Pressurised aircraft have fuselages that are sealed as much as possible to keep the air in. This is achieved in several ways, e.g.:
- wet assembly (a joining compound) of the aluminium alloy skin with subsequent internal sealing applied;
- sealed pressure bulkheads fore and aft;
- flying control systems sealed where they pass through pressurised bulkheads/pressure hull;
- all other services (cables, ducting etc.) sealed as they pass through pressured bulkheads/pressure hull;
- windows and windscreens sealed around their edges;
- pilot's d.v. (direct vision) window fitted with a rubber seal;
- rubber seals on passenger and emergency exit doors;
- rubber seals on cargo doors;
- drain holes in the bottom of the fuselage fitted with automatic sealing valves;
- systems that lead from/to the presser area to outside are sealed. E.g., (1) Toilet systems--though they are sealed to keep their contents in rather than to help seal the pressure hull. (2) Pitot static systems--again sealed for the purpose of ensuring that air data is not corrupted going to the instruments, >Air Data Units
