German term or phrase: Ausbuchtung (Kontext)
IT, IDE controllers

I am not sure how to translate it in this context. There must a special IT term.

a bulge / bulging

Explanation:
seems to me more a question of physical caracter than of genuine IT.
The plug-in is possible only in one way/direction because of that bulge (which probably has been intentionally made to prevent any other way to connect)

tongue

Explanation:

Two caveats, however: The IDE ribbon cable inside the box lacked a tongue to ensure proper alignment.
