Estos chupones, como su nombre lo indica, contienen mucha agua y poca sacarosa, y tienen un mayor contenido de azúcares reductores.
Los chupones afectan al crecimiento de los tallos adyacentes. Ellos hospedan plagas y cuando son cosechados y enviados al ingenio para triturarlos, producen un jugo de mala calidad, lo que afecta la recuperación del azúcar. Los chupones pueden ser utilizados como alimento para el ganado.
