Thanks to the context... Hi Klemi,
Despite the question put forward by Nitase, looking at the whole sentence, the phrase to draw out is: "she followed close upon the heels of "(... Gaspard, who had a harassed look about him), which is why I already made mention of the link with "tread upon one's heels". "Upon" does not count as a word on its own here, however the translation can be tweaked to fit in.

Best,
Ledja
Nitase (asker) Nov 15, 2010:
Klemi I think you are both right, I've used both variants
E ndjeku nga pas Me
in fact this is what I didn't understand either but your answers were really helpful

??? Probably, I am wrong and I really will appreciate the time that anybody can take to give me an explanation. Nitase is asking for the meaning of the terms, " follow upon", and not follow close, not for the translation of the phrase or the sentence, and definitely he is not asking for tips in translation. I agree with Ledja's translation of the words "follow close" a hundred per cent, no doubt about it. As always, her valued contribution in this forum is highly appreciated but is Nitase really asking for that phrase or something else?

Selected

ndjek mbi/me

follow close - ndjek nga afër (Agree with Ledja,s translation for the first part)

upon - mbi/me ( upon as a preposition is another word for on)

In your case I would translate upon as "mbi or me"

P.S.It seems that the sentence is taken out of "Captives of the Night' from Loretta Chase. If this is the case and based on the context, I am pretty sure that this is the usage.

ndjek nga pas/nga afër

To tread upon the heels of, to follow close upon. "Dreadful consequences that tread upon the heels of those allowances to sin." --Milton. [1913 Webster] (http://www.dictionary.net/trodden)

I added, that of course, when the time came, I should go with him, or should follow close upon him, as might be safest in Wemmick's judgment. (http://www.dickens-literature.com/Great_Expectations/45.html...

agree Fabiana Papastefani-Pezzoni : Ndjek nga afër. Në përkthime letrare përkthimit të saktë që gjendet nëpër fjalorë gjithnjë i duhet dhënë veshja e shqipërimit, kështu që "ndjek nga afër", "të mos i ndahem", "t'i bëhem hije"... :)
