The spatial consideration of reconstructing this image began as a hole-punch collage, in which I copied the image several times, obliterated it with a scissors and hole-punch and then attempted to reconstruct it. The image itself took on the visual irony of the gunshot wound, while also playing with an abstraction of space and time, both inside the narrative, and outside it, including the abstract time and space engaged in my own translation of the set. After doing this, I decided that I wanted to create a hybrid interaction that further disoriented the viewer by juxtaposing paintings of mirrors, real mirrors, empty mirror frames, and re-sampled footage of the destruction of the mirror maze from the original film scene. The spatial design I created for the installation began as an architectural model, using a series of 17 black frames, some empty, some encased with mirror on both sides, and some with paintings on one side and mirror on the back. My installation is about the “mirroring” or reflection between these mediated images, and how the viewer is placed in a disorienting position outside the film. Yet while ***experiencing*** the project, s/he is physically lead into the film’s space and narrative, bringing together actual and virtual fragmented representations of architectural space. In contrast to Renaissance perspective, which creates the illusion of 3-dimensional space by flattening it mathematically into 2-dimensions, I wanted to take the flat 2-dimensional photograph and stretch it back into 3-dimensions, as a related artistic process linked to the perceptual, and spatial ambiguity of the mirror maze set.
