German term

entlang X prioritärer Ziele

German to English Bus/Financial General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
Context:
"Wir werden in den kommenden Jahren unsere Aktivitäten zur Mitgestaltung des XYZ entlang vier prioritärer Ziele verfolgen, die ich kurz auflisten möchte:"

I'm rather puzzled by this. How does this sound?

In the years ahead, we will pursue our activities aimed at playing a part in creating the XYZ focussing on four main priorities, which I would like to list briefly:

Discussion

David Williams (asker) Feb 17, 2009:
Quite so Thanks for confirming, LittleBalu! By the way Ellen, X (or x) is commonly used to represent a number.
Ulrike Kraemer Feb 17, 2009:
@David: Anne's is the best and most natural sounding suggestion (IMVHO). Ellen's suggestions don't sound natural even to my non-native ears (no offense meant, Ellen).
Ellen Kraus Feb 17, 2009:
dont understand what X in this context stands for. I would leave it as <by focussing on the following four priorities which I should like to list briefly as under: "
David Williams (asker) Feb 17, 2009:
How about "pursuing X main priorities"?
Ellen Kraus Feb 16, 2009:
instead of <basing> I would suggest <focussing our endeavours on ..... "
Ulrike Kraemer Feb 16, 2009:
@Anne:
Warum stellst du deinen "rephrasing"-Vorschlag nicht als Antwort ein?
Anne Schulz Feb 16, 2009:
Sorry, just couldn't resist.
But seriously, this speaker did not get his grammar straight, and unless you want to reproduce that style, you could rephrase this as "direct our activities towards" or similar.
Anne Schulz Feb 16, 2009:
Only if you (gramatically) think that "der Weg ist das Ziel", I would say :-)
David Williams (asker) Feb 16, 2009:
Is it even correct German to say "entlang Ziele"?

(rephrase)

OK, also hier als Antwort:
Da weder "Aktivitäten verfolgen" noch "entlang...Ziele" grammatisch so richtig passt, sollte man hier vielleicht besser ziemlich frei übersetzen, z.B. "we shall direct our activities... towards the following X priority goals" (sofern das, was folgt, dann auch tatsächlich "Ziele" sind ;-).
Peer comment(s):

agree Ulrike Kraemer : ja, gefällt mir deutlich besser als alle anderen bisher vorgeschlagenen Lösungen

Danke, LittleBalu! Allerdings muss ich gestehen, dass ich keine gute Idee habe, wie man die "Mitgestaltung des XYZ" geschickt in diese Konstruktion einbauen könnte ;-)

playing an active part in shaping XXX alongside (based on or) alongside four priorities

I would say completing your suggestion
Note from asker:
I've now written: "In the years ahead, we will play an active part in shaping the XYZ, based on six main priorities, ..." Maybe it would be better to say "basing our activities/endeavours on" instead of "based on"?
Peer comment(s):

disagree Cilian O'Tuama : the words are English though

disagree Ulrike Kraemer : Sorry, aber Cilian hat Recht. "alongside" passt hier wirklich nicht.
