The engine has a cylinder (10) in which a piston (14) slides between a top dead center and a bottom dead center under an action of a connecting rod (20). A crankshaft (38) controls displacement of the piston under an effect of a cam follower (26) to vary a swept volume and a compression ratio of the engine. The cam follower is pivotingly mounted around an articulation axle (46) and displaced in translation along a direction. The cam follower is connected to the connecting rod and to the crankshaft respectively by two ends (24, 28) of the follower. An independent claim is also included for a method for varying a swept volume and a compression ratio.

Doordat de nokkenas tegenwoordig meestal boven in de cilinderkop is geplaatst (bovenliggende nokkenas), kan de klep directer worden aangedreven. Dit kan indirect via een tuimelaar of meer direct, als de nokkenas direct boven de klep is geplaatst. Dit gebeurt altijd via een nokvolger om de horizontale component van de draaiende nokbeweging op te nemen. Hoe directer de klep kan worden aangedreven, hoe meer vermogen er kan worden behaald.
Als de nokkenas dicht bij de krukas is geplaatst, moet de beweging via nokvolgers en een stoterstang worden overgebracht op de kleppen (onder andere Harley-Davidson en Moto Guzzi).
