causation Rossella's term is definitely what I would go for, but I like John's approach of "simplification for clarification". The phrase is typical of legal proceedings, where proving causation is often central to a claim, which is why I went for Rossella's. If these are not legal proceedings as I have assumed, then maybe John's is better because it puts the concept into clear English and allows the sentence to flow better.

Cheers Simon. I'll stick with this form because I think it's a technical lawsuit term but not used in its normal technical sense here.
