Significantly for the novel, Bakhtin developed his ideas through a study of the European novel, which, he argues, is made rich by weaving together different languages and dialects, resisting 'official' and 'standard' language. Bakhtin argues that the language of the novel is, or should be, essentially dialogic (multi-voiced), compared with poetry, which tends towards the monologic (unity of voice).
