A theme of the age, at least in the developed world, is that people crave silence and can find none. The roar of traffic, the ceaseless beep of phones, digital announcements in buses and trains, TV sets blaring even in empty offices, are an endless battery and distraction. The human race is exhausting itself with noise and longs for its opposite—whether in the wilds, on the wide ocean or in some retreat dedicated to stillness and concentration. Alain Corbin, a history professor, writes from his refuge in the Sorbonne, and Erling Kagge, a Norwegian explorer, from his memories of the wastes of Antarctica, where both have tried to escape.
And yet, as Mr Corbin points out in "A History of Silence", there is probably no more noise than there used to be. Before pneumatic tyres, city streets were full of the deafening clang of metal-rimmed wheels and horseshoes on stone. Before voluntary isolation on mobile phones, buses and trains rang with conversation. Newspaper-sellers did not leave their wares in a mute pile, but advertised them at top volume, as did vendors of cherries, violets and fresh mackerel. The theatre and the opera were a chaos of huzzahs and barracking. Even in the countryside, peasants sang as they drudged. They don’t sing now.
What has changed is not so much the level of noise, which previous centuries also complained about, but the level of distraction, which occupies the space that silence might invade. There looms another paradox, because when it does invade—in the depths of a pine forest, in the naked desert, in a suddenly vacated room—it often proves unnerving rather than welcome. Dread creeps in; the ear instinctively fastens on anything, whether fire-hiss or bird call or susurrus of leaves, that will save it from this unknown emptiness. People want silence, but not that much.

এক ফোঁটা নিটোল নিস্তব্ধ মুহূর্ত, অন্তত উন্নত দুনিয়ায় মানুষের প্রাণ তার জন্য হাঁপিয়ে উঠছে অথচ তা পাচ্ছে কোথায়। ট্রাফিকের গর্জন, বেজে চলা ফোনের বিরামহীন তীক্ষ্ণ আওয়াজ, ট্রেনে ও বাসে নিরন্তর যান্ত্রিক ঘোষণাবর্ষণ, খাঁ খাঁ অফিসেও বজ্র নির্ঘোষে চলতে থাকা টিভির শব্দ সবই প্রতিমুহূর্তে দুরমুশ করে মানুষের মনকে উদ্ভ্রান্ত করে ফেলছে। ইদানীংকালের মানুষ শব্দের এই অতিব্যবহারে নিজেকে নিঃশেষ করে দিতে দিতে খুঁজে বেড়াচ্ছে শব্দহীনতার এক বিপরীত আকাশ –কোন নির্জন অরণ্যপ্রান্তরে বা দিগন্তলীন সাগরের নীলে অথবা কোন নিভৃত অবকাশের আশ্রয়ে যেখানে গভীর নীরবতায় তার মন হারাবে নিবিড় প্রশান্তির অতলে। ইতিহাসের অধ্যাপক অ্যালেন করবিন্ লেখালিখি করেন তার সর্বোনের নিভৃত আশ্রয়স্থল থেকে আর নরওয়ের অভিযাত্রী এরলিং কাগে লেখেন তাঁর অ্যান্টার্টিকার ফেলে আসা স্মৃতি হাতড়ে, দুজনেই যেখানে উধাও হবার আপ্রাণ চেষ্টা করেছেন।
কিন্তু অদ্ভূৎভাবে তাঁর “ নৈঃশব্দের (এক) ইতিহাস” বইটিতে শ্রী করবিন্ লিখছেন অতীতের চেয়ে খুব যে বেশী কিছু আওয়াজ এখন হচ্ছে তা নয়। হাওয়া ভরা টায়ার এর যুগের আগে ধাতব চাকার কানফাটানো আওয়াজ আর পাথুরে রাস্তায় ঘোড়ার খুরের শব্দে শহরের রাস্তা গমগম করত। মোবাইল ফোনের একাকী আশ্রয়ে স্বেচ্ছা নির্বাসনের আগে, বাস-ট্রামগুলো মুখর থাকত মানুষের কথোপকথনে্র শব্দে। খবরের কাগজ বিক্রেতারা মুখ বুজে তাদের কাগজের তাড়া নিয়ে বসে থাকত না বরং নিজেদের বিক্রি বাড়ানোর জন্য গলা ফাটিয়ে চেঁচাত, যেমন চেঁচাত চেরী, ভায়োলেট আর তাজা ম্যাকারেল বিক্রেতারা। থিয়েটার ও অপেরা গুলো প্রানপণ হাততালি আর গলা ফাটিয়ে দুয়ো্ দেওয়ার প্রবল আওয়াজে যেন এক হট্টমেলার দেশে পরিণত হত। এমনকি গ্রামের মাঠেও চাষীরা লাঙল দিতে দিতে গান ধরত। এখন আর তারা গায় না।
আসলে বোধহয়, আওয়াজের তীব্রতা, যা নিয়ে গত শতকের মানুষেরও অভিযোগের অন্ত ছিলনা, তা যতটা না বেড়েছে তার চেয়ে ঢের বেশী বেড়েছে অবাঞ্ছিত শব্দের উপস্থিতি, যা হয়ত ভরিয়ে তুলছে নীরবতার অনিবার্য মুহূর্তগুলো, আর তার চেয়েও বড় ধাঁধা হল যখন সেই মুহূর্ত হঠাৎ এসে হাজির হচ্ছে, কোন আদিম পাইন বনের গভীরে, উন্মুক্ত মরু প্রান্তরে বা অকস্মাৎ জনশূণ্য হয়ে পড়া কোন ঘরে – তখন তাকে স্বাগত জানানোর বদলে এক অজানা আশঙ্কায় আমাদের অন্তরাত্মা কেঁপে উঠছে। ভয় আসছে গুঁড়ি মেরে, সামান্যতম আওয়াজের জন্য নিজেদের অজান্তেই কান খাড়া হয়ে উঠছে, তা সে আগুনের হিস্-হিস্, পাখির ডাক অথবা পাতার সামান্য খস-খসানি,যা এই অপরিচিত শূণ্যতার হাত থেকে বাঁচাতে পারে।

Hello! I am Suhita, a 50-year-old mother of two young sons (aged 16 and 10) and a freelance translation service provider in English<>Bengali language pair. I live in Kolkata, one of the big metropolia in the eastern part of India in the state of West Bengal. I am a native Bengali speaker and proud to behold the rich and exotic culture which this language has imbibed for over a thousand of year and the language in which the enigmatic Rabindranath Tagore had written throughout his life.
Previously I have worked as a development professional with the Non-government organizations and worked mainly among the underprivileged community & children of Kolkata with an objective to ensure their rights. I have decided to quit that job and moved into the world of professional translation as a home-based freelance service provider.
Language is something that I have loved since childhood and that passion became stronger as I grew older. Initially, it was my mother tongue Bengali into which I read voraciously and slowly I got into reading English literary works as well. My academic degree in Sociology together with my experience of more than 20 years in the field of social development has provided me with the necessary insights about the specificity of a localized culture and the colloquialism associated with it.
