French term

personnalite "marquee"

French to English Bus/Financial
This comes from a list of ideal qualities for a change management leader:
- il ne se met pas forcement en avant
- il sait utiliser l'humour pour aider les autres
- c'est un personnalite plutot "marquee" (their quotation marks)

Does this mean a person who stands out, a forceful person or something else? Thanks, Karen

"marked" personality (and keep the quotes as in the source text)

This is a shamelessly literal translation. Translators typically abhor "literal" translations, and for very good reasons. There are times, however, when the most honest approach is an almost "word-for-word" translation. I submit that this is one such instance.

"Marked personality" does sound odd, doesn't it? Well, the writers of the source material were not oblivious to that. They put the word in quotes, practically saying, "this is not the most felicitous expression, but you know what we mean." That is why I recommend keeping the quotes as in the source material.

I would faithfully preserve that subtext.

If you are still uncomfortable with “marked,” I would suggest (in the order of preference):

1. adding the adverb “distinctly” to clarify the intended meaning;

2. rephrasing, e.g., “a personality that stands out;”

3. using terms like “distinguished,” “remarkable,” or “outstanding,” which, in my judgment, fail to hit the “marquee,” if you pardon a silly pun.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks to you and everyone else for a very enlightening discussion. I have a better grasp of the term now. Like Corinne, I saw the contradiction between "il ne se met pas forcement en avance," so I was hesitant about "a personality that stands out." However, on the next page, under "detection du leader de changement," it says: "de nombreueses occasions permettent de mettre en evidence des personnes qui semblent "se detacher du lot." I realized there is a distinction between naturally standing out and purposely promoting yourself. I have to admit I'm uncomfortable with "'marked'" personality and I'm almost certain the editor would change it. But your discussion was very helpful. Thank you very much, Karen"

strong personality

Operations Manager required for a new start up call center to be responsible for all managerial aspects e.g. IT, Training, Recruitment, Client Service AND Operations. Must have a strong personality with the ability to motivate while fitting in and displaying a strong presence within the call center. Must have previous experience in setting up a call center.

Here is a quote from a job description in English.

I think that "strong personality" would cover several basis, a persona that has inner strength, that is, and a person who stands out.

Cheers

"determined" or else see further personality

"marquée" deserves o remain in brackets in French for I believe they did not want to mean a strong or forceful personnality as such, or else they would not also have said "il ne se met pas forcément en avant". Without the"", it would have had to be translated by a strong personnality, with those, I would tend to think that this company is looking forsomeone whose personality has been influenced by such a previous situation or by someone whose personnality is already well-known to its future staff.
But then that is without any knowledge of the full text or context, so you will have to choose between those on the context;
Hope it will help you anyway to sort this out.
Do not hesite contacting me if you require any further explanation on this.
Good luck

"marquee" (in quotes)

I've just remebered seeing this in The New Yorker" (February 5, 2001) : "It began in 1998 as something of a fringe event where Gonzales was a marquee attraction, and where tapes of his presentations sold as if they were bootlegs by Bob Dylan." Maybe you could work on that...
