Slovak term

objekt

Slovak to English Tech/Engineering Architecture
I would like to know your opinions on this word:
"objekt", e.g. as in "evakuačný plán daného objektu" ... Objekt as a place...
This is taken from an emergency plan of an airport and I've used 'building', property, headquarters,... interchangeably...
Thank you all in advance...

Discussion

Gerry Vickers Oct 21, 2009:
Subject/object It's one of those words - easy in Czech, less easy in English... similarly subjekt, realizace, řešení, v rámci, obec, etc. ad nauseam...<br>I have just now used 'premises', but there is no single 'right' answer!

building

I think you are pretty safe with building as a general term. Instinct tells me to be a bit more careful with property because it implies private ownership. Headquarters again might be too specific - depends what building you are talking about. I think maybe just stick to building unless you are absolutely sure about the specific function of the building in question.

In view of what Peter rightly says about "objekt" including open areas, I think Martin's suggestion of "site" is probably a better solution

Or maybe "premises" as Slavomir suggests
Peer comment(s):

agree Martin Janda : As long this can be applied to a house with adjacent grounds or a set of buildings...? All these might be 'objekt' too.

Thanks Martin

Thanks Igor
neutral Peter Hladky : Sorry Charles, but evacuation of the object - e.g. airport or railroad station or nuclear power station or some institution includes also open areas not only buildings or premises.

Good point Peter. In that case "building and surrounding area" or something like that. I still just have never heard "object" ever used in English in the sense you are suggesting

Napr. rozne prostriedky radiotechnickeho zabezpecenia, ktore su dokonca MOBILNE a maju svoj evaluacny plan.

agree Gerry Vickers : depends on how big the airport is...

object

I think you can use term "object".
Peer comment(s):

neutral Charles Stanford : Sorry Peter but I don't think we would use "object" in this context in English. If you were being asked to evacuate an airport and you heard "please leave the object" then you would get a lot of very confused passengers. Not used in English in this sense!
33 mins
Thanks Charles. But I think that the term "object" is wider term than premises or building because evacuation plan includes also open areas.
disagree Sarka Rubkova : I am sure that you cannot use it in archutecture or civil engineering

Ďakujem.
neutral Slavomir BELIS : I have just consulted this with some natives and they say no to this term in this sense.

Ďakujem.
disagree Marcela Hashim : "Object" does not fit within this context. Generally, the term is unlikely to be used to refer to buildings, etc.

Ďakujem.

building, property, site...

je fakt nutné postupovat podle kontextu. většinou se tím myslí budova, ale může to být i včetně pozemků. Zkusil bych třeba i site, je to snad trochu gumovější.
Peer comment(s):

agree Charles Stanford : Site is a good idea too

Thanks Charlie!
agree Michal Zugec : ak nie object, tak potom site

vďaka, Michal :-)
agree Peter Hladky : Site bude asi vhodnejší termín ako object.

agree Sarka Rubkova : Ano, protože to znamená všechno a odpovídá to slovu "areál"
