The def. from the DRAE is:Tercera parte del adarme y octava del castellano, la cual se divide en 12 granos y equivale a 596 mg aproximadamente. 2. m. Moneda de plata que se usaba en algunas partes de América.
From the context I have, I'm not sure if the def. 1 or def. 2 fits, and either way, I don't know how to translate it. Talking about a 16th Mexican codex:
En la parte superior están 11 círculos en color negro con otros ocho más pequeños adentro. Se aprecian como dádivas: pescados, leña, zacate, guajolotes y recipientes, que tienen una pequeña asa del lado derecho. En cada recuadro pusieron algunas glosas entre las que destacan las abreviaturas de pesos y tomines para indicar el monto del pago.
