German term

Dreadful sentence

German to English Bus/Financial Law: Contract(s)
Dem Verkäufer gegen Vertragspartner der übernommenen Verträge etwa zustehende Ansprüche wegen Lieferung fehlerhafter Produkte oder mangelnder Leistungen, soweit diese Produkte oder Leistungen Gegenstand dieses Unternehmenskaufvertrages sind, tritt der Verkäufer bereits hiermit an den Käufer ab.

Any tips on unravelling this monstrosity are appreciated

Discussion

British Diana Nov 8, 2009:
slight slip.. Sorry, I meant
Der Verkäufer (subject) tritt ab (main verb) Ansprüche (direct object) an den Käufer (indirect object).
And a "y" is missinmg later on. My 60's German teacher Miss Jackson would have killed me for such sloppiness !
British Diana Nov 8, 2009:
SPO (Subjekt, Prädikat, Objekt) Agree with all these attempts - it usually boils down to looking for the subject, predicate (main verb) and object in your source sentence. Der Verkäufer (subject) tritt ab (main verb) Ansprüche (direct object) an den Verkäufer (indirect object). Once you have done that, the rest is usually manageable. When Germans learn English, they tend to ignore usual word order, which is why the always have to be reminded of the SPO rule.
BTW When I learnt German in England in the 1960's it was considered almost equivalent to Latin from the point of view of learning how grammar works!

Agree w/Johanna's version; lots of English sentences are best unravelled/translated from the other end.
Susanne Rindlisbacher Nov 8, 2009:
Der Verkäufer gibt auch Verträge mit Vertragspartnern an den Käufer weiter. Wenn diese Vertragspartner ihren Verpflichtungen nicht nachkommen, hat nicht der Käufer Ansprüche gegen die Vertragspartner, sondern der Käufer.
Johanna Timm, PhD Nov 8, 2009:
Entwirrungsversuch Der Verkäufer tritt bereits hiermit alle Ansprüche an den Käufer ab, die ihm in Bezug auf Verträge zustehen, die er vom Vertragspartner űbernommen hat und die sich auf die Lieferung fehlerhafter Produkte oder mangelnder Leistungen beziehen, soweit diese Produkte oder Leistungen Gegenstand dieses Unternehmenskaufvertrages bilden
BirgitBerlin Nov 8, 2009:
maybe this helps it's very late, and I cannot offer a translation, but try to read the sentence as follows, and it might become clearer:
Dem Verkäufer möglicherweise zustehende Ansprüche tritt der Verkäufer bereits hiermit an den Käufer ab.
This is your main sentence. Now just add all the other bits.

Here goes

Claims resulting from the delivery of defective products or inadequate performance, in as much as these products and services are the subject of this sales contract, which the Seller is entitled to make against parties to whom this contract is transferred are herewith assigned to the Purchaser.

There are quite a few Google hits for defective products and inadequate product performance.

My stab at it

The Seller hereby transfers to the Buyer any claims of the Seller against other parties to the assumed agreements arising from defective products or deficient performance, to the extent that said products or performance are the subject matter of the present (company) purchase agreement.
