NEW YORK — The case of the minor 18th-century portraitist who became the first major English landscape painter and revolutionized the approach of European masters to nature is one of those mysteries at the heart of art history that may never be explained.
A small, tight-knit exhibition at Richard L. Feigen & Co. turns the spotlight on the story of Richard Wilson for the first time in the United States. “Richard Wilson and the British Arcadia” runs through June 25.
As in unresolved police investigations, we miss elements that may have been crucial in the story of the evolution of a Briton born sometime around 1713 in the Welsh town of Penegoes. Little is known about the youth of the artist, whose birthdate is undiscovered.
The son of a clergyman, to whom he was indebted for a thorough classical education, young Richard left Wales for London in 1729 to train under Thomas Wright, a mildly talented portraitist, who enjoyed his moment of notoriety. Following in the footsteps of this competent practitioner, Wilson eventually secured the patronage of the great and the good. By the time he executed the group portrait “Francis Ayscough with the Prince of Wales and Edward Augustus, Duke of York and Albany,” probably about 1749, the artist seemed set on a financially rewarding if artistically unimpressive course.
In what circumstances Wilson took up landscape painting eludes us. Perhaps the sight of Dutch landscapes by great masters like Jan Both and Aelbert Cuyp in the collections of his patrons goaded the portraitist into trying his hand at a genre until then ignored by English artists. Gaspard Dughet and Claude Lorrain, whose work was avidly collected by English connoisseurs, may have also stimulated him.
The tag line sums up my mission. My word is true in two ways. Firstly, I translate, transcribe or interpret the exact meaning of what is being said in the source document or by the person. Secondly, the client receives exactly what has been promised to him/her. I try to be as transparent as possible so that the client knows what he/she is will be getting for the value of his/her money.
