German term

Ton- und Bildtonträgerfirma

German to English Art/Literary Media / Multimedia
Eine Ton- und Bildtonträgerfirma schließt mit einem Ton- und Bildtonträger-Künstler eine Vereinbarung.

This is from a contract. I'm familiar with "sound carrier" and "image carrier," but "sound and image carrier company" doesn't sound so good to me and doesn't receive a veritable plethora of Google hits either.

Thanks.

Whether it's a recording studio should be clear from the context; if not, I suggest you ask your client. :-)
Non-ProZ.com Jun 7, 2005:
So something like:
recording studio?
audio-visual recording studio?
swisstell Jun 7, 2005:
Tontraeger is more than just Schallplatte, it is also a cassette or a CD nowadays i.e. any audio recording device.
silfilla Jun 7, 2005:
Tontraeger = Schallplatte = audio media :-)
Bildtontraeger = video/DVD = audio-visual media :-)
Non-ProZ.com Jun 7, 2005:
Johanna I was trying to search for "...Firma," but couldn't find it. I still wonder the best way to translate it incorporating "Firma"

note I guess the problem I always have with this is whether, for all practical purposes:

Tontraeger = Schallplatte
Bildtontraeger = video/DVD

Proposed translations

German term (edited): Ton- und Bildtontrgerfirma
Selected

company that produces audio and audio-visual media

Ton = audio

Bildton = audio-visual

Träger = media

This should work both in the US and the UK :-)

If you want, you could also shorten it:

company that produces audio/visual media

or even: audio/visual media company

The slash would indicate that the company does both

If the company produces equipment as well:

*audio/visual media and equipment company*

or turn it around (along the lines of the above options)

Remember the artist is probably a \'recording artist\' or even:

Steve O\'Neill recording and video artist

I\'m wondering if you\'re possibly getting too caught up with having the word \'Firma\' (which can to all intents and purposes be called an \'enterprise\') as an \'obviously translated\' element in your translation.
(Basically, that\'s why the name of that company appealed to me straightaway - it sounds natural.)

There is of course also always the simple:

audio and visual production company
