I was wondering what the two terms mean in the text below (they seem to be connected). They occur in the 2023 Proz contest, which ended already so now this question can be asked.
I do not speak Spanish but I can read it. I understand the text more or less, except for this one term.
May I ask to tell me what they exactly mean here (please reply in English)?
Here's the text piece:
"Las lenguas en las que hemos sucedido, aquellas en las que el tiempo se nos brindó con sus goces y sus penas, y en las que expresarnos fue para nosotros vitalmente decisivo, son las que, cuando hay vocación literaria, mejor dotados nos encuentran para encarar su traducción. Yo ocurrí en portugués, si así se me acepta que lo diga, y ello durante años para mí fundamentales..."

pasado/inicié
The word "Ocurrido" is the past form of the verb "ocurrir",.Therefore, the word "brindó" (verbo brindar=entregó ofreció, dedicó) also has to be in the past.
"ocurrido" = pasado, iniciado, hemos tenido lugar, existido, acontecido, desarrollado.
The word "Yo ocurrí en portugués", can be translates as "Yo inicié con portugués".
Finally, the meanings depends on the context.

nacido/llegué al mundo
Hi, a famous spanish writer (Clarín) said «Me nacieron en España», meaning it was accidental to be born in Spain.
In your text, the author means he was unintentionally born in a Portuguese-speaking country.

seguido/empecé a conocer
Pienso que quiere decir que nos hemos conocido en la misma lengua y que nos podemos seguir en la misma lengua que compartimos. Me vale seguir leyendo las noticias en inglés y español sobre lo que sucede en el mundo.
Example sentence:
"El derecho a expresar y difundir, buscar, recibir y compartir información e ideas es esencial para desarrollarnos como personas, ayudar a nuestras comunidades, acceder a la justicia y disfrutar de todos y cada uno de los derechos fundamentales."

The original can be found following the link shared by Toni Castano.
"No conviene, a mi parecer, traducir sino de los idiomas que habitaron nuestras vidas. Quiero decir que no basta con saberlos. Lo esencial es haber sido o ser en ellos. Las lenguas en las que hemos sucedido, aquellas en las que el tiempo se nos brindó con sus goces y sus penas, y en las que expresarnos fue para nosotros vitalmente decisivo, son las que, cuando hay vocación literaria, mejor dotados nos encuentran para encarar su traducción".
To me it sounded like "getting into/to occur" but it seems the terms have been used in a quite literal way by the author.
If it's talking about the languages in the past, can be something like "the languages that we used to speak".
About "ocurrí, I need to read what comes after that sentence. It mentions Portuguese, which I speak fluently too. The word ocurri, I cam see that it is "invented by the author" as he says "if I am allowed to say it that way". But I cannot get the whole intention he has with it

"Es geschah am hellichten Tag", en español "El cebo" (Der Köder), si dijera lo mismo que en alemán sería "Sucedió en pleno día" u "Ocurrió en pleno día"
May I still ask how the verbs are normally used? What's their "natural" use?
Excelentes aportaciones de Toni y Pablo.
Saludos.
... Ich "geschehe auf Portugiesisch"...
... die Sprachen, "auf denen wir geschehen sind"...
Si son correctas estas formulaciones, seguramente sean tan "befremdlich" para un nativo de alemán como lo es tu texto para un nativo de español... Buen domingo

"La emoción de traducir", del libro "Una biografía de la lluvia", de Santiago Kovadloff.
El uso de "suceder" y "ocurrir" en este contexto solo se entiende como idiolecto.
In EN in about "to blunder/get roped into something".
Puedes leerlo sustituyendo ambos verbos por -vivir- y el significado sería parecido.
Le lingue nelle quali "siamo accaduti"... Io "sono accaduto" in portoghese...
