Source text - English The trees were tall, but I was taller, standing above them on a steep mountain slope in northern California. Moments before, I’d removed my hiking boots and the left one had fallen into those trees, first catapulting into the air when my enormous backpack toppled onto it, then skittering across the gravelly trail and fl ying over the edge. It bounced off of a rocky outcropping several feet beneath me before disappearing into the forest canopy below, impossible to retrieve. I let out a stunned gasp, though I’d been in the wilderness thirty- eight days and by then I’d come to know that anything could happen and that everything would. But that doesn’t mean I wasn’t shocked when it did.
My boot was gone. Actually gone.
I clutched its mate to my chest like a baby, though of course it was
futile. What is one boot without the other boot? It is nothing. It is useless, an orphan forevermore, and I could take no mercy on it. It was a big lug of a thing, of genuine heft, a brown leather Raichle boot with a red lace and silver metal fasts. I lifted it high and threw it with all my might and watched it fall into the lush trees and out of my life.
Translation - Catalan Els arbres eren alts, però jo ho era més des d’aquell punt alçat de muntanya al nord de Califòrnia. M’acabava de treure les botes i l’esquerra m’havia caigut entre aquells arbres. Primer havia sortit catapultada, empesa per un cop de l’enorme motxilla, i després havia baixat rodolant pel sender pedregós fins a caure al buit. Havia rebotat contra un sortint de pedra uns quants metres més avall i finalment havia desaparegut entre la frondositat del bosc de sota meu, per la qual cosa era impossible de recuperar. Vaig deixar anar un crit ofegat per la sorpresa, tot i que després de trenta-vuit dies de voltar per la natura ja havia assumit que podia passar qualsevol cosa i que, de fet, estava passant de tot. Això no va impedir que, quan va passar, m’horroritzés.
La bota havia desaparegut. Literalment.
Em vaig enganxar la seva parella al pit com si fos una criatura, però evidentment va ser inútil. Què és una bota sense l’altra? Res. No serveix per res, queda orfe per sempre més i no em podia permetre compadir-me’n. Era un pes mort, una bota Raichle certament feixuga, de pell marró amb el cordó vermell i amb les anelles metàl•liques platejades. La vaig aixecar enlaire, la vaig llançar amb totes les meves forces i vaig observar com queia entre la vegetació exuberant i desapareixia de la meva vida.
