What is this term in English, is there an equivalent? It cannot be a VAT number as it also applies to self-employed people who do not need a VAT number as they earn less than the limit required for a VAT number. And it isn't a simple tax reference number. TIA

EEC VAT
From what I understand there is no EEC economic policy as yet and it falls to each nation so the VAT numbers have at their beginnings a 2 letter indicator of the country IT for italy, and so on, this seems to be what is meant. You might wait for a specialist to confirm or give a better answer, as I am not 100% sure. I have translated it this way, myself though.

I think it is actually a tax number for EU... you need this even if you dont pay taxes...
