Being a proZ.com newbie my wife was delighted to be contacted yesterday for a translation job which on reflection smelled fishy to begin with, has taken several hours of internet research to verify and now seems very, very likely to be a scam. In the absence of being able to post the emails (to protect the "client's" identity) here are some pointers just in case you receive a similar request.

There are plenty of spelling and grammatical mistakes in the client's emails.
The IP address of the original couple of emails received was from the Djibouti Embassy in Washington DC.
Subsequent ones came from Sunnyvale California.
The job was to translate from English to French 2 sizeable documents about the re-unificaction of Germany to be distributed to delegates as handouts at a conference to be held in Germany in the first week of September.
One of the documents turned out to be from MSN Encarta.
Paypal wasn't an option, only a banker's check to be paid by the client's sponsor.
The contact address was for a house in Sleepy Hollow, New York currently listed on the net as for rent.
The phone number given though was for Djibouti and on dialling it (with the US dialling code in front) there was an automated message giving no information but inviting the caller to leave a message.
The client repeated a request this afternoon for personal details as time was short but did not respond to a request for a phone number to discuss the contract (as of one hour ago).
