1. Investigation
According to the Master, wooden beams (approx. 4,000 x 100 x 100 mm) had been used as dunnage (placed on the pontoon in a transverse manner, viz. across the longitudinal frames) underneath the bundles of steel billets (loaded on the pontoon longitudinally). Four lines of each three beams had supported the 500 m.t. of steel billets. The exact position of these wooden beams remained unknown to us.

2. Repairs / Costs
In order to carry out repairs, the top plate of pontoon no. 5 needs to be partly cropped and renewed over approx. 14,000 x 800 mm. Welding can be done with aid of backing strips.

Costs for such repairs, without additional strengthening of the pontoons, are roughly estimated at approx. € 10,000.00.

3. Cause of damage
Based on the foregoing, we conclude that the construction of the pontoons causes a narrow weak area in the deck plating of the pontoons where the longitudinal frames are interrupted. This requires specific attention to the dunnage and the manner of stowage of the bundles of steel, which is, however, not indicated on the pontoons.
The weakness in the construction of the pontoon principally caused the damage to the pontoon. Had the longitudinal frames not been interrupted, the damage as such would not have occurred.
From the fact that the other pontoons were not damaged, we can only conclude that the dunnage had not been positioned in the narrow weak area in the centre of these undamaged pontoons.

1.Onderzoek
