The tower that holds the drill pipes vertically (or slanted for horizontal drilling). Naturally this tower has hoists at the top to control the vertical position of the drill pipes.
In offshore jackup drilling units, the derrick tower can be translated on an overhanging platform which is position over the drilling conductors of a fixed platform. This is the modern way to perform drilling instead of "skidding" the drill rig over to the Main deck of the fixed platform.
