Curiously, both 'big breakthrough' and 'hit the big time' seem very different in register from 'consagración definitiva'. Yet to me it's one of those cases where the more formal, Latinate phrase really isn't all that elevated-sounding in Spanish, it's a very commonly used expression in these competitive worlds of the arts, sports, etc.
