a first purchase already Feb 7, 2023

After countless years of service, my loyal iiyama secondary screen decided it was time to bow out, so I bought a new one.
Having all I need for my purposes already, I don't plan to replace anything this year, or any year for that matter, unless something fails beyond repair or becomes too obsolete to maintain my living standard.

Buying for the sake of marginal benefits is outdated, I hear.

Philippe

Hardware Feb 7, 2023

Inflation and recession are coming, so the best thing is to SPEND NOW. So yes, I'm buying hardware.

Hardware Feb 7, 2023

I actually ordered a new custom-made PC a few days ago. Come to think of it, my selecting "Hardware" here was actually not entirely true, since I am going to need a new MS Office package, since my current package can only be used with my current PC and Windows install. Other than that, I am not planning on purchasing any new work-related software, only a few games slated for release this year.

New HDD, new RAM, new headphones Feb 7, 2023

In the first week of January 2023, my computer started rebooting itself several times a day. I initially thought that reinstalling Windows should do the trick, and since my HDD^H^H^HM.2 SSD was old, I upgraded to a newer, larger one. Alas, the problems continued, and then I checked my RAM. Turns out one of the RAM modules had failed. So, new RAM. (The old RAM was under a lifetime warranty, but the store required me to return both sticks, and one of them still worked, so I opted for just keeping it and consider the the EUR 25 as a business expense.) Oh, and two weeks ago my headphones stopped working, so I bought the identical model again.Collapse

Not sure Feb 7, 2023

Yesterday, I renewed the licence for one of my software tools. Does that kind of thing count?

Not sure Feb 7, 2023

Too early to tell! After many good and loyal services, my PC was replaced last year, so hopefully I'm ok on that front, but my printer is starting to make some grinding noises. We will see…

I had to buy a new laptop and desktop last year and have just taken out subscription for Microsoft Office so that will have to be it for a while

New laptop Feb 7, 2023

I think I'm going to have to buy a new laptop sometime this year, as this one is getting too old and a bit slow. But we'll see. Only if I have to, really.

Too late. I already have. New M1 Mac Mini. Noticeably faster but otherwise, everything else is the same.

I can't find a decent dinner set anywhere.

Which is a shame given how much money I've saved by not investing annually in new hardware and software that do nothing that older versions can't already do.

I answered NO... Feb 7, 2023

...and then I received an offer to get Trados for a discounted price of £330. Now I don't know what to do (I turned down at least 10 clients in the last couple of months as I didn't have this).
Any advice?
