say this is a distinctly quirky use of 'property' (unless this is something specific in US-EN that I am simply unaware of).

From this use of 'property', one may surmise that it probably does mean BOTH indoors AND outdoors, in which case I believe the suggestion by Polyglot is the best solution.
Peter LEGUIE Dec 26, 2015:
polyglot45 I heartily agree with you : and you must post your suggestion, but may I suggest using "dépendances" instead of "emprises"?
polyglot45 Dec 26, 2015:
TB CommuniCAT (asker) Dec 26, 2015:
This is for a hospital, ie. non-smoking on the hospital "property"
Thank you everyone!
Peter LEGUIE Dec 26, 2015:
Asker and pairs Could this possibly be "dans les locaux", therefore meaning "on the premises"? which would tie with the rest of the sentence?
Tony M Dec 26, 2015:
@ Asker 'property' seems to me slightly odd in EN; one would more usually find e.g. 'on the premises'. So in order to choose the right translation, it will probbaly help to know what kind of 'property' this is. Note that 'property' > 'propriété' is often soemthing of a faux ami, since 'property' in the general sense of 'a piece of real-estate' is more often 'bien' in FR, whereas a 'propriété' is a very specific kind of property. So we really need to know which type is involved here.

neutral Daryo : un peu vague; est-ce que "chez" inclut le parking et les pelouses?
