Por extensão, tombamento (que era a simples inclusão de um registro no livro) passou a ser entendido como o Estado colocar sob a sua guarda, "para os conservar e proteger (bens móveis e imóveis cuja conservação e proteção sejam do interesse público, por seu valor histórico, ou artístico, ou arqueológico, ou etnográfico, ou paisagístico ou bibliográfico)" (Aurélio).
