What is the French term for the "barrel" in a generator set ?
Example sentence:
"The machine barrel is an example of a bare metal surface to be found in the system".
I found an old KudoZ with a translation for "stator barrel" (given as "virole"), but I doubt that this could be applied here.

I must admit I'm not quite clear exactly what the 'barrel' is, especially as it refers to bare metal — but 'virole' certainly could be correct for it, it is definitely a term used in relation to alternators.
Have you from your own research actually been able to determine just which part the 'barrel' is? The reference to bare metal made me think of 'commutator' (which might I suppose conceivably be described as being a 'barrel'), but I've never personally come across this term in that meaning.

Given the extra context you've given us above, i.e. that it is in fact not to be left as bare metal, I feel more certain than ever that 'virole' is what you need.

| Hello Tony - well, it doesn't have to be in the alternator itself, it could be anywhere in the generator set. Why not "cuve de la machine" (as fuel has to be handled, so a "cuve" wouldn't be out of place ?). Of course, the alternator itself is probably a better candidate as the "cuve" would, in any case, have some sort of corrosion protection due to its exposure to fuel. |

Le texte parle des parties métalliques nues dans un groupe électrogène (Diesel) et précise qu'un traitement de surface doit être réalisé pour éviter la corrosion.
À part ça, je n'ai pas plus d'indications sur la signification possible du mot "barrel".
