Italian term

alveo dei controlli ufficiali

Italian to English Other Idioms / Maxims / Sayings
I don't know if this is a saying, as the only meaning I can find for alveo is river bed which doesn't make any sense... unless it's a typo? I wondered if they meant alveare (like a hive of bureaucracy??) any ideas?? The text is about regularising illegal pig farms and the full sentence is: "L’ipotesi attuale è quella di trasformare questa tipologia di allevamento in qualcosa di più vantaggioso, anche economicamente, se riportato nell’alveo dei controlli ufficiali"

brought under the aegis of official controls

Aegis is good because its just about as fancy and obscure in normal usage as alveo in Italian.

Replace control with check, inspection, etc. as appropriate to wider context.

Italian term (edited): riportato nell'alveo dei controlli ufficiali

brought under the control of the official channels

I think they may mean 'alveo' as in 'channels'. They appear to be saying that this process would be a good thing, so an ironic subtext about the agonizing complexities of Italian bureaucracy may be slightly out of place here. HTH :).
Peer comment(s):

agree Mr Murray (X) : This is the idea. Usually alveo is 'ambito' in this idiom - control, confines, 'ambient', jurisdiction, limits of - lierally 'between the banks of' here, so 'channels' is a nice parallelism
